Borrowed Heat part 6

Six weeks felt longer than they should have.

I kept the door open during every remaining office hour. I called on him in class only when the work demanded it. I graded his final portfolio with the same ruthless precision I gave everyone else and refused to let my eyes linger when he packed his things on the last day of the semester. He never pushed past the boundary I had drawn that rainy night in my apartment. He simply looked at me the way he always had, and left the room each time without a word that could be misread.

Graduation was held under a white tent on the main lawn. The air smelled of cut grass and warm champagne. I stood near the edge of the faculty section in a dark dress and watched him cross the stage, receive his diploma, and shake the dean’s hand with the same quiet composure he had shown in every seminar. When his name was called I felt the old familiar pull low in my stomach and forced myself to clap like every other professor.

The after-party spilled across the department courtyard as evening settled. String lights hung between the trees. Someone had set out folding tables with wine and cheese. Students in dresses and suits drifted between clusters of faculty, laughing too loudly, already half in love with the idea of freedom.

I was mid-conversation with a colleague when I felt him approach.

Ellis stopped a careful distance away, diploma tube under one arm, tie loosened. The six weeks had not dulled anything. If anything the enforced distance had sharpened it.

“Professor Voss,” he said, voice polite enough for anyone listening.

“Hart.” I kept my tone even. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” His eyes held mine a second longer than necessary. “There’s something I need to say, privately, if you have a minute.”

I excused myself and followed him around the side of the building, away from the lights and the noise, into the narrow service alley that ran behind the English department. The second we were out of sight he turned, and the careful distance collapsed.

He kissed me like the six weeks had been a single held breath.

The want that had sat unanswered since the night I sent him away surged back full force. He tasted like champagne and scent I still remembered on my sheets. One of his hands braced beside my head; the other slid to my waist and pulled me flush against him. I could feel how hard he was already. The discovery sent a fresh rush of heat between my legs.

We stayed like that, hungry kisses broken only for air, his thigh pressing between mine until I was rolling against it without shame. My dress rode up under his hand. I bit his lower lip the way I used to and felt the low sound he made vibrate against my mouth.

A burst of laughter from the courtyard made us freeze.

We broke apart, breathing hard. His forehead rested against mine for a second. My lipstick was almost certainly on his mouth. My pulse was loud enough that I was certain anyone walking past the alley mouth would hear it.

“I’m not your student anymore,” he said quietly.

I looked at him in the half-dark, the same steady eyes, the same refusal to scramble, and felt the last of the old performance fall away.

We fixed our clothes in silence. I wiped the trace of my lipstick from his mouth with my thumb. He straightened the shoulder of my dress. Then we walked back into the courtyard separately, the way we had arrived, and rejoined the party as if nothing had happened.

An hour later, when most of the students had drifted toward the bars downtown and only a smaller group of faculty and graduates remained, I found him again near the wine table. This time I didn’t keep my distance.

I stepped close enough that our arms brushed and said, clearly enough for the two colleagues standing nearby to hear, “Ellis is coming to dinner with me tomorrow. We’ve waited long enough.”

The words landed in the mild evening air without drama. One of the professors raised an eyebrow, the other simply smiled into her glass. Ellis looked at me, surprise flickering for only a second before that quiet certainty returned.

No one made a scene. The boundary that had ruled every locked door and stolen hour was gone, and we had chosen in the open to step across what remained of it.

Later, after the last of the lights were taken down and the courtyard emptied, he walked me to my car. This time when he kissed me it was slower, the kind of kiss that belonged to people who no longer had to watch the door.

“Six weeks,” I murmured against his mouth.

“Worth it,” he said.

I drove home with the windows down and the night air cool against my still-flushed skin, the decision already settling into something solid and irreversible. For the first time since the afternoon he stayed after class and refused to scramble, I stopped calculating the cost and simply let myself want him in the light.

Two days later the mark on my cheek had faded, but the memory of Jude Harlan’s eyes had not.I told myself it was nothing. A stupid accident and an ancient history that should have stayed buried. I went to work, answered emails and smiled through another client call that went nowhere. At night I lay awake replaying the exact second the iced tea left my hand and the way his voice had said my name.On Thursday evening my phone lit up with a calendar reminder I had almost forgotten: the soft launch for the new co-working space downtown. Free drinks, networking, the usual forced cheer. I almost stayed home. Then I remembered Tessa would almost certainly be there, still laughing about the coffee-bar video, and spite won.The space was all glass and concrete, already crowded when I arrived. String lights hung from the high ceiling. People clustered around low tables with wine glasses and forced laughter. I took a glass of sparkling water I did not want and found a corner near the windows wh

The day had already decided to hate me.I stepped off the curb into a puddle deep enough to soak my left shoe through to the sock. Rain streaked the windows of every café I passed. My phone battery sat at four percent. The client meeting that was supposed to save my week had ended with a polite smile and a firm “we’ll be going in another direction.” By the time I pushed into the crowded coffee bar on Mercer Street, my mood was a black, humming thing under my skin.I ordered the largest black coffee they had and claimed the last free stool at the high counter near the window. Steam rose from the cup. I wrapped both hands around it and closed my eyes for three full seconds, trying to borrow calm from the heat.Someone bumped my shoulder hard enough to jostle the cup. Hot liquid sloshed over the rim and burned the side of my hand.“Oops,” a voice sang behind me. Familiar in the worst way. “Didn’t see you there, princess.”I turned to see three women from the marketing team at my old firm

The chair’s office smelled like old paper and the cheap coffee that always sat too long on the burner. I sat across from her with my spine straight and my hands folded in my lap while the memory of Ellis still buried inside me the night before sat like a second pulse under my skin.“There’s been a concern raised,” she said, glancing at a note on her desk. “About the amount of time one of your advanced students has been spending in your office after hours. Ellis Hart.”My face stayed neutral. Inside, everything went cold and sharp.“He’s revising a long piece,” I answered. “The work requires extended discussion. I’ve kept the door open whenever possible.”She studied me for a moment longer than was comfortable. “See that it stays that way. Perception matters, Mara. You’re new to the faculty, the last thing any of us needs is a complication.”I left with the warning sitting heavy in my chest. By the time I reached my office the sharp edges of fear had already started cutting into the wa

He stood without warning, still buried inside me, and lifted. The sudden display of strength pulled a startled sound from my throat. My legs locked around his waist on instinct. He carried me two steps from the desk as if I weighed nothing and braced my back against the nearest wall. One arm stayed solid under my thighs; the other braced beside my head. Then he fucked up into me in short, powerful strokes that stole the air from both of us.Every thrust dragged a soft, helpless noise out of me. The wet, rhythmic slap of our bodies was impossible to hide. I tried to muffle the sounds against his shoulder and failed. My fingers dug into the muscle of his back hard enough to leave marks. He kept the pace, then shifted the angle so the head of his cock dragged across the exact spot that made my vision blur.“Look at me,” he said, voice rough. He saw every crack in the performance I had tried to maintain in class, every place the text message and the locked door and the way I had touched m

I spent the next class pretending he did not exist.I called on everyone else and redirected every comment that drifted toward him. When he raised his hand I looked past it and asked the student two seats over instead. The performance was deliberate, the cleanest way I knew to end whatever had started against my desk and then against my living-room couch. Rules existed for a reason. I had already broken enough of them.Ellis never looked away.He sat in his usual place, posture relaxed, pen moving across the page as if the discussion still interested him. Every time my gaze accidentally slid in his direction I found his eyes already on me, the same quiet intensity that had watched me come apart twice. The simple fact of his attention made the space between my legs throb once, hard, before I forced myself to look at the whiteboard again. My phone vibrated against the desk near the end of the hour.I ignored it until the others began packing up. Only when the room emptied did I unlock t
