Borrowed Heat part 5

The chair’s office smelled like old paper and the cheap coffee that always sat too long on the burner. I sat across from her with my spine straight and my hands folded in my lap while the memory of Ellis still buried inside me the night before sat like a second pulse under my skin.

“There’s been a concern raised,” she said, glancing at a note on her desk. “About the amount of time one of your advanced students has been spending in your office after hours. Ellis Hart.”

My face stayed neutral. Inside, everything went cold and sharp.

“He’s revising a long piece,” I answered. “The work requires extended discussion. I’ve kept the door open whenever possible.”

She studied me for a moment longer than was comfortable. “See that it stays that way. Perception matters, Mara. You’re new to the faculty, the last thing any of us needs is a complication.”

I left with the warning sitting heavy in my chest. By the time I reached my office the sharp edges of fear had already started cutting into the want I still carried. I texted him before I could talk myself out of it.

*We need to talk. My place tonight.*

He arrived at eight with rain still in his hair. I didn’t let him step fully inside before I spoke.

“This ends now. The chair pulled me in and someone noticed. I will not risk both our careers because I can’t keep my hands off you.”

Ellis closed the door quietly behind him anyway and set his bag down. He didn’t argue right away. He just looked at me the way he always did, steady, patient, like he was already reading the fear underneath the command.

“You’re scared,” he said.

“I’m realistic.”

He stepped closer. I held my ground. When his hand rose to my face I caught his wrist before his fingers could touch my cheek.

“Don’t.”

He stopped, but he didn’t pull away. His pulse beat against my fingers, “Mara, Look at me.”

I did. That was my first mistake, the second was not stepping back when he leaned in and kissed me. For three full seconds I let it happen, my mouth opened under his. My free hand fisted in the front of his shirt. Heat flooded low and immediate, the familiar slick gather of want between my legs that had never once listened to reason.

Then I turned my face away and pushed against his chest.

“No.”

The word came out rough. He stayed close enough that I could still feel the warmth of him, close enough that the refusal cost something visible.

He tried again, mouth at the corner of my jaw, one hand sliding to my waist, the solid press of his body offering everything we had already taken in locked offices and against walls. My eyes closed, for a moment I almost let the soft part of me win. I could feel how easy it would be to drag him to the bedroom, to lock the door one more time, to pretend the chair’s warning had never happened.

I stepped back hard enough that his hands fell away.

“I said no.” My voice was steadier this time, even though my pulse was not. “I want you, I won’t pretend I don’t. But I am not going to destroy both of us for it. Semester ends in six weeks. Until then you are my student and nothing else. After that… I don’t know. But right now this is finished.”

Ellis studied me for a moment. The usual quiet certainty was still there

“You’re sure.”

“Yes.”

He nodded once with no further attempt to close the distance. He simply picked up his bag, walked to the door, and paused with his hand on the knob.

“I’m not going to make this easy for you in class,” he said. “I’m still going to push back when the work deserves it. And I’m still going to look at you like I know exactly how you sound when you come.”

“I can live with that,” I said.

He opened the door. Rain misted in from the hallway. For a second I thought he might turn back, might try one last time. He only glanced over his shoulder, and left me standing alone in the quiet apartment with the taste of him still on my mouth and the decision already cooling into something permanent.

I locked the door behind him. Then I sat on the edge of the couch, pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes, and let the want sit there unanswered until it slowly began to ease.

Six weeks. I could survive six weeks.

I had to.

  • Forbidden Touch : Stories of Desires   Revenge plot part 2

Two days later the mark on my cheek had faded, but the memory of Jude Harlan’s eyes had not.I told myself it was nothing. A stupid accident and an ancient history that should have stayed buried. I went to work, answered emails and smiled through another client call that went nowhere. At night I lay awake replaying the exact second the iced tea left my hand and the way his voice had said my name.On Thursday evening my phone lit up with a calendar reminder I had almost forgotten: the soft launch for the new co-working space downtown. Free drinks, networking, the usual forced cheer. I almost stayed home. Then I remembered Tessa would almost certainly be there, still laughing about the coffee-bar video, and spite won.The space was all glass and concrete, already crowded when I arrived. String lights hung from the high ceiling. People clustered around low tables with wine glasses and forced laughter. I took a glass of sparkling water I did not want and found a corner near the windows wh

The day had already decided to hate me.I stepped off the curb into a puddle deep enough to soak my left shoe through to the sock. Rain streaked the windows of every café I passed. My phone battery sat at four percent. The client meeting that was supposed to save my week had ended with a polite smile and a firm “we’ll be going in another direction.” By the time I pushed into the crowded coffee bar on Mercer Street, my mood was a black, humming thing under my skin.I ordered the largest black coffee they had and claimed the last free stool at the high counter near the window. Steam rose from the cup. I wrapped both hands around it and closed my eyes for three full seconds, trying to borrow calm from the heat.Someone bumped my shoulder hard enough to jostle the cup. Hot liquid sloshed over the rim and burned the side of my hand.“Oops,” a voice sang behind me. Familiar in the worst way. “Didn’t see you there, princess.”I turned to see three women from the marketing team at my old firm

Six weeks felt longer than they should have.I kept the door open during every remaining office hour. I called on him in class only when the work demanded it. I graded his final portfolio with the same ruthless precision I gave everyone else and refused to let my eyes linger when he packed his things on the last day of the semester. He never pushed past the boundary I had drawn that rainy night in my apartment. He simply looked at me the way he always had, and left the room each time without a word that could be misread.Graduation was held under a white tent on the main lawn. The air smelled of cut grass and warm champagne. I stood near the edge of the faculty section in a dark dress and watched him cross the stage, receive his diploma, and shake the dean’s hand with the same quiet composure he had shown in every seminar. When his name was called I felt the old familiar pull low in my stomach and forced myself to clap like every other professor. The after-party spilled across the dep

He stood without warning, still buried inside me, and lifted. The sudden display of strength pulled a startled sound from my throat. My legs locked around his waist on instinct. He carried me two steps from the desk as if I weighed nothing and braced my back against the nearest wall. One arm stayed solid under my thighs; the other braced beside my head. Then he fucked up into me in short, powerful strokes that stole the air from both of us.Every thrust dragged a soft, helpless noise out of me. The wet, rhythmic slap of our bodies was impossible to hide. I tried to muffle the sounds against his shoulder and failed. My fingers dug into the muscle of his back hard enough to leave marks. He kept the pace, then shifted the angle so the head of his cock dragged across the exact spot that made my vision blur.“Look at me,” he said, voice rough. He saw every crack in the performance I had tried to maintain in class, every place the text message and the locked door and the way I had touched m

I spent the next class pretending he did not exist.I called on everyone else and redirected every comment that drifted toward him. When he raised his hand I looked past it and asked the student two seats over instead. The performance was deliberate, the cleanest way I knew to end whatever had started against my desk and then against my living-room couch. Rules existed for a reason. I had already broken enough of them.Ellis never looked away.He sat in his usual place, posture relaxed, pen moving across the page as if the discussion still interested him. Every time my gaze accidentally slid in his direction I found his eyes already on me, the same quiet intensity that had watched me come apart twice. The simple fact of his attention made the space between my legs throb once, hard, before I forced myself to look at the whiteboard again. My phone vibrated against the desk near the end of the hour.I ignored it until the others began packing up. Only when the room emptied did I unlock t
