The conference room smelled of expensive coffee and polished wood. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the water. Tessa sat at the far end of the table with two men in suits. She was mid-sentence when the door opened.

Her smile faltered the moment she saw us.

“This is a private meeting,” she said

“It was,” Jude answered. He closed the door behind us with deliberate quiet. “Now it’s not.”

I took the seat across from her without waiting for an invitation.

Tessa’s eyes flicked between us. “Whatever this is, it can wait.”

“It can’t.” I interrupted her. “You used a photograph of me to destroy the work I needed. You coordinated the cancellations and you tried to drag his business into it as collateral. We’re here to return the favor with better evidence.”

Jude set the phone on the table and played the recording. The voice of one of the partners filled the room, screenshots followed, message after message and dates that lined up perfectly with every loss I had suffered.

The two men shifted in their seats. One of them looked at Tessa with caution.

She laughed, “This is desperate, and frankly, a little sad. The two of you, childhood enemies, suddenly playing house and coming after me with gossip?”

“Not gossip,” Jude said. “Evidence and the partners can decide for themselves whether they want their names attached to it.”

One of the men cleared his throat. “We’ll need to review this internally.”

“Of course,” I said. “While you do, you might also review whether the person who manufactured the instability is the safer long-term association.”

Tessa stood up. For a moment I thought she might say something cruel enough to reopen every old wound. Instead she simply looked at me.

“Enjoy the moral high ground while it lasts,” she said. Then she left, the door clicking shut behind her with more force than necessary.

The two partners murmured polite exits and followed. Within minutes the room was empty except for Jude and me and the residual scent of coffee.

I exhaled. The adrenaline began to drain, leaving a strange, clean exhaustion in its place.

Jude turned from the window. “It’s not finished. She’ll try something else, but the immediate damage is contained. Your contracts can be approached again and mine is no longer useful as leverage.”

I nodded. The victory felt quieter than I had expected.

We stood on opposite sides of the long table. The same charged air that had lived between us since the coffee bar was still there, only more complicated, denser with everything we had done and still not said.

“I meant what I told you last night,” I said. “About why I did it when we were kids. It doesn’t erase anything. I know that.”

Jude walked around the table until he stood in front of me. Close enough that I could see the faint shadow of sleeplessness under his eyes, the small mark on his lower lip where I had bitten him.

“I never really hated you, it was quite the opposite, but what you did left a mark on me.”

The honesty of it landed harder than any apology.

I reached up and touched the edge of his jaw with my fingertips. He leaned into the contact.

“Temporary alliance?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “Not temporary.”

He kissed me then, slowly this time, without the whiskey or the rage or the need to punish anything. Just the quiet fact of two people who had finally stopped running from the history that bound them.

When we separated, the conference room felt different. The war with Tessa would continue in smaller, meaner ways, but the private war between us had shifted into something neither of us was interested in winning anymore.

Outside, the water kept moving under ordinary daylight.

Inside, we gathered the phone and the evidence and walked out together, the marks on my wrists fading, the future no longer shaped only by what we had done to each other as children.

For the first time in a very long time, it felt possible to choose what came next.

The calls started coming again on a Tuesday. Not many at first, one former client who had “reconsidered,” then a second, then a short email from a design firm that had gone silent after the photo scandal. By Thursday the inbox had a different weight to it. Opportunities that had vanished were quietly reappearing, some with careful language about “previous misunderstandings.” I answered every one. I took the meetings and wore the clothes that made me feel like the version of myself that existed before the iced tea and the public humiliation.Recovery was not dramatic. It was incremental, almost boring in its steadiness. I slept better. I cooked actual meals. The constant low-grade panic that had lived under my ribs since the soft launch began to loosen its grip.Jude and I had not spoken in nearly two weeks. The silence was deliberate on my side at first, space to decide whether the alliance and everything that had followed it in his bed had been a necessary wartime decision or somethi

The hotel suite was high enough that the city looked like a circuit board through the dark glass. She had chosen the room herself, anonymous, expensive, the kind of place where no one asked questions if the Do Not Disturb sign stayed on the handle until morning. She was already on her knees when he finished locking the door. The leash hung heavy from the collar around her neck. The leather was soft, expensive, the kind that didn’t leave marks unless you wanted it to. She kept her eyes up as she took him into her mouth, deliberate and aggressive, tongue working the underside with focused pressure so he would feel every ridge and pulse. She hollowed her cheeks and took him deeper, the head of his cock pressing the soft palate at the back of her throat. He made a low, broken sound and his hips jerked forward, forcing more of himself past her lips. She didn’t pull away, she let him thrust, the force of it making her eyes water, saliva running down her chin and onto her bare breasts. When

Morning light found us still tangled in the wreckage we had made.I woke up first. The sheets were damp in places, and sticky in others. My wrists carried faint red marks from whatever he had used to bind them. Between my legs I felt the deep, pleasant ache of having been used thoroughly and without gentleness. The taste of whiskey and him still lingered at the back of my tongue.Jude slept on his stomach, one arm flung across my waist as if even unconscious he refused to let the distance return. In sleep the hard lines of his face softened. He looked closer to the boy I used to torment than the man who had fucked the apology out of me the night before.I watched him breathe and felt the complicated weight of what we had done settle over me like another blanket. When he woke, he didn’t startle. His eyes opened and found mine immediately.“Regretting it?” he asked, voice rough with sleep.“No, You?”He shook his head. “No.”We stayed like that for a while, not touching beyond the arm s

I was two-thirds of the way through a bottle of something amber and expensive when the door opened again.Jude stopped in the doorway. His eyes went from my face to the bottle in my hand and back.“I thought I told you to stop.”I lifted the bottle in a mock toast. “Welcome home.”He crossed the room in three strides, took the bottle from my fingers with firm pressure, and set it out of reach.“That’s enough.”He crouched in front of me so we were eye level. The concern in his face was worse than anger would have been.I looked at him, and the words I had never said finally pushed free.“I’m sorry.” The confession came out raw. “For all of it. The books in the mud, the notes, the way I made sure everyone laughed. I just… I wanted to feel like I belonged somewhere. Hurting you was the only thing that ever made the other kids stand next to me. That doesn’t make it better. I know that, but it’s the only reason I have.”Silence stretched.“I won’t forgive you.”He said.I reached out, took

The story spread like smoke under a closed door.By the third day every professional contact I had ever made seemed to know the photo. Clients cancelled, two freelance contracts dissolved with polite, final emails. A recruiter who had been warm last week suddenly had no openings. Tessa’s little network had done its work thoroughly. My name was now attached to “unstable,” “unprofessional,” and a looping image of me.I stopped answering the phone. That night I found myself on a bar stool in a place that smelled of old wood and cheaper whiskey than I usually drank. The lights were low. The music was something slow and forgettable. I ordered the first double without tasting it. The second went down easier, by the third the edges of the room had softened and the weight on my chest felt almost manageable. No one looked at me twice. The bartender kept the glasses coming and strangers talked around me like I was furniture. I was fine with that, being invisible felt safer than being seen.I di
