Chapter 6: The Beginning

“She starts tomorrow, right? Be good to her”

“Sure.” Nodded Marc.

After the wedding, Tobias put Marc in charge of SolTech, the leading company that develops new-age solar materials. Lisa joined as head of R&D earlier that week. Tobias offered her the job personally as soon as she submitted her doctoral thesis.

He wanted the best working for him. Lisa graduated from Harward and earned her PhD from Princeton. She had published several papers in the field of thin film solar cell development and Tobias wanted to incorporate her technology into his cars. Besides SolTech, Tobias owned a chain of restaurants, a car company, two major hotels in the country and a was a pharmaceutical giant.

It seemed like he owned a share in industries. His name was known to everyone in the business. Since Marc had an engineering degree from MIT, he’d be suited to head SolTech.

“I am appointing you the director of SolTech,” he announced to Marc, soon after the wedding.

“Sure” was all Marc managed. He was beginning to feel like a loyal dog. Of course, he wanted to work but he didn’t want to be offered a company simply because he was son-in-law to the Giant.

But the world didn’t know Tobias was sinister. Alphas were notorious for misusing their powers and strength in ways humans couldn’t even fathom. Marc had gotten a taste of that overwhelming power and didn’t want to upset Tobias, not even in the slightest.

And Now Lisa starting work at the same company would make matters worse. His vision got blurry when he saw her and his judgement was cloudy. It would be more difficult to control himself if she worked that closely. And if Tobias senses a hint of disloyalty, that... He couldn’t afford that. He had to control himself. He had to shut his heart to Lisa.

It is not like he had ever been inappropriate to her. Not as if he had accidentally had something flirtatious. She was clueless about his feelings towards her. If he could keep that up then everything would be fine. Could he though?

He thought about her pressing on him on the morning of his wedding. The floor felt cold on his back and his chest warm with Lisa’s weight on it. He could smell her arousal. That was the first time, Lisa had responded to his presence in that manner.

He thought he was mistaken, but she had inched her face closer as he lingered his finger on his cheek. It must have happened all too quickly for her. But for him, it felt like the moment had lasted forever. Did she feel what he felt, that time seemed to have slowed down in that instant.
