Chapter 2

Author: Moonbeam
"Bullshit!" Spittle flew from Mr. Lockwood's mouth, nearly hitting my face.

"What scope of practice? Someone's dying! If she dies on campus, we're both finished! You're a doctor! You have to help!"

Mr. Lockwood's eyes went wide with panic. Without another word, he grabbed my shoulders and shoved me hard toward the bathroom stall with all his strength.

"Get in there! If she dies, we're all going down with her!"

I stumbled and crashed into the stall door. It rattled loudly against the frame.

The surrounding students stared at me like I was already guilty. Their silent judgment pressed against my back until I could barely breathe.

The horrors of my past life overlapped with the coercion of this one. In the end, I was still being forced back into the center of this nightmare, all in the name of saving a life.

I stepped into the stall. The metallic stench of blood hit me immediately.

Serena Anderson sat slumped against the cold tile, deathly pale. Beneath her spread a pool of blood that made my stomach turn.

The umbilical cord wrapped around the baby's purple neck. The tiny life barely had any breath left.

My heart clenched. In that instant, everything from my past life came rushing back. Her tearful accusations when she woke, Lynn's condemnation, the online mob, and the cold edge of a blade.

Every image crashed over me, nearly stopping me in my tracks. I couldn't let this happen again. But this was a dying mother and a suffocating child.

Then Serena seemed to regain a sliver of consciousness. "Save my baby. Please…"

I drew a sharp breath and dropped into a crouch, quickly assessing her condition. She was hemorrhaging badly, and the baby was in distress. She needed immediate intervention, but…

I pulled out my phone. "Listen, I'm the campus doctor. I need you to tell me who the father of your baby is."

Serena's lips moved, her voice barely a whisper. "It's Leo…"

"Dr. Kirk! You monster! Are you even human?"

Lynn burst into the stall like she'd lost her mind, swinging wildly to knock the phone from my hand. "Serena's dying and you're taking photos of her? You're disgusting!"

Her shrill voice filled the cramped space and carried to every eavesdropper outside.

I avoided her attack, resisting the urge to throw her out bodily.

Then Serena screamed again, her body convulsing violently. The situation spiraled toward critical. A thought flashed through my mind.

Rather than being forced to help and reliving my past nightmare, maybe…

I let Mr. Lockwood's next shove throw me off balance, stumbling toward the water pipe. "Stop pushing me!"

Then, in the split second before I hit the ground, I angled my left forearm—ulnar side first—directly at the pipe's metal joint and slammed into it with my full body weight.

Mr. Lockwood froze. "Dr. Kirk! What happened?"

Cold sweat instantly beaded on my forehead, my face draining of color. "My arm's broken! I can't even hold gauze steady now. How am I supposed to deliver a baby? You want me to use this useless arm and kill them both?"

I forced the words through gritted teeth, pain shooting up my arm. My gaze swept sharply across everyone present.

"Mr. Lockwood, and you, Lynn! You're the ones so desperate to save her, right? Then you'll do it. Follow my instructions exactly!"

"Me? I can't!" Mr. Lockwood's face went white. He backed away.

"You have to!" I snapped. "You're the closest ones here! Are you going to stand there and watch her die right in front of you? Listen to me and do exactly what I say! Now!"

I guided them through clearing the airway, carefully unwinding the cord from the baby's neck, then coached Serena when to push.

Every step was precarious. One wrong move, and they would both die.

"You don't get to have it both ways. I'm not some object you can summon when it's convenient and toss aside when it's not."Andrea seemed to sense what was coming. "Murphy, don't do this! I know I hurt you. We can talk this through.""There's nothing to talk about." My voice was firm. "You'll be getting divorce papers soon. Andrea, we're done."I hung up and blocked her number immediately.Sunlight warmed my shoulders, but I felt nothing. Living this life over, I'd seen too many people for who they really were.Lynn's vicious scheming, Serena's cowardice, the university's self-serving politics, and Andrea's abandonment when I needed her most. Divorce was just the first step in leaving the past behind.I started putting the pieces of my life back together. My wrist needed time to heal, but that didn't stop me from planning my next move. The lawsuit against the university and Mr. Lockwood moved forward quickly. I hired a lawyer, filed the complaint, and went after the university f

Mr. Lockwood's face fell. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.At the hospital's orthopedic department, they reset my wrist and fitted it with a proper splint. The moment they finished, two officers working the case came to find me."Dr. Kirk, the paperwork's done. We need you to come back to the station with us to finalize your statement.""Of course. I'm happy to cooperate." I nodded. The interrogation room at the police station felt nothing like the hospital. After finishing my statement, I stood by the one-way glass and watched Lynn and Serena being questioned in the room next door.In just a few hours, the two had completely turned on each other. Now they were tearing each other apart.Serena went first. She'd cried herself hoarse, desperately trying to pin everything on Lynn."Officer, I made a terrible mistake! Lynn said if I didn't do what she told me, she'd tell my parents I was pregnant. I was terrified! She fed me all those lies! I didn't know anything!

"Lynn said if I did what she told me, she'd give me money and help me leave…" Serena finished. The room erupted in shock. Every camera and pair of eyes locked onto Lynn. Her face had gone white as a sheet, her body shaking uncontrollably. The officer's voice cut through the chaos. "Lynn Farris! Is what Ms. Anderson said true?"I stepped in front of Lynn and looked her dead in the eyes. Two lifetimes of rage and confusion erupted from deep inside me."Why? Lynn, I've always tried to do right by every student as the campus doctor! Why would you go to such lengths to destroy me? What did I ever do to you?"Under the weight of countless stares, Lynn finally cracked. She jerked her head up, eyes wild as they locked onto mine."Why? You're asking me why? Dr. Kirk, you hypocrite! You never cared about me at all! I liked you! From the moment I met you during the freshman health screening, I've always liked you!"I faked being sick just to see you at the clinic. I wrote you anonymous lo

"My grounds are substantial!" I said with absolute certainty. "There were major flaws in the sample collection process."I raised my injured left hand for emphasis, speaking quickly but clearly. "First, when they collected the baby's sample, the scene was chaotic. Multiple people were watching, some even taking photos and videos. Could the sample have been contaminated or switched? Who can guarantee it wasn't?"Second, and most importantly, during my blood draw, Lynn made aggressive physical contact with me!" I pointed sharply at her. "When she burst in and accused me of taking photos, we ended up in a physical struggle! It's entirely possible she planted Serena's biological material on me during that altercation, which led to the false results!"Lynn's face went white. Panic flashed through her eyes."You're making things up! I barely touched you! How could that contaminate anything? You're just twisting the facts!""Barely touched me?" I laughed coldly. "Officer, you can ask a

"The test results confirm a biological paternal relationship between Dr. Murphy Kirk and the infant." The officer's voice cut through the room, cold and clear as a final verdict. For a moment, the room went silent. Then chaos erupted."It really is him!""Oh my God! There's proof!""Scum! Absolute scum!"Cameras were practically shoved in my face, and flashes went off like strobe lights. Lynn's expression twisted into something close to ecstasy. She jumped to her feet."There's your proof! Dr. Kirk, what do you have to say now? You assaulted a student! You're worse than an animal!"She whirled toward the police and cameras, tears streaming down her face in a performance worthy of an award. "Officers! Members of the press! You all saw it! This monster used his position as campus doctor to prey on my roommate!"Serena just turned 18! Her whole life is ruined because of this devil! He needs to rot in prison!"On the hospital bed, Serena buried her face deep in the blanket, her

"Listen, I'm the campus doctor. I need you to tell me who the father of your baby is.""It's Leo..."The moment the recording ended, Lynn screamed. "That's fake! The recording is fake!"She jabbed a finger at me. "He forged it! Or he forced her to say that while she was in agony! Think about it! She was dying and in extreme pain. You really think she knew what she was saying? He planned this! He had it all set up to clear his name! He's despicable!"Her words set the room on fire."She's right! When you're giving birth, you're not thinking straight!""This doctor is so manipulative! Why was he recording her? That's suspicious right there!""He definitely planned this whole thing. Set it up just for this moment! Scumbag!""Lynn's right! We can't trust anything he says!"The crowd, briefly subdued by the recording, surged back to life under Lynn's influence. They glared at me with renewed disgust. The officer looked at me. "Dr. Kirk, we'll need to verify this recording. Until t
