LOGINChapter Two
————- The day of the wedding ————- I can’t breathe. My hands clawed at my chest as I wheezed and gasped on the floor. I’m going to die. I just know it. I can’t live without Prayan. “Selena?! Help me with the princess!” I could hear Mami’s shouts but it felt like I was underwater and connected to a naked source of current. Pain sliced through my center as my mate bond with Prayan began to cleave. “STOP!” Mami begged. “Stop this, please! You’ll kill her!” She was right. I gasped in pain as the room spun about me, going in and out of vision. “Get her off the floor this instant! This is disgraceful!” Baba snapped. I felt hands grab onto me and try to pull me off the floor but it was too late. My chest felt hollow; my mate bond was gone and now my life would follow. Where was Prayan? Would he watch me die? “I’m sorry, Lena,” I heard him whisper in my head for the last time as my wolf howled in pain. Everything went black. ****** “Your majesty, please calm down." Mami’s soothing voice woke me up. “Calm?! I have over one thousand guests! Four Lycan Kings! Everyone is gathered here to see Princess Selena get married and you want me to calm down?” My eyes flew open as Father shouted and I blinked away the gloom from my head. Pain racked through me as I felt the hollow ache in my chest where my mate Bond had once resided. “Mami?” I sat up to face her and her palm cupped my cheek immediately. “Stop coddling her and get her prepared instantly!” Baba hissed at us while Nadira chuckled. “Prepared?” I whispered. “Prepared for what?” “Baba has decided that you’ll marry the dark prince to save the family name from the disgrace of your rejection,” Nadira chuckled. What?! The room seemed to spin around me and I raised one hand to clutch Mami’s skirt tightly. “What is she talking about?" Tears I didn’t realize I was holding leaked from my eyes. “Your majesty, please reconsider,” Mami begged. “You can’t seriously want to wed her to that cretin. Selena has bright blue eyes! Ringed with gold. If she were a man, she would be a lycan, and now you want to marry her off to that black-eyed monster?!” “He’s a prince! A more eligible match than the Beta she tried to marry." “But she just lost her mate,” Mami’s voice cracked with tears. “It’s too soon to marry her off,” “NO. We have people waiting for a ceremony,” Nadira argued. “Think of it, Baba. Do you really want that shame and stigma on our family? Then I would never be able to get married and your power as a lycan will be undermined. Lycan Kings and Alphas have traveled from the provinces for the wedding of your first daughter. So give them a wedding. The groom is insignificant.” "Nadira, stop it!” Mami hissed in anger. “Selena will never marry that madman—“ “ENOUGH!” Baba shouted and the room descended into silence. Before he spoke, dread pooled in my stomach. “Get ready. The ceremony is in fifteen minutes." That was all he said as he stormed out of the dressing room. “No, no,” my sobs threatened to choke me as Mami sank to the floor with me and held me. She stroked my hair as I cried and shook in her arms. “It’s okay, my princess. You don’t have to marry him. I still have family in Xintha; if we leave now, we can make it before nightfall." My head snapped up to Mami and I stared at her through my teary eyes in shock. What she suggested was treason punishable by death. “No,” I rasped in fear. “Mami, stop." “It’ll be okay. We won’t take any load; we just need some gold and—“ The determined look in her eyes sent chills down my spine. "No, Mami,” Maybe it was the strength in her voice. The uncertainty of my future or how I had watched my birth mother being cut down for showing courage. But I couldn’t let Mami do it. I couldn’t let her go against Baba’s decision, not when it could cost her life. I wiped my eyes and strengthened my resolve. I have no one. The only person who has loved me is Mami. I can never let her die because I would be well and truly alone. “Selena, you don’t have to,” Mami shook her head. “We could run. We’ll sell the gold and—" “No,” I refused and shook my head vehemently. “I have made a decision." My insides went numb as I whispered to Nadira’s delight. I’ll go through with the ceremony. I will marry the dark prince." The next hour passed in a blur. Mami feigned sickness because she couldn’t bring herself to watch me start my nightmare. Siha fixed my makeup in five minutes and the last time I saw Mami was when she dropped my veil. As I walked down the aisle with Baba at my side, I didn’t cry or scream. I was numb, watching the proceedings like it was an out-of-body experience. If the guests noticed Princess Selena was getting married to someone different from her mate, they didn’t mention it. My hand was tied to the substitute as the pack elder carried out the joining chants. “I Selena Frostblade. First daughter and Princess of Calantha, I take Kael Grimclaw, Bastard of the capital, Prince of Devania as my husband." The words fell from my lips silently and the substitute pushed the gold ring onto my gloved finger. I almost made it through the ceremony without breaking but as the ring was pushed onto my finger, far across the hall, on the top of the staircase, Prayan stared at me expressionlessly. My heart flipped. Did he realize his mistake? Was he coming for me? Did I— Not daring to take my eyes off him, I made to take off my ring and announce my love and willingness to forgive him. But wait. Why isn’t he coming down the staircase? Confusion and dreadful realization filled me as Prayan turned his back on me and walked away. It hurt like hell. It hurt more than the rejection. “I now pronounce you husband and wife!” The pack elder declared. Twin teardrops ran down my cheeks; the hall erupted in applause as the guests stood to their feet. Through it all, I couldn’t shake the victorious glint in Nadira’s eyes or the fake kiss she blew me from the front of the hall. Baba came to take my hand and guide me out of the hall towards where the royal carriage awaited to take me to my new province. On the outside, I was a beautiful bride holding her father. Inside I was frozen. Scared to look through my feelings lest I melt down in front of thousands of people. Rose petals and flowers were thrown in the air. Loud joyful music. Everyone pushed to say congratulations and the overwhelming perfumes of people mixed together. “Thank you, thank you!” Baba preened under the attention, his grip on me tightened as we moved closer to the exit. Several people pushed around just to catch a glimpse of me or yell a word at me. Nadira stood amongst the crowd smiling happily and as I approached, she leaned in and whispered. “Prayan is such a good guy. I didn’t even have to do much to convince him to dump you." What! My head whipped back wide-eyed to stare at Nadira but I had already been pulled away from her towards the exit by the crowd.“I don’t know." Rylan shook his head. I could see the honesty in his eyes. “When you passed out, I could barely think. All I wanted was for you not to die so I couldn’t focus on anything else. The medics rushed you here, your maid attended to you and I’ve been here ever since,”So Kael didn’t come to see me? My heart panged a bit. So what if the marriage was fake?If you saved somebody’s life, stranger or not. It’s only courtesy for you to come see if the person survived and how the person is faring. My lips pressed into a thin line. “How long ago was that?”Rylan blinked. “About three hours,”I swallowed as my stomach twisted in pain, “Okay, thank you. I’m going to sleep now so Faith can heal me some more,”Rylan gave me a nod and stood to his feet. “Alright, I’ll call your girl back in to stay with you. Get some rest? I’ll be back tomorrow,”I beamed at him. “Thank you,”I yawned and rolled to my side lazily. Wait! My side?!My eyes flew open and I sat up immediately. How could I si
Kael paused and placed a finger under my chin. He lifted my head up and stared into my eyes.My breath caught.“No,” he whispered. “Thank you. For not dying,”With that, he slowly let go of me. My entire body trembled, already missing his warmth.“Come on, go on,” he encouraged. His black eyes, watching me in concern.I gave a nod and hobbled forward. A few more steps and I busted out of the maze. The Arena exploded in deafening cheers. A few feet ahead of me, Ayesha was huddled over on the floor throwing up in terror. So she had come first. Then where was Lilith?I turned my head to search for her as the crowd continued to cheer me on. I hobbled a few more feet before my legs buckled and Rylan caught me by my waist. If he noticed my obvious outfit change, he didn't say anything. “You came second by a few seconds. Lilith is still in."I made it. I didn't die in the maze and I didn't come last so the king couldn't kill me either.I turned back to say something to Kael. Thank him or—He
It may not understand me, but it definitely understood my anger. It reared its head, turned around, and launched itself at me again.I could see its jaws wide open to clamp around my neck. I swerved as fast as my injured legs would permit and stuck out my hair pin at the same time.An infuriated roar from the creature let me know my hair pin had found its mark. Good. With as much force as I could muster, I pulled back my pin. Breathing heavily, I watched the monster. They had taunted me for my gold and my love for jewelry.A crazed laugh left my lips. Now I would show them all just how powerful jewelry could become in my hands.A low moan from behind me had me turning my head.Lilith! Her wolf must have been working really hard to heal her because she had regained consciousness.“Lilith!”That one second I turned back cost me dearly as the creature slammed against my side.I grunted in pain, my vision swimming and my blood leaking even more.I had bled so much that my blood was almost
I left my dagger in the other one.It roared again and one of its limbs smacked me.A scream tore from my throat as my back hit the wall and I fell to the floor gasping.A quick look down showed me that it had sliced across the stomach of my leather suit, leaving a gaping wound.“You’re losing blood. "Fast!" Faith panicked.“Find some way to staunch it. I can't touch it; my hands are dirty; I might infect it,” I begged her as I pushed to my feet with shaky legs. The creature clicked across the ground, observing me with its red eyes. It didn't move much but I wasn't fooled.A single movement from one of its limbs could end me. Slowly, I raised my hand to my hair and freed it from the golden hairpin.I took a deep breath and waited. Sure enough, the monster leaped for me; I bent low at the exact same time and dug my hairpin into its belly as hard as I could. The force had it crashing behind me, the pin dragging a deep line down its center as its guts spilled out.I stared wide-eyed, una
My heart thundered as I stepped into the maze. The rules were simple, find your way out in the least amount of time possible.Oh and also, there were no rules on how you could get to the end of the maze.Everything was allowed, the only major rule was you had to walk out of the maze on your two feet.Simple enough.Or at least that was how it had seemed to me for the first few minutes as I stepped into the maze. It smelled heavenly.Like spring flowers and fruits, the smell almost reminded me of home.Right. Faith and I made the decision to only turn right.I turned right and hissed loudly as my leg hit a stone. It would be comical if I died in the maze because of a stone, I looked up the maze. The sky was bright and sunny but it was fake. Before I entered the maze, it had still been morning, the sun in the sky but still a far way off burning this brightly.Unless time worked differently in the maze then the dryads had formed a fake sky. The only real display is the clock.I picked up
Chapter 42Selena’s POV “A position of power?” The king asked incredulously.I tore my gaze from Kael back to King Blanchard in time to see him nod.“Fine”I blinked. I could barely believe my ears. Fine? Did he just agree?“But your majesty—“ Queen Vidika spoke up. “A royal wife has never held a position of power in your royal council before,” she frowned.“Even I, the queen do not have such a position,”“As Luna Queen, you are far above that,” The King appeased her and turned back to me. His face twisted into something cruel.“You have made your demands Princess Selena. Now, it's time you listen to mine,”Fear flashed through Rylan’s eyes and not for the first time, my stomach clenched.“Go through the contest. If you or any of the other royal wives win. I won't deny you your place in my council. But—“ he paused for a bit.Playing with my mind as I almost went crazy thinking of what he would say.“But if, you. Selena. Royal wife of Devania and Princess of Calantha. If you lose this
