Slowly, Marie walked down the grand staircase, each step vibrating in her pounding heart. The house felt so different this morning; the silence was suffocating something you could almost taste on your tongue. The steps on which she stood were made of shiny marble, and as far as she could see, smooth and unmarked by the day and by footfall.

It was nothing like the vibrant house she had grown up in, knowing every creak and every corner was filled with memories. Here it is all too clean, too clinical, for a man with a criminal record.

Having walked to the dining room, she saw Aaron sitting at the head of the table. He sat rigid with his hands cupping a coffee cup, looking at the newspaper lying on the table in front of him.

Aaron lifted his eyes as she came close, the look in his eye intense. His demeanor was calm but his voice had some tension when he said something. "You're late."

"Sorry," Marie muttered under her breath.

Marie settled into the chair, the room itself was silent, punctu

After breakfast, she went back to her lonely room. The hush and silence oppressed her as if the walls were gathering in on her. This was so because she missed her home so badly, she longed for the noise produced by her father preparing breakfast in the kitchen in their home, her bed, and the social order of things she had thought she would never lack.Everything was strange in this big mansion. Its halls and pure white walls seemed so very distant. It didn’t feel like home. It seemed to be something alien to whatever she had ever experienced.Marie sat on the edge of the bed and focused on finding something to look at to avoid the loneliness that seemed to be swelling inside her. She picked up her phone and ran her fingers through her call logs. There must be a way, maybe? Maybe her father could help. Perhaps it was not too late to return to the way things were before things spiraled out of control as they did now.Her fingers rested above the screen, but she did not type. Was it even

Marie exited the mansion, her footsteps weighted as they moved along the driveway. She couldn't dismiss the sensation that everything was eluding her grasp. The air was frigid, excessively so, and the glossy black SUV parked at the curb resembled more a prison than a mode of transport.Susann leaned against the car, an embodiment of aloof power, her gaze keen and anticipatory. As planned, she opened the door and signaled for Marie to enter. Marie paused, yet the unspoken force in Susann’s stare afforded her no chance for defiance. She slipped into the car, the cool leather of the seat pressing against her as the door shut softly behind her with a gentle, conclusive thud. The journey was lengthy, the path unfolding ahead of them like an endless horizon. The stillness enveloping them was heavy and stifling, and Marie could nearly perceive the buzz of her thoughts, more pronounced than before. What was happening? Where were they headed? What did Susann expect from her? However, Susann re

The next dress, a scarlet silk piece that flowed around Marie’s feet like molten lava, seemed even more unfamiliar. It adhered to her shape in a manner that made her painfully conscious of her own physique, a feeling she considered profoundly disconcerting. She felt vulnerable, not in a seductive manner, but in a way that stripped her of her individuality, leaving her as nothing more than a mannequin covered in luxurious cloth.Susann surrounded her, with her eyes narrowed in judgment. “Way too… clear,” she announced, brushing it off with a flick. "We require something more… sophisticated." "An element that murmurs affluence, rather than proclaiming it loudly."Marie’s image in the mirror gazed back at her, an unfamiliar figure dressed in elegance she didn’t know. The gowns, increasingly lavish with each one, seemed akin to costumes, facades intended to change her into a person she wasn't. Every piece of clothing she wore appeared to heighten the gap between her true self and the pers

They arrived at the magnificent staircase that ascended to the upper levels. The mansion was flawless, each detail perfect, but Marie couldn't rid herself of the sensation that the atmosphere of perfection was stifling her. Her heart raced within her chest, and with every step, the walls surrounding her appeared to constrict even more.At that moment, the noise of footsteps caught her interest. Aaron appeared at the top of the staircase, wearing a perfectly tailored suit. His deep-set eyes scanned her. His eyes lowered to the shopping bags in Susann's grip, and a slight, nearly unnoticeable smile played at the corners of his mouth."Well," he started, his voice rich and authoritative, "where did you both go?"Marie sensed a shiver run up her spine. She was uncertain if she desired to know the response.“We went to pick some new outfits for Marie,” Susann responded, her voice straightforward. "She will need them for tomorrow."Aaron lifted an eyebrow, redirecting his stare toward Marie

The SUV came to a gentle halt before the towering glass-and-steel building that loomed over them. Marie’s eyes grew large as she observed the enormity of the corporate structure. It was a contemporary architectural wonder, featuring smooth lines and shiny surfaces that captured the light like a glaring eye. The glass front appeared to rise infinitely high, suggesting the vastness of the empire it symbolized. For an instant, the immense sight of everything took Marie's breath away. It was everything she had envisioned a corporate headquarters to be and additionally-daunting, authoritative, and frigid.Aaron's voice interrupted her thoughts. “Stay in the car for a moment,” he ordered, his voice sharp and exact. He did not wait for an answer before exiting the SUV, the door clicking open with a noise that appeared to echo through the atmosphere.Marie paused for a moment. She looked at the looming structure again, her heart pounding. Being told she needed to adapt to this world was one t

The door to the boardroom closed behind Aaron and Marie as they walked in. The board members were already positioned, a selection of elegantly attired individuals who radiated influence and command. They did not stand up to welcome them, orprovide a single smile.Marie sensed their gaze on her while they made their way to the table.Aaron positioned himself at the top of the table, upright and authoritative. Marie stood next to him, her heart pounding. The hush lingered briefly until the chairman, a tall figure with silver hair and an aura of stark authority, finally addressed them. His tone was strong and exact."Mr. Sanchez," he started, leaning closer, his gaze examining Marie like a hawk evaluating its target. "You are, naturally, cognizant of the position you are anticipated to fulfill in the forthcoming plans for this company, correct?""Certainly” Aaron responded lazily.Another board member, a woman in her early forties with distinct features, interjected, her tone doubtful. Aaron shut off the engine as they arrived at the mansion. The dense silence within the car was tangible, with only the soft hum of the motor winding down breaking the stillness. Marie sat stiffly next to him, her hands clasped firmly in her lap, her fingers revealing a subtle shake. She maintained her sight directed ahead, attempting to dismiss the intense weight she experienced from the day's occurrences and the doubt hovering over her future. As the car came to a full halt, Aaron faced her. His face was inscrutable as he observed her, yet there was a trace of approval in his gaze. "You performed well there," he remarked, calm and somewhat calculated.Marie compelled a smile, but it seemed more like a reflex than a sincere display. "Thank you," she said softly, unable to meet his gaze.Aaron's stare rested on her for a brief moment more before he carried on. “Maintain the effort. Continue to amaze them. Continue to perform well, and I will receive the inheritance. That's the only way

Marie was startled at the tap on her door. She was absorbed in her thoughts, and the unexpected noise shocked her. She swiftly cleaned her face, attempting to regain her composure before the door swung open. Susann walked into the room with a composed and serene attitude."Good evening, Mrs. Sanchez," Susann said to her respectfully, her tone calm and professional. She moved with a sense of subtle authority, a quality developed from years spent working in the household."Good evening, Susann," Marie replied, her tone gentler than normal. She attempted to sit up taller, but the fatigue from the day pressed down on her.Susann moved closer and said, 'I received a report about the meeting. Based on what I’ve heard, you performed admirably, Mrs. Sanchez. You carried yourself with grace, and it hasn't escaped attention. Marie felt sick to her stomach when she woke up. The dull ache throbbed through her body, and she moaned as she slowly sat up. A reassuring gesture that had always calmed her hands automatically went to her stomach bump, but today it didn't help. It felt strange.Susann, who had been sitting close by, saw her stir and hurried over to join her. She put a delicate hand on Marie's arm while her eyes were worried. She said in a worried tone, “How are you feeling?” Marie swallowed forcefully, attempting to ignore the vertigo that was weighing her down. “Not great”, she muttered in a feeble voice. “I feel... unwell. What happened, and why am I here?” A stray hair fell from Marie’s forehead, and Susann’s face softened. Her eyes were full of sympathy as she said softly, “You passed out in the kitchen, remember? We have you here to recuperate. You were not doing well.”Susann went on using a steady but worried tone. “You have food poisoning," the doctor had said. He prescribed medication to

The only sounds in the bedroom were Marie's steady breathing and the slight hum of the rain hitting the windows. Although the storm outside had subsided, Aaron's inner turmoil persisted, growing more intense in quiet than ever before. He sat next to her, staring at her sleeping form with his fingers loosely laced together and his elbows resting on his knees. Slow, shallow breaths caused Marie's chest to rise and fall as she lay motionless. She no longer had the flush of pain that had hit her earlier; instead, she was paler and had a faint gleam of perspiration on her forehead. With a slight parting of her lips, her dark lashes spread out like shadows across her cheeks. She appeared to be the only thing that was pure in the midst of all this chaos, even now after everything had happened. Aaron couldn't take his eyes off it.He felt a sharp aching pulse of relief in his chest. She didn't get hurt. Despite the doctor's conclusion that she wasn't expecting the baby anytime soon, the baby

Aaron’s heart pounded in his chest as he ran down the hallway, barely registering the sound of the mansion's front door slamming shut. He had been torn like a lightning strike by Susann's emergency call, and his mind was racing with the worst-case scenarios. He whispered to himself, “Marie…” as he pushed open the master bedroom door. His gaze instantly fell on her. Her body, pale and limp against the soft white sheets, was still unconscious. Her skin had a thin coating of perspiration. As he knelt next to her and gently brushed a damp lock of hair away from her face, his heart lurched. His voice was tight just above a whisper as he asked, “Is she okay?” Susann stood next to him with her arms crossed over her chest. Her face was pale, and she had worried eyes. “Aaron, the doctor is en route. He'll understand what's happening.”Aaron took some time to respond. He kept his gaze on Marie, observing her chest's gradual rise and fall. He had a nagging suspicion that something was wrong...

Susann's silk robe was pulled tight around her as she made her way through the dim hallways to the kitchen. There was an eerie calm about the mansion tonight that made her chest tighten with something she couldn't replace.Although she didn't know what had gone wrong earlier, she had a feeling. There was an oppressive silence as if a storm had swept through the house. Just in time to hear the scream, she arrived at the kitchen hallway. It was like a blade cutting through the air. High. Angular. Identifiable.Marie.Susann's breath caught in her chest as she froze at the doorway. The tray she was carrying clattered noisily to the floor, broken by the impact of the porcelain. Her hands suddenly pushed open the kitchen doors with a violent lurch of her heart. Her heart raced with cold panic at what she saw. Marie lay on the floor, her hands gripping her stomach as she fell close to the counter. Now every breath she took caused her baby bump's gentle curve to heave.Sweat was dripping fro

It was too silent in the mansion. The cold tiles beneath Marie’s feet grounded her more than she liked as she padded down the hallway. Aaron's words kept repeating in her mind, and she had her arms crossed tightly across her chest, more out of nervousness than cold. She had to do something before the weight in her chest got too much. She turned on the warm lights above and walked to the kitchen. The room was immaculate—a pristine shell concealing the decay underneath—because it was cleaned every day just like the rest of the house, not because anyone used it.Reaching over to the counter, Marie filled the kettle. To her senses, the sound of the running water was like static. After gently putting the kettle back down, she leaned both palms on the counter's edge and let out a slow exhale.I was described as a distraction. The memory made her stomach churn. Aaron had expressed his anger in a very quiet way, but there had also been a wounded and dangerous look in his eyes. When he decla

The far-off crash sounded like a gunshot in the middle of the night, echoing down the hallway. When Marie heard the muffled sound of wood splintering, she had just arrived at the end of the hallway. Her fingers tightened around the folds of her robe as she stopped, her breath caught in her chest. There was silence after another thud. A tense rather than peaceful silence filled Aaron. She made no hesitation. Turning on her heel, she rushed down the corridor. When she arrived at his room, her bare feet hardly made a sound on the marble floors. Her hand hovered over the doorknob as she paused at it.A shiver went down her back. She gave a soft knock. “Aaron?” Not responding. Slowly opening the door, she saw the chair near the far wall broken in two.“Aaron?” she repeated a little softer this time as she entered and shut the door.He didn't move right away. His fists were clenched at his sides, his head was slightly bowed, and his shoulders were tense. Papers scattered on the floor, a br

With such force that the walls shook, Aaron rushed into his room and slammed the door shut behind him. Through the void of the enormous mansion, the sound reverberated like thunder. He was pacing with his shoulders stiff and his fingers twitching at his sides as if they were searching for something to rip apart as soon as the lock clicked into position. He had his jaw clenched, his teeth grinding in unspoken rage. He felt angry—an unstoppable storm. The lamp by his bed flickered from the disturbance in the air as if even the light itself was uncertain whether to remain, and the shadows in the room seemed to grow longer with each step he took. The oak bookshelves, the velvet curtains and the chilly steel-framed pictures of people posing as a family all seemed to belong to him. Howard. Aaron was furious, and his footsteps echoed his anger like war drums on the hardwood floor. No longer was his heart thumping in his chest out of fear. That had long since burned out. Now he sensed somet

Aaron’s breath came in sharp, ragged bursts as he strode through the long dark hallway, his steps heavy. His father's remarks were reverberating in his mind like a vicious taunt, and he was consumed by a storm of rage. “You’re nothing without me.”. . . His knuckles turned white as his fists clenched so tightly his nails digging into his palms. It seemed as though the mansion itself was attempting to ensnare him in its ruthless, frigid clutches because the air around him was heavy and oppressive. He was hardly aware of the dim glow of the wall sconces as the hall stretched out in front of him with dark wooden panels reflecting it. He could hear and feel nothing but his own rage hammering unrelentingly. He could still hear his father's voice in his ears. . . “You’re toying with me.” With a start, he halted his boots scuffing the shiny floor. His chest was heaving, and his breath was harsh as he struggled to maintain his balance. Tonight his father had said far too many things, but th

The smell of whiskey filled the dimly lit study, clouding the space with a strong, almost oppressive odor. Howard sat behind his desk, he swirled the amber liquid in his glass while staring into the depths of the drink.A firm and pointed knock was heard on the door.Howard called “Come in” in a steady, low voice that showed no signs of the storm that was building inside.Aaron entered as the door squeaked open. His stance was straight, his face tight with annoyance, and he stood tall. Howard closely observed him, his keen eyes scrutinizing each nuance and facial movement. Aaron was very much a reflection of himself; he was obstinate, strong-willed and self-destructive.“Aaron, sit. We must have a conversation.” Aaron, however, did not move. His body was tense as he stood there staring at Howard’s face. His voice was tight as he said. “I'm not here to sit. I'm here to know why you called me.”The corner of Howard’s mouth curled into a thin smile as he raised an eyebrow. Savoring the
