LOGINDante’s POV I stand outside the commission building alongside Ricardo and a few of my men. Today is the day I exact my revenge. I push through the front doors and walk in alone. My men remain outside as per the protocol. I walk down the hallway and all I can think about is putting a bullet through Kane and Deluca's stupid heads. I just have to stay calm and get through the meeting. I open the giant oak doors and walk in. All twelve heads turn as I step in. I don’t acknowledge any of them. I just walk straight to my seat next to Edwardo, who is sitting at the head of the table. Edwardo has been the head Don for the past twenty years. He was my father's best friend and my Godfather. He clears his throat and begins. “Dante,” he says, voice calm. “Thank you for coming.” I say nothing, letting the silence sit. Kane is two seats down from me smiling from ear to ear. Deluca is right next to him, leaning without a care in the world. “We are all family,” Edwardo says.
LENA’S POV I woke up in the hospital room alone. When I turned to my left, Dante was gone. When I turned to my right, there was only darkness. I tried to get up but winced in pain. I reach for the call button, but my hands stop halfway. I hear tiny footsteps approaching. I turn my head slowly, and standing in front of my bed is a little girl. Around 3 or maybe 4. She has dark curls and big brown eyes. She looks just like me but has Dante's eyes. “Hey, baby,” I whispered. My voice cracked. “Come here.” I opened my arms. The girl tilted her head, watching me. “Mummy,” she said, and the word hit me like a bullet. Tears burn my eyes. “Yes, baby. It’s me, come to mummy.” I push myself up, ignoring the pain shooting through my side. I reached for her and she took a step back. “Don’t,” she says and I freeze. “What do you mean, baby? It’s okay. Mummy’s here.” Her little face crumpled. “You couldn’t protect me.” Her voice is small and accusing. “No, no, sweethea
DANTE'S POV The city is dead silent as I drive through it. The engine's sound engulfs the car. My hands are tight on the wheel and my knuckles are slowly turning white. I’m out here driving because I can’t sit still for one more second, while Lena is still in the hospital. I pick up my phone and dial Ricardo. He answers on the first ring. “Boss.” “What do you have?” He pauses. “You’re not going to like it.” “Try me.” “I dug into the family accounts like you said. There are transfers, small at first from 20k here to 50k there, and then it keeps getting bigger. All of it routed through shell companies and dumped into offshore accounts.” My jaw ticks. “Who authorized it?” “Signatures look clean. But the timing...” Ricardo’s voice drops. “Every big transfer happened 48 hours before something went wrong. The warehouse hit, the attack on Lena, and the most recent one being before Lena was pushed.” The road suddenly blurs in my rage. So it was an insider. I had my s
DANTE'S POV Ricardo is leaning against the wall across from Lena’s room. Two of my men are on each door. Another four are covering the elevators, the stairwell, and the garage. I’m going to ensure nobody gets to her. I look at Ricardo and notice the sour expression on his face. “What’s wrong?” I ask him. “Boss, the commission called,” he says. “They want a settlement to bury the hatchet.” “Over my dead body.” I turn to him fully now. “There will be no settlement until I get my pound of flesh.” Ricardo’s face remains stiff. “They’ll try to force it.” “Then let them,” I say, my voice flat. “My wife was pushed down the stairs in MY own house, so I don’t give a dam what the commission has to say.” A muscle tics in Ricardo’s jaw. “Yes, boss.” We start moving down the hallway, away from the rest of my men. “What do we know?” I ask. Ricardo glances at me. “About what, boss?” “Kane and Deluca, I need anything
LENA'S POV I wake up to a loud beeping sound. I open my eyes and notice everything is white. My whole body feels... empty and hollow. I try to sit up and a sharp pain tears through my stomach. I gasp. “Lena!” Dante’s strong hands are on me instantly. He looks like he hasn’t slept. His shirt is wrinkled and has blood on the collar. “Easy. Don’t move too fast.” He eases me back down, one hand behind my back, one on my shoulder. “How are you feeling?” He says. I blink. “Good... I think. But I feel a bit different.” He pours water into a glass and holds the straw to my lips. I drink but it hurts going down. “What happened?” he asks quietly. I try to think but my head is all foggy. “I was... at the party. I was getting your present from the room upstairs. And then…” My hand goes to my head. “I remember the stairs. And then someone... someone was behind me. A hand. On my back.” Dante’s whole body goe
DANTE’S POV Her blood drips as we rush into the hospital. It’s all over my hands and on my shirt. I tried to scrub it in the car but it just smeared deeper. “Trauma one!” a nurse yells as we crash through the ER doors. “Pregnant, 3 months, fell down stairs, massive bleeding!” Ricardo was behind me, voice breaking. They take her in on the stretchers already placing an oxygen mask on her. I grab her hand and she squeezes back once, but it’s weak. Then the doors shut. “Family waits here, sir.” I sit down and I can feel my insides shaking. How did I let this happen? Why couldn’t I protect her? Ricardo stands by the door with two men securing the perimeter. Every 10 seconds I hear a crash from inside and every 10 seconds I think that’s the sound of them telling me she’s gone. “I should’ve called the private doc,” I mutter. “Should’ve put more men on the stairs. Should’ve….”
