Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Baby
Raymond's expression changed, and half of his bravado instantly disappeared. After a long while, he stammered, "Y-You were the one who asked Mr. Price to transfer me to Team A."

"Do you think your performance back then was good enough to get you into Team A?"

He lowered his head even further. "No, it wasn't."

I was about to continue when Audrey shrieked and sprang to her feet. "Why are you guilt-tripping him, Esme? That has nothing to do with this matter. You refused to sign the petition, and as a result, his wife collapsed at home with no one there to help her. You're the one in the wrong here!"

I raised my head to look at Audrey indifferently. However, she avoided my gaze, and her face turned beet-red. "Why are you looking at me, Esme? Am I wrong? I know you've helped me a lot in the past, but are you really going to use that against me now? Am I not even allowed to speak the truth?"

I chuckled and shook my head. "I haven't even said a word, Audrey. Why are you getting so worked up? Since everyone's here, let's clear the air once and for all. That way, certain people can stop poisoning the well behind the scenes and playing everyone for a fool."

I walked up to Raymond. His expression changed drastically, but I didn't give him a chance to flee.

"When you were in Team C, you were constantly overworked and sidelined, and your girlfriend was about to break up with you because you couldn't make enough money. I thought you were an honest, hardworking guy, so I decided to give you a hand and transferred you to Team A.

"In the two years since you joined us, you not only saved enough money for your wedding but also managed to make the down payments on a house and a car. That's also the reason your girlfriend agreed to marry you.

"What, you didn't remember how good your team leader was to you when you married your wife, but now that your wife fainted, you're blaming me? Was I the one who married her?"

All the color drained from Raymond's face. "E-Esme, I'm sorry. I—"

I cut him off and continued, "For the last five years, ever since I became the leader of Team A, how many bonuses have I split among you, and how much performance have I brought you? Merely because I didn't sign the petition, every single one of you started giving me the attitude.

"Let's be real here—who's willing to come forward and guarantee that the protest will definitely work if everyone signs it? Who's to say Mr. Price will listen? So the whole thing can't happen without my signature? And now I'm suddenly the villain of Team A?"

I walked over to Audrey. "Besides, this was a decision you made among yourselves. I'm under no obligation to sign it. I'm your team leader, not your mother!"

Having said my piece, I strode back to my office, ignoring my colleagues who were up in arms behind me.

I had just sat down when there was a knock on the door. "Come in."

I looked up and met the eyes of May Leister, who had just walked in.

Her cheeks were rosy as she set a cup of coffee on my desk. "I'm sorry, Esme. I was there when Raymond yelled at you earlier, but I didn't stand up for you... I was foolish. I bought their lies and misunderstood you. I'm really sorry!"

I accepted the coffee and flashed her a genuine smile. "It's alright. Head back to your desk, put your nose to the grindstone, and work hard for another promotion this year!"

After she left, a few more team members came to my office one after another to apologize to me, while others texted me their apologies, and I responded to each of them in turn.

At dinner time, Fiona and Daphne, who used to eagerly invite me to eat with them every day, were nowhere to be found.

When I walked into the cafeteria, the two of them, who had been chatting away, immediately shut their mouths the moment they saw me.

I couldn't help feeling a little exasperated. Both of them were well into their 30s, yet they were still playing these childish games of isolating people.

Daphne, however, refused to confess. The surveillance footage only captured her acting as a lookout for Fiona in the hallway, and their chat history wasn't enough to convict her. Ultimately, Daphne got off with a slap on the wrist. The cops merely reprimanded her before letting her go scot-free. Fiona completely lost it. She loathed Daphne with every fiber of her being. The two of them had plotted the whole thing together, and Daphne had even benefited considerably from it, yet in the end, Fiona was the only one who had to take the fall. Before the trial began, Fiona used the time she had while sorting out some paperwork to lie in wait outside Daphne's front door. The moment Daphne returned home, Fiona slashed her face with a sharp fruit knife before slitting her own wrist. By the time the ambulance arrived, Fiona was already dead, while Daphne was severely injured and permanently disfigured. …Meanwhile, as the company's clients terminated their partnerships with Verdant Co

Mr. Price trembled all over when he heard them. He slapped Patrick across the face. "What the hell have you been doing, you son of a bitch? How could you mess up such a crucial contract? Apologize to Mr. Ross right now!"The blow sent the latter sprawling onto the floor. He panicked, sweat pouring down his face like rain, and blurted out, "It wasn't me! Fiona drafted the contract, Dad. I just slacked off and didn't double-check it. Fiona must be trying to sabotage us!"Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that Fiona had already slipped toward the back of the crowd in the chaos, and she was just about to sneak away. I cleared my throat and called out, "Fiona, the press conference isn't over yet. Where are you leaving in such a hurry for?" Fiona stopped in her tracks and whipped around to glare at me. Her eyes were filled with hatred. In the blink of an eye, she charged at me like a madwoman. "Esme Myers, you bitch! I'll kill you!" But before she could take more than a couple o

Patrick's triumphant look completely vanished. He immediately turned on Daphne and barked, "How could you be so incompetent, Daphne? You don't even know something as basic as Mr. Ross' allergy! You useless fool, get those stupid flowers out of here right now!" Daphne stood frozen in place, clutching the bouquet. The reporters immediately trained their cameras on her as a barrage of shutter clicks filled the room. Her face flushed crimson from humiliation and rage. All of a sudden, her eyes locked onto me in the audience. She abruptly raised her voice and pointed at me. "It was you! You deliberately left that file behind, Esme!"As if she'd found a lifeline, she latched onto Patrick's sleeve. "It wasn't me, Mr. Patrick. It was Esme. She deliberately misled me and told me Mr. Ross liked lilies. I was set up!"In an instant, all eyes were on me.I put on a bewildered look and spread my hands. "I've resigned from Verdant Corp for half a month already. How could this possibly hav

I hadn't even been at Macrowave Technologies for a week when I heard Mr. Price was holding a press conference for his son, Patrick. May told me it was to celebrate Patrick's successful securing of the 300-million-dollar deal in advance, as well as to build momentum for him and help him make a name for himself in the industry. May texted, "By the way, that file you gave me was indeed tampered with, and the contract inside is missing, Esme. Also, Fiona is now a core member of Patrick's project team, while Daphne has even been promoted to Patrick's personal secretary!" I replied with a simple "Got it". Everything was falling into place just as I'd expected. To be honest, that "Mr. Ross confidential file" was merely a decoy. The real trump card was the contract I'd deliberately left behind. It was a contract that appeared flawless on the surface, but it was actually riddled with loopholes. I just hadn't expected Fiona and Daphne to stoop that low. …On the day of the press co

Mr. Price's eyes darted around, and a calculating note crept into his voice. "That works out then. If you don't want to be the team leader, you can just be a regular team member. Just so we're clear, though, your base salary and commission will be reduced too! Don't say I didn't warn you." I was genuinely amused by his shamelessness, and a chuckle slipped out. "What are you laughing at?"Noticing that he was about to lose his temper again, I hastily responded, "Let's be frank with each other, Mr. Price. If you let me leave on good terms, I can hand over the 300-million-dollar deal I'm currently working on to your son. "As you know, I've been on this deal for six months. It's practically on the home stretch."Dollar signs practically flashed in his eyes. Still, he pondered it for a moment before eyeing me skeptically. "How do I know you're not lying? What if you sabotage it behind my back?" Mr. Price reacted precisely the way I'd predicted. I took the opportunity to pull o

Mr. Price snorted. "Fiona and Daphne are senior employees. You're younger than them, yet you've been lording over them for years. It's only natural that they had a lapse in judgment. "When you get right down to it, this happens because you haven't done your job as a team leader properly! Stop being so self-centered and start paying attention to your team's mental well-being. "Now, go write a self-criticism report, and we'll call it a day."A million curses screamed through my head. I was well aware that Mr. Price was shameless, but I never expected him to be this shameless. He might as well have branded the word "unfair" across his forehead. Still, I wasn't planning to burn bridges just yet. "Mr. Price, if they dare to steal my signature and forge a document I never signed today, who's to say they won't forge your signature and use it to sign a contract tomorrow? "Isn't that fraud? What you're doing right now is aiding and abetting them!"Mr. Price hesitated for a second. I c
