Chapter 4

Author: Lucky Baby
However, I soon received some good news.

CEO of Prosperis Enterprises, Victor Ross, had texted. "Esme, I've decided to sign that 300-million-dollar deal with you after all! When are you free to come over and look at the contract?"

I smiled as I replied, "Thank you for trusting me! However, I'd like to sign this contract with a different company."

He responded in a flash, "That works! I told you, Verdant Corp is too small-time to house someone of your caliber. I'll be waiting for your good news!"

…

Early the next morning, I received an offer from Macrowave Technologies for the position of Sales Director, which was a massive step up from my current role as a team leader.

To be honest, I wasn't someone who cared much about fame or fortune. The former chairman of Verdant Corp had once helped me, and I was more than willing to devote my youth and passion to Verdant Corp.

However, ever since the former chairman passed away and the company was taken over by his nephew, Emmett Price, the current boss, things had gotten tricky for me.

The position of Sales Director—which was set in stone for me—went to Mr. Price's son, Patrick Price, who had just returned from studying abroad. I had intended to let it go, but in my previous life, he had also played a part in framing me and driving me to my death.

Just then, the office door swung open. It was Fiona and Daphne.

Fiona strutted in on her high heels before tossing a document onto my desk. "Here's the performance report for this quarter, Esme. Sign it."

I adjusted my glasses, picked up the report, and pored through it.

Daphne snorted. "Please hurry up, Esme. We still have work to do!"

I completely ignored their blatant provocation and leisurely went through the report. "No can do. This is my job. Besides, I have to be thorough. I can't risk letting people throw dirt on me, now can I?"

As soon as my words fell, I noticed that their expressions stiffened for a split second. Sure enough, when I ran my fingers over the last page, I felt a distinct difference in the texture of the paper.

My face remained stoic as I picked up my pen and signed my name on the last line.

Fiona and Daphne exchanged a glance. Fiona immediately snatched the report away, as if she was terrified I might take another look. Then, she hurried out of the office with Daphne.

I glanced at the clock, silently counting down the seconds. Sure enough, two minutes later, Mr. Price's furious roar came from his office.

"Esme Myers, get your ass over here!"

I picked up the resignation letter I had written long ago and strolled toward his office.

A crowd had already gathered outside his door, led by Fiona and Daphne, who couldn't hide the triumphant looks on their faces.

There were also some who looked genuinely worried. May was particularly anxious. "Be careful, Esme!"

I shot her a reassuring look, walked past Fiona and Daphne, and pushed the door open.

The moment I opened the door, I lowered my head, and a document whizzed past my head.

Mr. Price hadn't changed a bit across two lifetimes. I couldn't help but find it a bit amusing.

"You still have the nerve to smile? Open your damn eyes and look at what you've done!"

I picked up the petition from the floor and slowly placed it in front of Mr. Price. "Why don't you open your eyes and take a closer look, Mr. Price? Is my name really on it?"

Daphne, however, refused to confess. The surveillance footage only captured her acting as a lookout for Fiona in the hallway, and their chat history wasn't enough to convict her. Ultimately, Daphne got off with a slap on the wrist. The cops merely reprimanded her before letting her go scot-free. Fiona completely lost it. She loathed Daphne with every fiber of her being. The two of them had plotted the whole thing together, and Daphne had even benefited considerably from it, yet in the end, Fiona was the only one who had to take the fall. Before the trial began, Fiona used the time she had while sorting out some paperwork to lie in wait outside Daphne's front door. The moment Daphne returned home, Fiona slashed her face with a sharp fruit knife before slitting her own wrist. By the time the ambulance arrived, Fiona was already dead, while Daphne was severely injured and permanently disfigured. …Meanwhile, as the company's clients terminated their partnerships with Verdant Co

Mr. Price trembled all over when he heard them. He slapped Patrick across the face. "What the hell have you been doing, you son of a bitch? How could you mess up such a crucial contract? Apologize to Mr. Ross right now!"The blow sent the latter sprawling onto the floor. He panicked, sweat pouring down his face like rain, and blurted out, "It wasn't me! Fiona drafted the contract, Dad. I just slacked off and didn't double-check it. Fiona must be trying to sabotage us!"Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that Fiona had already slipped toward the back of the crowd in the chaos, and she was just about to sneak away. I cleared my throat and called out, "Fiona, the press conference isn't over yet. Where are you leaving in such a hurry for?" Fiona stopped in her tracks and whipped around to glare at me. Her eyes were filled with hatred. In the blink of an eye, she charged at me like a madwoman. "Esme Myers, you bitch! I'll kill you!" But before she could take more than a couple o

Patrick's triumphant look completely vanished. He immediately turned on Daphne and barked, "How could you be so incompetent, Daphne? You don't even know something as basic as Mr. Ross' allergy! You useless fool, get those stupid flowers out of here right now!" Daphne stood frozen in place, clutching the bouquet. The reporters immediately trained their cameras on her as a barrage of shutter clicks filled the room. Her face flushed crimson from humiliation and rage. All of a sudden, her eyes locked onto me in the audience. She abruptly raised her voice and pointed at me. "It was you! You deliberately left that file behind, Esme!"As if she'd found a lifeline, she latched onto Patrick's sleeve. "It wasn't me, Mr. Patrick. It was Esme. She deliberately misled me and told me Mr. Ross liked lilies. I was set up!"In an instant, all eyes were on me.I put on a bewildered look and spread my hands. "I've resigned from Verdant Corp for half a month already. How could this possibly hav

I hadn't even been at Macrowave Technologies for a week when I heard Mr. Price was holding a press conference for his son, Patrick. May told me it was to celebrate Patrick's successful securing of the 300-million-dollar deal in advance, as well as to build momentum for him and help him make a name for himself in the industry. May texted, "By the way, that file you gave me was indeed tampered with, and the contract inside is missing, Esme. Also, Fiona is now a core member of Patrick's project team, while Daphne has even been promoted to Patrick's personal secretary!" I replied with a simple "Got it". Everything was falling into place just as I'd expected. To be honest, that "Mr. Ross confidential file" was merely a decoy. The real trump card was the contract I'd deliberately left behind. It was a contract that appeared flawless on the surface, but it was actually riddled with loopholes. I just hadn't expected Fiona and Daphne to stoop that low. …On the day of the press co

Mr. Price's eyes darted around, and a calculating note crept into his voice. "That works out then. If you don't want to be the team leader, you can just be a regular team member. Just so we're clear, though, your base salary and commission will be reduced too! Don't say I didn't warn you." I was genuinely amused by his shamelessness, and a chuckle slipped out. "What are you laughing at?"Noticing that he was about to lose his temper again, I hastily responded, "Let's be frank with each other, Mr. Price. If you let me leave on good terms, I can hand over the 300-million-dollar deal I'm currently working on to your son. "As you know, I've been on this deal for six months. It's practically on the home stretch."Dollar signs practically flashed in his eyes. Still, he pondered it for a moment before eyeing me skeptically. "How do I know you're not lying? What if you sabotage it behind my back?" Mr. Price reacted precisely the way I'd predicted. I took the opportunity to pull o

Mr. Price snorted. "Fiona and Daphne are senior employees. You're younger than them, yet you've been lording over them for years. It's only natural that they had a lapse in judgment. "When you get right down to it, this happens because you haven't done your job as a team leader properly! Stop being so self-centered and start paying attention to your team's mental well-being. "Now, go write a self-criticism report, and we'll call it a day."A million curses screamed through my head. I was well aware that Mr. Price was shameless, but I never expected him to be this shameless. He might as well have branded the word "unfair" across his forehead. Still, I wasn't planning to burn bridges just yet. "Mr. Price, if they dare to steal my signature and forge a document I never signed today, who's to say they won't forge your signature and use it to sign a contract tomorrow? "Isn't that fraud? What you're doing right now is aiding and abetting them!"Mr. Price hesitated for a second. I c
