Chapter 2

Author: Spring Pool
My phone vibrated constantly after I set it on the table the entire night.

Nora's messages came one after another. The screen lit up, went dark, then lit up again. I didn't read any of them and muted my phone instead.

At nine the next morning, someone knocked.

Shane pushed the door open and came in, followed by the makeup artist. He had already changed into a dark gray suit, and his tie was the one I had bought especially for him. "It's time for your makeup. It's almost time."

I sat there without moving and said, "I told you. The wedding is canceled."

His expression darkened, and he frowned. "The guests are almost here. What are you trying to do now?"

I looked up and met his eyes, then laughed coldly. "I can't pretend nothing has happened. I can't marry a man who slept with my best friend. Shane… Don't you find yourself disgusting?"

Just as he opened his mouth and prepared to speak, the door was pushed open, and Nora rushed in. She wore a loose outfit, and her hair had been pinned up carelessly.

"Yuna, listen to me..." She said, rushing forward and grabbing my wrist. "It was an accident!"

I pulled my hand free. "There's no need to explain. Even if what happened four years ago was an accident, was the child also an accident? I treated you as my best friend all this time while you were secretly sleeping with Shane."

Nora opened her mouth, and tears spilled from her eyes. "Yuna, I..."

I lowered my head, and my eyes fell on the loose outfit she was wearing. A line of small words was embroidered on the collar.

Bayview Saint Anne Postnatal Retreat.

I suddenly laughed and turned to look at Shane. "No wonder you kept going to Bayview for business trips every few days and you wouldn't answer my calls or reply to my messages. You were there taking care of her. You were there seeing her.

"And here I was stupidly praying every day that your flight would land safely. I couldn't even close my eyes and rest until I saw your messages."

Shane pressed his lips together tightly and lowered his head.

Meanwhile, Nora started sobbing out loud. "Yuna, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to hide it from you..."

Shane hastily crossed the room and supported Nora. "You just gave birth to a baby. Don't stand for too long."

He helped her sit on the couch, then half-crouched in front of her and patted her back.

My gaze fell on the wedding ring on Nora's hand. It was three times larger than mine, the diamond catching the light with a dazzling shimmer. No wonder she thought mine was too cheap and did not mind letting me have it.

"Shane, I stayed with you for eight years." For a moment, I did not know whether to be angry at being looked down on or furious at their betrayal. "From that leaking rental apartment to the penthouse, from being unable to afford instant noodles to your million-dollar annual salary…

"The ring on my finger is not even a third of what you gave her. Am I worth that little to you?"

Shane shot to his feet, his expression dark. "Enough! She just gave birth, and she hasn't recovered yet! Stop it already."

"Fine. I'll stop." I turned around, took my phone from the bedside table, and walked toward the door.

Before I had taken more than a few steps, I ran straight into Joanna, who was wearing a wine-red traditional dress. The smile on her face vanished when she saw me. "Yuna, what time do you think it is? You haven't even started with your makeup? Where are you running off to?"

"Home. I'm not getting married," I said.

Joanna froze for a second. "What did you say?"

"I said the wedding is off. I'm not getting married," I said.

Joanna's face flushed red. "Yuna Sutton! Are you toying with…"

Before she could finish, she looked over my shoulder and saw the people inside the room. Nora was sitting there in a loose outfit, tears still on her face.

Joanna paused, and her expression changed. "Nora, you just gave birth. Why are you here?"

I froze.

Then, I understood everything. All I could feel was how laughable this whole affair was.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 10

Shane stayed in Windsoar for two weeks. He tried every method he could think of. Flowers, gifts, kneeling, apologies… But I did not want any of it anymore. On the seventh day after he started, he finally could not take it anymore. That day, I came out of the guesthouse as usual, planning to take a walk by the Grand Lake. Shane was crouching at the door. When he saw me come out, he stood up abruptly. But he got up too fast, and his legs became numb for one moment, and he dropped straight to his knees in front of me. I stopped and looked down at him. "Yuna." His voice trembled, just like his entire body. "Tell me. What exactly do I have to do before you'll forgive me? Tell me. No matter how hard it is, I'll do it. Even if you want me dead." I looked into his eyes and said nothing. He suddenly lifted his hand and slapped himself hard. "This slap is for you. I should never have gotten involved with your best friend." He slapped himself again. "This slap is for your moth

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 9

Shane did not leave. He stayed in Windsoar as well. Every morning at seven, he would crouch outside my guesthouse, waiting for me to come out. Sometimes I would wander through the ancient town. Sometimes I would go to the Grand Lake and sit there in silence. He followed me from a short distance. He did not dare to come too close, yet he was also unwilling to stay too far away. On the third day, he bought a huge bouquet of hydrangeas and left it at the guesthouse front desk with a note: [You said this color was your favorite.] When I passed by the front desk, I glanced at it but did not take it. On the fourth day, he found out I liked the rosehip pastries from a shop in town. He waited in line for two hours, bought a box, and then left it on the steps outside the guesthouse. When I came back, I walked around it. On the fifth day, it started raining in Windsoar. He stood under the eaves across the street, holding an umbrella despite already being soaked through. When I ca

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 8

It was evening the next day when Shane arrived in Windsoar. He followed the alley from his colleague's photo until he reached the fabric shop. He stopped at the door, panting as he looked inside. No customers were in the shop. He went in and asked the owner. "Excuse me. Did a young woman come by recently? She was wearing a gray trench coat with long hair, about this tall…" He gestured to show my height. The owner thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yes. That young lady came here to buy some fabric. She said she wanted to make a bed for her cat at home." "Where is she staying? Do you know?" Shane asked. The owner shook her head. "I'm not sure about that, but it looks like she's staying here long term. She has come to our shop several times, actually." Shane thanked her and left. He stood in the middle of the alley, not knowing which way to go. So, he wandered through the ancient town without a plan. Every time he passed a guesthouse or inn, he would look up, hoping t

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 7

Shane began looking for me everywhere he could think of. First, he went to the cafe where we first met. It was in a small alley near the university district. The shop still looked the same. Green plants crept down from the balcony above while a wind chime hung by the door. He pushed the door open. The owner was still the same warm woman who loved to smile, and she paused when she saw him. "Shane? You haven't been here in years." "Ma'am, did Yuna... come by recently?" He asked. The owner thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No. That girl hasn't been here in a long time either." Shane thanked her and left. Then he went to the movie theater where we watched our first movie together. That old theater had been torn down years ago, and a mall had been built in its place. He stood at the entrance for a while, watching people come and go, but not one of them looked familiar. Finally, he went to the beach where we had decided to become a couple. The winter wind from t

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 6

One week passed, and Shane slowly realized something was wrong. During that week, he did not receive a single message or phone call from me. Even my social feed was silent, as if I had disappeared from the world. He could not sit still anymore. He left work early and drove to my office building. He parked by the roadside, leaned against the car door, lit a cigarette, and waited, his eyes fixed on the exit. By half-past five, employees started to come out. At six, the sky began to darken. Soon, it was seven o'clock, and most of the lights in the building had been turned off. However, he still had not seen me. Shane walked into the lobby and went to the front desk. "Hello, I'm looking for Yuna Sutton." The young woman at the front desk looked up at him, her expression a little strange. "Yuna Sutton? You mean Ms. Yuna, one of our directors? She has already resigned." Shane's mind went blank for an instant. "Resigned? When?" "A week ago," the receptionist said. "Last Tu

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 5

By the time Shane left the hospital and sent Nora back to the Postnatal Retreat, the sky had already gone completely dark. He drove in silence the whole way. Nora sat in the passenger seat and glanced at him from time to time. She still hadn't changed out of the loose outfit from the Retreat, and her wrists were bruised from what had happened at the bridal home. "Shane, don't blame Yuna. She really didn't mean to push me," Nora said in a gentle voice. "She was just in a bad mood today. When she calms down, I'll go talk to her properly." Shane's grip on the steering wheel tightened as he swallowed hard. "She wasn't like this in the past." His voice carried a weary tone he could not explain. "She used to think of others first no matter what happened. She never started fights with anyone either. How did she become like this..." Nora lowered her head and did not answer. Outside the car window, the streetlights passed them by one after another, Shane's face cast in shifting li
