[If I'm doomed to end this life in your hands, I'll accept it. Please set me free if there's a next life.]

After I survived the first wave of absurdity, all that remained was how painfully ridiculous I felt all of this was.

I crumpled the notes into a ball and threw them into the trash along with the wedding ring on my finger before looking up at Shane Evans. "In that case, turn tomorrow's wedding into your baby's sip and see party."

As soon as I finished speaking, the room fell into silence.

Then, there was a snort from the corner of the room, and everyone in the room began laughing.

"Yuna Sutton, stop with the act, will you? Everyone knows you practically begged for this wedding. How could you possibly call it off?" One of Shane's friends laughed so hard as he slapped his thigh, his eyes full of mockery.

"Exactly. You're definitely secretly thrilled Shane is willing to marry you. No need to act anymore," Another bridesmaid chimed in and took a sip from her glass.

I said nothing.

Shane lowered his head and picked the crumpled notes out of the trash one by one. He opened them and read them all.

Then, he looked up at me calmly, as if he had expected this moment all along. "Since you've already found out, I don't need to hide it anymore. The wedding will go on as planned. I'll still give you everything I promised you. Just don't go after Nora."

I laughed until my hands trembled and my chest hurt. They were the ones who had betrayed me, yet his words made me sound like the villain.

So many words were stuck in my throat, but in the end, only one question came out. "When did you two start?"

Was it when they told me it was a mere coincidence when I found out that they always hid from me and went out alone? Or was it when the three of us ate together, and he always took care of Nora's preferences without missing a beat?

Shane was silent for a few seconds before he said, "It was four years ago when the three of us went to the beach together."

I had a fever on that trip and had a terrible headache, so I went back to the hotel early to rest and sleep. I… had left the two of them on the beach to watch the sunset.

"We drank a little after that, and we lost control in the room next to yours. It was just an accident at first. But later... we couldn't help falling in love." After saying that, there was even a trace of relief in his eyes. It was as if he had finally spoken the words he had kept buried for four years.

Seeing my fists clench and my whole body shake, he once again said, "Nora wanted me to keep hiding it from you. She didn't want to destroy your happiness. I was the one who couldn't hold it in anymore. Don't go after her. She feels worse than you do."

I looked at his face and felt all the blood in my body boil. "She feels worse than I do? Shane Evans, I grew up with her! My mother treated her like her own daughter!

"But the reason you two were absent on the day my mother died was because you two were sleeping together in our bridal home. Don't you find that disgusting?!"

I walked forward and shoved him hard, resentment and rage burning inside me.

He didn't move and simply looked at me. "What I did was wrong. If you have any resentment, take it out on me. Don't hurt her."

Hearing that, my eyes turned red as my tears welled up.

In the past, he could not bear to let me suffer even the slightest grief. No matter what happened, he would always stand in front of me to shield me. But now, he stood in front of me to protect another woman.

All the strength suddenly drained from me. I said, "Since you love each other so much, I won't stand in your way. Forget about the marriage tomorrow."

He froze.

The laughter around us died completely as the atmosphere seemed to freeze.

He looked at my face. Two seconds passed before he spoke, and his tone softened. "Stop causing problems. Everything is already arranged. Your makeup session starts at nine tomorrow morning. I'll have the makeup artist arrive on time."

With that, he opened the door and left.

The people around us looked at one another, and no one dared to speak.

Caleb Smith coughed once and followed Shane as he mumbled, "I'll go check on him."

Everyone left one after another, and the door finally closed.

Soon, I was the only person left in the suite. The balloons above me were still swaying, and the whole room was filled with decorations for the groom's arrival tomorrow.

Three hours earlier, Shane had still been smiling as he held me in his arms. He said no matter how many games he needed to play tomorrow, he would bring me home.

But now, standing among these flowers and balloons, all that was left was how ironic everything was.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated, and I looked down.

It was a message from Nora: [Yuna, I'm so sorry! It's all because my company suddenly sent me on a business trip. I already booked my air ticket too.]

[Don't be mad. When I get back, I'll make it up to you with a huge present!]

Her tone was sincere and anxious, followed by several crying emojis.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

In the end, I only replied with one sentence: [Enough with the act. I already know everything.]

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 10

Shane stayed in Windsoar for two weeks. He tried every method he could think of. Flowers, gifts, kneeling, apologies… But I did not want any of it anymore. On the seventh day after he started, he finally could not take it anymore. That day, I came out of the guesthouse as usual, planning to take a walk by the Grand Lake. Shane was crouching at the door. When he saw me come out, he stood up abruptly. But he got up too fast, and his legs became numb for one moment, and he dropped straight to his knees in front of me. I stopped and looked down at him. "Yuna." His voice trembled, just like his entire body. "Tell me. What exactly do I have to do before you'll forgive me? Tell me. No matter how hard it is, I'll do it. Even if you want me dead." I looked into his eyes and said nothing. He suddenly lifted his hand and slapped himself hard. "This slap is for you. I should never have gotten involved with your best friend." He slapped himself again. "This slap is for your moth

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 9

Shane did not leave. He stayed in Windsoar as well. Every morning at seven, he would crouch outside my guesthouse, waiting for me to come out. Sometimes I would wander through the ancient town. Sometimes I would go to the Grand Lake and sit there in silence. He followed me from a short distance. He did not dare to come too close, yet he was also unwilling to stay too far away. On the third day, he bought a huge bouquet of hydrangeas and left it at the guesthouse front desk with a note: [You said this color was your favorite.] When I passed by the front desk, I glanced at it but did not take it. On the fourth day, he found out I liked the rosehip pastries from a shop in town. He waited in line for two hours, bought a box, and then left it on the steps outside the guesthouse. When I came back, I walked around it. On the fifth day, it started raining in Windsoar. He stood under the eaves across the street, holding an umbrella despite already being soaked through. When I ca

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 8

It was evening the next day when Shane arrived in Windsoar. He followed the alley from his colleague's photo until he reached the fabric shop. He stopped at the door, panting as he looked inside. No customers were in the shop. He went in and asked the owner. "Excuse me. Did a young woman come by recently? She was wearing a gray trench coat with long hair, about this tall…" He gestured to show my height. The owner thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yes. That young lady came here to buy some fabric. She said she wanted to make a bed for her cat at home." "Where is she staying? Do you know?" Shane asked. The owner shook her head. "I'm not sure about that, but it looks like she's staying here long term. She has come to our shop several times, actually." Shane thanked her and left. He stood in the middle of the alley, not knowing which way to go. So, he wandered through the ancient town without a plan. Every time he passed a guesthouse or inn, he would look up, hoping t

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 7

Shane began looking for me everywhere he could think of. First, he went to the cafe where we first met. It was in a small alley near the university district. The shop still looked the same. Green plants crept down from the balcony above while a wind chime hung by the door. He pushed the door open. The owner was still the same warm woman who loved to smile, and she paused when she saw him. "Shane? You haven't been here in years." "Ma'am, did Yuna... come by recently?" He asked. The owner thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No. That girl hasn't been here in a long time either." Shane thanked her and left. Then he went to the movie theater where we watched our first movie together. That old theater had been torn down years ago, and a mall had been built in its place. He stood at the entrance for a while, watching people come and go, but not one of them looked familiar. Finally, he went to the beach where we had decided to become a couple. The winter wind from t

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 6

One week passed, and Shane slowly realized something was wrong. During that week, he did not receive a single message or phone call from me. Even my social feed was silent, as if I had disappeared from the world. He could not sit still anymore. He left work early and drove to my office building. He parked by the roadside, leaned against the car door, lit a cigarette, and waited, his eyes fixed on the exit. By half-past five, employees started to come out. At six, the sky began to darken. Soon, it was seven o'clock, and most of the lights in the building had been turned off. However, he still had not seen me. Shane walked into the lobby and went to the front desk. "Hello, I'm looking for Yuna Sutton." The young woman at the front desk looked up at him, her expression a little strange. "Yuna Sutton? You mean Ms. Yuna, one of our directors? She has already resigned." Shane's mind went blank for an instant. "Resigned? When?" "A week ago," the receptionist said. "Last Tu

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 5

By the time Shane left the hospital and sent Nora back to the Postnatal Retreat, the sky had already gone completely dark. He drove in silence the whole way. Nora sat in the passenger seat and glanced at him from time to time. She still hadn't changed out of the loose outfit from the Retreat, and her wrists were bruised from what had happened at the bridal home. "Shane, don't blame Yuna. She really didn't mean to push me," Nora said in a gentle voice. "She was just in a bad mood today. When she calms down, I'll go talk to her properly." Shane's grip on the steering wheel tightened as he swallowed hard. "She wasn't like this in the past." His voice carried a weary tone he could not explain. "She used to think of others first no matter what happened. She never started fights with anyone either. How did she become like this..." Nora lowered her head and did not answer. Outside the car window, the streetlights passed them by one after another, Shane's face cast in shifting li
