Chapter 4

Author: Frosty
Sylvie and Hayden rode home in silence.

After much contemplation, she finally explained hoarsely, "Today is Joshua's birthday. When he was little, he experienced a stampede accident at school, leaving him with deep mental trauma.

“I didn't mean to leave you behind. I was planning to leave him in a safe place first, then come back to pick you up."

After four years together, Hayden had grown accustomed to her icy tone and deliberate criticism, so he was not used to her forced explanations.

The reason she ignored his plea was simply that Joshua was more important to her.

He understood.

Besides, he was about to leave soon and no longer cared. He just nodded slightly. "I understand. You don't need to explain so much. Otherwise, I'll delude myself into thinking that you're in love with me."

Sylvie's face darkened all of a sudden, her tone growing colder. "I just feel like I haven't fulfilled the responsibilities of a fiancée. It has nothing to do with love."

'Responsibilities?' Hayden thought, letting out a sigh of relief.

This transaction would be over soon.

The burden on her was about to be lifted, and the shackles on his heart were about to be removed.

Once they arrived home, Sylvie brought out the first-aid kit and began tending to his wounds.

Perhaps fearing she might cause him pain, she cleaned the injuries with extreme gentleness and care.

Her gentle care was so different from her usual demeanor that it caught Hayden by surprise.

Before long, her phone rang.

Seeing it was Joshua, she stood up and answered immediately. "You hear footsteps outside your door? Lock it from the inside. Don't be afraid. I'll have someone take care of it."

Hayden caught a glimpse of the name on the screen, and his eyelashes fluttered slightly.

She did not leave after ending the call, instead picking up a cotton swab. Hayden could not help but speak up. "Your childhood sweetheart is in danger. Aren't you going to go check on him?"

Sylvie's hand paused. "Didn't we agree on some terms? Unless previously arranged, I'm not to leave you, whether we're out together or at home, to go attend to someone else."

It turned out she was only staying because of those terms.

Hayden rubbed his brow and then waved his hand dismissively. "Since the situation is dangerous, go ahead and check on him today. Consider this a one-time exception."

He had once refused to let her go home even when her mother and brother complained that their roof was leaking in the middle of the night. However, he agreed to let her spend time with Joshua today.

Sylvie was taken aback. Sensing that something was off, she wanted to get to the bottom of it. "Why?"

"Aren't your mother, your younger brother, and your childhood sweetheart the three most important people in your life? If something were to happen to them, wouldn't you be haunted by guilt for the rest of your life?

“I'm just trying to be helpful. Whether you go or not is entirely up to you."

Hearing his languid tone, Sylvie froze, her gaze on him mixed with complicated emotions. However, she did not deny it. Quickly composing herself, she grabbed her keys and headed out.

Once she left, she never returned.

Hayden did not ask where she had gone. He simply tended to his wounds and went to rest.

The next day, he gathered his belongings, packed them, and arranged for a courier to ship them to Areland.

In the process, he unearthed various items they had bought as a couple—things he had bought for her, along with photographs he had insisted they take together...

He threw them all away.

On the third day, he met up with a few friends at a bar. After drinking a bit too much, he could not find the private room he had reserved.

He stumbled around, searching upstairs and downstairs, until he stopped outside a room on the first floor, where he suddenly caught a familiar name.

"Sylvie, are you really planning to call off your wedding for Joshua’s sake? We've all seen how genuinely Hayden has treated you over the years. Are you really going to bite the hand that’s been feeding you for years?”

"Hayden isn't a bad guy, but he's got the attitude of a spoiled heir. If Sylvie marries him, won't she be completely under his thumb for the rest of her life? I say call off the wedding! Making him panic will take his arrogance down a peg or two!"

"I think so too. He's clearly head over heels for you. He's spent a fortune on you, gone against his family's wishes, and even proposed to you himself. It's obvious he's crazy about you.

“Even if you leave him at the altar, he'll come crawling back to apologize. When that happens, just take the opportunity to give him a way out, and you won't have to keep pampering him anymore."

Amidst the chatter, Sylvie sipped her drink, remaining completely silent.

Seeing her say nothing, her friends began to probe, unable to gauge what she was thinking.

"Sylvie, what's actually on your mind? If you're really going to leave him at the altar, the rest of us are bringing our cameras to capture all the drama!"

"Exactly. Say something! What are you hesitating for? Don't tell me you've actually fallen for Hayden? If that's the case, I guess you won't be leaving him after all."

Through the gap in the ajar door, Hayden caught a glimpse of Sylvie's face.

It was cold as ice.

"Falling for him? How could anyone ever develop feelings for someone who forced them into a relationship from the very beginning? All these years, I've felt nothing but loathing for Hayden."

In the hospital corridor, the glaring red operating-theater light glowed. Sally slapped Sylvie across the face, her voice trembling. "You monster! That's Joshua! Joshua, who grew up with you! How could you say such things to provoke him?"Sylvie did not dodge. Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Her eyes were vacant, mumbling to herself, "I didn't mean for him to die...""What's the use of saying that now?" Flora suddenly lunged at her and began to beat her, her sharp nails leaving scratches all over her. "If anything happens to my son, I'll make you pay for it!"The operation light went out.The doctor pushed the door open and stepped out, his face grave as he sighed slightly. "Sorry. We did our best. Our condolences. "The corridor fell silent at those words. Then, Flora began wailing.Sally staggered back a step, while Sylvie suddenly burst into laughter. The laughter grew louder and finally turned into a hysterical fit of laughter. "Karma! This is all karma... We we

Online public opinion was originally overwhelmingly critical of Hayden, but it reversed overnight. The evidence Liam released was like a grenade, shattering Joshua's carefully crafted image of a victim.Chat records, surveillance videos, and even hospital diagnosis certificates showed that Joshua's so-called suicides were carefully designed. The most damning voice recording was of Joshua smugly boasting to his friends on the eve of Sylvie and Hayden's wedding."That fool Sylvie! All I have to do is pretend I'm going to jump off a building, and she'll do whatever I say. I even managed to stop her from going to the wedding to Hayden for me. So what if he's her official boyfriend? He still can't compare to me."The insults suddenly turned on Joshua, with everyone piling on him at once.Sylvie was just stepping out of the airport when she received the news.A call from her assistant interrupted her as she was heading to collect her luggage. "Ms. Scott, this is terrible! Mr. Gillman

"You didn't have any evidence either, but you still firmly believed that I bullied Joshua, didn't you?"Hayden’s emotionless words left Sylvie frozen in place. The man in her memory, who always smiled gently at her, now wore an unfamiliar, distant look.Hayden supported Jasmine, lowering his gaze at the trembling Sylvie. "Why are you always so self-righteous? You protected Joshua without any reason before, and you accused me of being vicious when I did nothing. “You simply brushed aside the harm you caused me and said he was still young. I think I made myself clear enough yesterday. Sylvie, who is it that keeps pestering me and making a fuss non-stop?"Sylvie's eyes were red as she opened her mouth to say something, but Hayden was not looking at her. He supported Jasmine back to the mansion and closed the door with a thud.Once they were away from the view of outsiders, Hayden indifferently pushed Jasmine away from him. "Jasmine, who asked you to do all that?” His voice grew c

The moon hung high in the sky. Sylvie followed Hayden and Jasmine, eventually parking her car at the entrance of the Simpson villa. She watched Jasmine help Hayden enter the mansion and not come out for a long time. Seeing the mansion brightly lit inside, she did not dare go up and ring the doorbell. The curtains in the master bedroom upstairs were drawn, and she could vaguely see two figures moving inside. Soon, the lights went out, and the mansion fell into a silent darkness.Sylvie's hand, hanging at her side, tightened, her sharp nails piercing her palm. She did not even feel the pain. She pondered, 'Who is that woman? She has nothing in common with Amelia. Why did Hayden allow her to stay by his side?'Sylvie thought she most resembled Amelia. As long as she could stay by Hayden's side and as long as he could change his mind, she would do anything he asked. Her thoughts were in a complete mess. Her eyes were red, but she dared not approach the mansion. She seemed to have l

"Joshua kept threatening suicide. If I didn't pretend to agree with him, it would have been a life lost... Besides, my family members have always... “Anyway, Hayden, come back with me. This time, I'll ignore them. You're the one I love. I have to be with you. They’ll understand eventually!"The cool night breeze carried Sylvie's words straight to Hayden, sobering him up almost instantly. He looked at the panicked Sylvie in front of him and smiled sarcastically. "Sylvie, you knew all along, didn’t you?"His voice was light, but his words cut like a knife. "Joshua faked those suicide threats."Sylvie's pupils contracted suddenly, and her lips trembled. "I... No, he... He really...""That came later." Hayden interrupted her, his gaze clear and cold. "You kept enabling him again and again, and that is what made him more and more twisted."He straightened his windblown clothes, his voice frighteningly calm. "Just like how you knew I was using you as a substitute, yet you still chose

Business receptions abroad were much the same as back home, filled with people in elegant outfits, clinking glasses, and flowing drinks.Hayden held a bottle of champagne and stood in the corner, watching the unfamiliar faces. No one here knew his past. They only knew that he was the sole heir of Simpson Group. Everyone's gaze toward him contained only respect. No one looked at him with pity or nosiness."Mr. Simpson." Jasmine appeared beside him at some point, holding a cup of water. "Don't drink so much liquor."Her fingertips felt cold as they removed the glass from his hand."Why don't you mingle with the others?""My job is to follow you." She replied as if it were the most natural thing. "Of course, I will follow you wherever you go."Hayden's eyes crinkled slightly. "No need. You can leave work early today."Jasmine looked straight at him and suddenly asked, "Can I ask you a question?""Go ahead.""Do you regret coming to Areland?"Hayden froze. For a moment, he did n
