Chapter 5

Author: Aurora
The Pack healer rushed in with his assistants. When they saw the wound on my arm, everyone gasped in shock.

The cleaning process felt like torture.

Each time the moonlight herb solution touched the festering, infected wound, my whole body spasmed. Cold sweat soaked through my hospital gown.

I bit down hard on my lower lip. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, barely keeping me from crying out in pain.

Just then, the infirmary room door was gently pushed open. Elara stood at the entrance with red-rimmed eyes.

When she saw the wound the Pack healer was treating, she immediately covered her mouth with her hand. Tears streamed down her face like broken pearls.

"How could this happen? I followed the healing steps from the ancient texts exactly - cleansing with moonlight herbs, applying healing salve, bandaging. I was so careful with each step. How could the infection get this bad? Damien, I really didn't mean for this to happen. I just wanted to make Sera more comfortable."

She cried with such genuine emotion, as if she had suffered tremendous injustice and guilt.

She stumbled toward Damien and grabbed his sleeve, trembling all over.

"Damien, you have to believe me. I really don't know why this happened. I only wanted to help Sera. Am I just useless? I can't even do such a simple healing right."

The Pack healer had just cut away a small piece of dead, rotting flesh. Hearing this, he looked up as if he wanted to say something.

But his gaze swept between Damien's dark expression and Elara's pitiful crying. In the end, he just offered flattering agreement.

"Miss Elara, don't blame yourself too much. These frostbite infections from improper wilderness treatment are very complicated. You meant well. And looking at this bandaging technique, it was indeed very professional. It might be Miss Thorne's own constitution or some other issue."

Damien's face was so dark it could drip water.

He stared at my horrible-looking arm. His brows were knotted tightly, his jawline tense.

For once, he didn't immediately agree with Elara. He didn't blindly blame me like he usually did. He just stayed silent, the pressure around him frighteningly low.

Elara's crying gradually quieted down. She glanced at him uneasily.

Finally, the Pack healer finished applying new moonlight herb salve and bandages. After giving a long list of care instructions, he left. Only the three of us remained in the room. The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Damien finally spoke, his voice somewhat hoarse.

"You'll be fine. Tell the healer if you need anything."

He was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked me.

"Does it hurt?"

I felt a bit dazed.

The high fever made my brain feel like mush. Many memories were blurry and unclear.

But his almost gentle attitude at this moment made me instinctively feel a strong sense of discomfort and wariness.

I unconsciously shrank back.

My reaction seemed to hurt him.

He pressed his lips together, his tone becoming stiff.

"Rest well. Don't cause any more trouble."

Just as I expected.

He paused, as if suddenly remembering something.

"You're badly injured this time. Let Elara go accept the Vanguard's Crest at next month's Northern Territory Warriors Assembly in your place."

I jerked my head up, unable to believe my ears.

That crest was one of the highest honors in the werewolf warrior world. It was complete recognition of my career. I had earned it with countless hours of sweat and scars.

It wasn't just a medal. It was acknowledgment of all my years of effort and sacrifice.

"Why?"

My injured vocal cords made my voice extremely hoarse.

Before Damien could answer, Elara timidly tugged at his sleeve.

"Damien, don't do this. That crest is very important to Sera."

She said this, but her eyes held a barely detectable hint of provocation as she looked at me.

"Although I've never stood on such a prestigious stage, I am a bit envious. And Sera is so badly injured now, it wouldn't be convenient for her to attend that kind of ceremony. But since she's unwilling, I can't force her to give it to me..."

Damien patted her hand soothingly.

"Elara is right. How can you go in your condition? Besides, Sera, you're going to be marked as my mate eventually. You'll be my Luna. The Luna of the Blackwood Pack doesn't need to show her face in public for these empty honors. Let Elara accept the crest for you. "

I almost wanted to laugh. My chest felt stuffy and panicked.

"I fought for my life to earn that..."

"Your life belongs to me!"

Damien interrupted me, his tone suddenly urgent.

"From now on, you'll stay by my side. You won't need to go anywhere or do anything. I'll take care of you. You can tend the pack gardens, read books, chat with me and Elara. Wouldn't that peaceful life be good?"

But I felt cold all over.

A dull pain came from the back of my head.

I looked up in a daze. The dull pain in my chest gradually faded.

I could barely remember what that boy used to look like - the one who would celebrate when I performed well in warrior training.

Just as Damien was about to touch me, Kaelen burst through the café door like a force of nature. The glass door slammed against the wall with a sharp crack that made everyone in the café jump. With a single gesture, his well-trained subordinates quickly moved in from their positions around the building. They pinned those bodyguards to the ground with swift, professional movements. The hired men didn't even have time to react before they were face-down on the café floor.Kaelen lifted his foot and kicked hard at the back of Damien's knees with precise force.Caught completely off guard, Damien's legs buckled and he crashed heavily onto the carpeted floor. His hands flew out to break his fall, but the impact still jarred his whole body."Kaelen!"Humiliation and sharp pain turned Damien's eyes crimson with rage.He struggled desperately to stand, his pride wounded as much as his body. But he was immediately held down by two of Kaelen, his grip firm on his shoulders."Let me go! Sera! Loo

After we cleared the air about my past, Kaelen seemed to completely let go of some invisible burden that had been weighing him down. The change in him was remarkable. He became more relaxed around me, more open with his affections. He even became adorably clingy in ways that made my heart flutter. He would naturally reach for my hand when we walked together, his fingers intertwining with mine like it was the most natural thing in the world.During quiet evenings, he would let me lean against his shoulder while reading, his free hand absently stroking my hair. Most endearing of all, he stubbornly insisted on personally helping me change my bandages every day. His touch was always gentle and careful, but his ears would turn bright red every single time. The sight of his embarrassment was so cute it made me want to tease him even more.Meanwhile, on the other side of this peaceful bubble we'd created, Damien's harassment became even more serious and unrelenting. He had somehow managed to

I was startled by Damien's sudden collapse and looked at Kaelen in panic."Why did he suddenly faint? He won't be in danger, will he?"My voice was filled with concern despite my confusion about the whole situation. After all, it was a human life at stake. I couldn't just ignore it completely, no matter how strange he had been acting.Kaelen only gave the collapsed Damien a cold, dismissive glance. His expression was completely unmoved by the unconscious man on the floor."Don't worry about him. He brought this on himself. Better that he's unconscious - at least it's quiet now."His voice held no sympathy whatsoever. He protectively guided me straight out of the healing chamber, his hand gentle on my back but his posture tense. There wasn't any intention of looking back or helping the fallen man.I thought about it for a moment and decided not to concern myself with the stranger either.Whatever his problem was, it wasn't my responsibility.Getting into Kaelen's car, we drove away in h

The healing chamber door was violently thrown open with a bang that echoed through the room.Damien stumbled in desperately, his movements frantic and uncontrolled. He looked like he'd been running for hours, his clothes disheveled and his hair wild. His face was deathly pale, drained of all color. But his eyes were frighteningly red, bloodshot and swollen. His gaze immediately locked onto me with laser focus, those bloodshot eyes churning with too many complex emotions to count.Pain, desperation, love, rage, fear - they all swirled together in a terrifying mix."Sera."He spoke my name like a prayer, his voice hoarse and trembling."Sera, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong, I really know I was wrong."He approached step by step, each movement shaky and uncertain. His hands reached out toward me, then fell back to his sides, like he was afraid to touch me."I shouldn't have doubted you, I shouldn't have hurt you over and over for that venomous woman."His voice broke with each word, growin

The constant care from the Frostfall Pack healers had worked wonders. My arm has improved a lot.Although my left arm was still fixed in a heavy metal brace, at least the constant day-and-night agony had finally ended. The sharp, stabbing pains that used to wake me up screaming were now just a dull ache. From the careful conversations between Kaelen and the pack servants, I pieced together fragments of my hazy past. They spoke in hushed tones when they thought I couldn't hear, but I caught enough words to understand.Damine was indeed my fiancé once, who had treated me terribly and even indirectly caused my severe injuries. The more I learned, the more confused I became about why I'd ever been with such a person.I thought to myself that forgetting such a man seemed like no great loss.If anything, it felt like a blessing. The day my latest test results came back, the Pack healer spoke very delicately. He used gentle words and soft tones, trying to cushion the blow. But I still underst

"Impossible, how could everything be gone?"He muttered to himself, his voice hoarse beyond recognition. The words came out broken and raw.Massive panic instantly overwhelmed him like a crushing wave. His breathing became rapid and shallow. His chest felt tight, like he couldn't get enough air.He frantically pulled out his own phone with shaking hands, nearly dropping it twice. He screamed incoherently at his assistant, his voice cracking with desperation."Restore all the data from her phone right now! Immediately! This instant!"His words tumbled over each other in his panic."I don't care what it costs! I don't care if you have to call in specialists! Get everything back!"His assistant was extremely efficient, probably terrified by the raw desperation in his Alpha's voice.Within minutes, the man was calling back with updates.Soon, the cloud backup data was being restored piece by piece.Damien's fingers trembled as he greedily opened the reappeared photos. His hands were shakin
