Abby's POV

“Alpha Hayden?,” I whispered, more to myself than anyone else.

Hayden’s eyes met mine, sharp and unreadable. A flicker of something passed through them. Curiosity? Annoyance? Or something else? I couldn’t tell.

“Thank you for the invitation,” Father said, breaking the tension. He gestured toward my mother. “This is my wife, Luna Marie.”

Hayden bowed his head slightly in greeting. “It’s an honor to have you here, ma’am.”

Father then turned to my sister and me. "These are my daughters," he continued with a grin. "This is Freya. She has recently achieved notable success within the pack and now holds an important position."

Hayden extended a hand, and Freya, glowing in the attention, took it with a confident smile.

“Glad to hear it,” he said, offering the barest smile.

Then Father turned to me.

“And this is Abby,” he said, his voice dipping. “My youngest. I present her for the arranged marriage with all due respect and consideration.”

The way he said it. So formal, so final, made my throat tightened.

Hayden turned to me fully now. “Pleasure to meet you, Abby.”

“Thank you for having us, Alpha Hayden,” I said, not sure if what I said made sense. I gave a polite nod and managed a small smile, but inside, everything trembled.

Hayden gestured toward a set of comfortable chairs arranged around a low table. “Please, have a seat,” he said, indicating the seating area. “We have much to discuss.”

As we approached the chairs, my heel caught on the edge of an elaborate decorative rug. I stumbled and crashed straight into a nearby table. Glasswares clattered and shattered to the floor.

The room's chatter stopped, and I felt every eye turn toward me. Their gaze is like daggers.

“Are you alright, Abby?” I heard Hayden’s voice cut through the silence. His tone was flat, lacking warmth.

My breath hitched. “I…I’m so sorry,” I stammered, my face burning with embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s fine,” Hayden interrupted, stepping back with a polite but distant nod. “Just be careful.”

I crouched, trying to pick up the broken pieces. “Don’t worry about it,” Hayden said without looking at me again.

Around us, whispers had begun.

“Is this truly the daughter of Alpha Thorn? She seems… not up to the mark,” one of the guests said disapprovingly.

“I’m sorry,” I repeated under my breath, wishing I could disappear. “At least I didn’t bring down the chandelier,” I added that in my head.

Hayden turned away. “Let’s move to the private lounge,” he said to my Father.

Father, with tight jaw, threw me a deadly glare before he muttered to Mother, “This isn’t how I wanted things to go tonight.”

Mother’s eyes narrowed with disappointment as she looked at me. “I hope this doesn’t ruin the evening,” she said, her tone icy. And then added before she moved away “Try not to embarrass us further.”

I looked down, unable to meet her eyes. Even their disappointment felt rehearsed. Like they’d expected me to mess up. As I used to like an incompetent daughter.

Freya stepped forward, offering me a hand with a faint, strained smile. “Let me help you,” she said, pulling me to my feet.

She signaled a waitstaff to clean up the spilled drinks. “Abby, I think it's best if you take some time to gather yourself,” she said, her eyes betraying her frustration. "I'll handle the rest."

I nodded, feeling the weight of my inadequacies. "Alright," I mumbled, heading towards the courtyard.

As I passed the door to the private lounge, I overheard Father and Hayden inside.

"Hayden, please, let's discuss this," Father's voice was desperate. "Perhaps we can find another arrangement. Maybe Freya would be a better fit.”

“No, Alpha Thorn,” Hayden interrupted sharply. “Freya’s not necessary. I will proceed with the marriage to Abby as planned, and I won’t negotiate further.” The finality and disappointment in Hayden’s voice were clear.

As the evening wore on, I sat quietly at the edge of the event with hands clenched in my lap. Not wanting to be seen, I tried to maintain a low profile. Meanwhile, Freya engaged effortlessly with guests, her graceful smile and lively conversations clearly showing her enjoyment.

After the event ended, my family and I gathered our things, ready to leave. The car ride home was filled with silence, broken only by the hum of the engine. The weight of my wolfless status felt heavier than ever making me more isolated.

As our car turned a corner, I caught sight of a familiar figure on the sidewalk. For a split second, my heart leaped into my throat.

"Derek!" I muttered, almost a whisper.

The figure moved into the streetlight, and the hope I had felt fizzled out when I saw that it was just a stranger.

I looked away quickly, feeling foolish. “It must be the stress,” I told myself, though I didn’t quite believe it. My fingers found the pendant at my neck, the one he gave me before everything changed. My heart ached as memories of jom flooded back.

“I miss him,” I whispered, my voice barely audible, the words spilling before I could stop them. “He always knew how to make things feel less… heavy.”

Derek was my only go-to person whenever the pressure at home became overwhelming.

And then, just like that, he vanished.

No warning. No note. Not even a goodbye. Just… gone.

Still clutching the pendant, I whispered to myself “Maybe I was stupid to hold onto it. To hold onto him.”

“Abby?” Father’s voice cut through my thoughts. “What are you mumbling about?” His eyes caught mine briefly in the rearview mirror.

"Nothing father," I replied quickly, not wanting to cause any more trouble, especially when it seemed their anger was finally fading.

And thankfully, he didn't press.

As I looked out the window, Derek’s absence felt like a gaping hole, a harsh reminder that some voids can never be completely filled. ‘Or so I thought,’ I reflected.

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    No More Hiding

Hayden’s POV I turned and found the little boy from yesterday boldly staring at me. There were no other customers inside, only the uniformed staff arranging tables for the morning rush. I wanted to act petty and scare the little boy off, but instead I heard myself explaining.“Hey, little guy! I'm no bad man!”“You are!” he declared, jutting his chin forward stubbornly.I sighed.Alex chuckled behind me. “This boy reminds me of you when we were small. Fierce and unapologetically bold.”“They even look alike,” Brian added, snickering.I shot them both a sharp look and turned back to the boy. “Where’s mama?”“Good morning, sir. Welcome,” a staff member approached with a polite smile. “Here are the menus. We’re still setting up, but we can take your order.”“Is…uhmm…Ruby on duty?” Alex asked shamelessly, smiling like a teenager freshly hit by Cupid. The staff didn’t get the chance to answer before a tall brunette stepped out of an office, carrying a little girl who giggled loudly in he

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    A Little Desperate

Hayden’s POV I couldn’t ignore the heavy weight pressing down on my chest as the city lights and buildings blurred past while Brian drove us to the hotel. My mind kept returning to that woman at the restaurant. I pulled Abby’s necklace from my pocket and held it tightly. If she was indeed the one, she had every right to keep me at a distance. But I needed to apologize for everything first, even if I didn’t deserve her forgiveness.Alex’s laughter beside me made me turn. His head rested against the back of the seat, eyes closed, arms folded across his chest, smiling like he was lost in some fairytale world, completely unaware anyone was watching.Brian’s snorted laugh drew my attention through the rearview mirror. He couldn’t hold it in.“I didn’t know finding one’s mate could feel this good. I need to up my game,” he said, chuckling between words.I let my lips curve slightly as I glanced back at Alex, still oblivious to the fact that we were watching him. Then the weight on my chest

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    Almost Recognized

Abby's POV I rushed into my office. The door clicked shut behind me, and I finally released the breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. One hand pressed to my chest, as if I could steady the ache pulsing there.“Mommy, you fine?” Asher clutched his ball, wide eyes full of worry.“I’m fine. Mommy’s fine, my love.” I forced a smile. “Don’t go out without my permission again, okay?”He nodded immediately.“Good boy.” I ruffled his hair, and he ran off to join Amy, who was already rearranging the toys she’d just scattered.I turned sharply to Jane. “Don’t let my kids go out without my permission. Do you hear me?”“Yes, ma,” she said, lowering her head.I sent her out to join the staff, then sank into my chair, trying to catch my breath, trying to stop the tremor running through me. I didn’t know seeing Hayden again, after more than three years, could shake me this badly. He almost recognized me. Thank the Goddess I didn't slipThe door opened and my heart lurched painfully, terrified

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    The Familiar Voice

Hayden’s POV I slid into the car beside Alex while Brian drove. Brian was the music type, unlike Alex and me. He tapped the screen, scrolling through genres until an old-school song played—My Girl by The Temptations. The only song I know the lyrics to by heart. I could sing it even if someone shook me awake in the middle of the night.I felt Alex’s eyes drilling holes into the side of my head, but I kept my attention fixed on my phone. He didn’t disappoint. “Childhood nostalgia, huh?” he muttered with that smug look he loved.I ignored him, smiling at nothing on my screen, pretending I wasn’t listening to either him or the song.He clicked his tongue and looked away.Good.I knew what he was driving at. That song used to be Amara’s song, back when I was a clueless teenager who thought strumming a guitar and singing it was a subtle love confession. But now, listening to it only brought one person to mind.Abby. The hundredth time I’d thought of her today. Maybe because I’d been keepin

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    My Boss Likes Your Food

Abby's POV“I think your scent is well-hidden now. Even if he comes close, he won’t perceive you,” Ruby said, sniffing me with a nod of approval.“Thank you, Ruby.”She shrugged. “What can I do with your stubbornness?”I rolled my eyes but smiled. Ruby never stayed mad for long, she always gave in eventually.Ever since Derek told me Hayden would be coming here, I’d been trying to figure out what to do. Avoiding my own restaurant because of him was out of the question. So I decided to hide both my scent and my appearance. Derek and Ruby hated the idea at first, but after going back and forth, they finally gave in when they realized I wasn’t backing down.Ruby did what she does best—spell. She concealed my scent and the twins’. As for my appearance, I braided my long auburn hair and pinned it up to look like a short bob. With a scarf and a nose mask, I would be unrecognizable at the restaurant.“You ready for training, Abby?” Derek asked, stepping out in his training gear. He looked ex

  • Forsaken by the Moongoddess    Not Even Close

Hayden's POV The war between the European wolves and the Australian wolves that I thought could be handled quickly had dragged on for over two years. Of course, we weren’t losing, but the prolonged conflict had caused serious divisions in werewolf kingdoms. The council finally decided to unify the kingdoms under one body. A single werewolf council with representatives from every continent. Liam’s supporters were exposed, their wolves stripped away, and they were banished to the underworld to face the goddess’s judgment. The humans among them were handed over to their authorities, facing lifetime imprisonment and confiscation of their properties. It was a decisive victory, but also a fragile peace. The council had called a national conference to formalize the unity, elect representatives for the newly formed global council, and ensure that the werewolf kingdoms stayed aligned. The conference started tomorrow in Australia. I had to leave tonight.“Here.” Valentina handed me a paper co
