The Wrong Knock

The house was unusually quiet that evening, the air thick with a kind of nervous anticipation. Tessa had spent the entire afternoon pacing the polished tiles of the grand sitting room, every sound magnified. The tick of the antique clock on the wall, the distant hum of traffic from the boulevard, the occasional clatter of pots from the kitchen where Ayisha was busy.

The house itself was no small house. Its wide, glass paneled windows looked out over trimmed hedges and a stone driveway. High ceilings arched above the dining hall, chandeliers glittering like captured starlight. The home was a fortress and yet tonight, Tessa felt exposed, vulnerable. She was about to open the door to Ares himself.

When the bell finally rang, her stomach dipped. She froze in the foyer, fingers curling at her sides. For a second, she almost told Ayisha to say they weren’t home. But then she remembered the children—Jamal, Kamal, Beauty, Pretty. Their faces…She had only seen them once, when

Tokyo! The private jet touched down in the pre dawn quiet of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, glinting against the runway lights. Inside, Ares sat with his phone in hand, scrolling through encrypted emails and spreadsheets, his face lit by the glow of the screen. Numbers, transfers, shell accounts, everything was in motion. By the time the world realized what he had done, his empire would no longer be rooted in the United States. It would be here, in Japan, where no one, not even his parents would be able to touch him.Only Julian knew.Julian, his most trusted confidant, had been with him since the first whispers of betrayal from Tessa and Ayisha. It was Julian who helped coordinate the silent relocation of several of Ares’s most profitable businesses: the technology import firm, the shipping lines, and the quiet little luxury goods company that had grown into a multinational under Ares’s hand. All of them now carried Japanese addresses, Japanese bank accounts, Japanese registrations. Ares La

Empty HandsThe late autumn wind rattled against the windows of the house as though it too sensed the storm closing in on Tessa and Ayisha’s lives. In the living room, Ayisha sat hunched over the glass coffee table, staring blankly at her phone screen. Her hands trembled as she scrolled through email after email, each one worse than the last. The “congratulations on your approved loan” message from the bank still sat at the top of her inbox like a cruel joke. Beneath it were the follow up notifications—the wired funds, the transaction receipts, the withdrawal confirmations. And at the very bottom, the email from her supposed “business consultant,” a man named Trent Rivers, who had promised them investment opportunities and marketing expansion for their beauty line. The last line of his message burned into her eyes every time she looked at it: Funds secured. Trust me, you won’t regret this. Now, just three weeks later, his number was disconnected, his office a ghost space in downtown M

MovesThe clanging of prison gates echoed like a funeral drum through the concrete halls of the prison. The place always smelled of rust, sweat, and despair. Chloe sat on the edge of her thin mattress, her head bowed, eyes bloodshot. Her hands, trembling, clutched at the only lifeline she thought she still had, Lady Bianca.Word had traveled through whispers and bribed guards that Bianca would come today. Chloe had begged, manipulated, and promised favors until the opportunity was arranged. When the warden finally called her name, Chloe stood, smoothed her rumpled prison uniform, and walked into the visitation room.Ares stopped visiting. He finalized their divorce. On the other side of the glass partition sat Lady Bianca. Elegant even in her simplicity, Bianca’s presence seemed to mock the grey walls around her. She wore a crisp white blouse tucked into black trousers, her hair swept back like a crown, her lips painted in the subtlest shade of crimson.Chloe’s chest tightened. If the

New plansThe screen glowed in the dim study, the only light in Ares’s mansion at that hour. Midnight wrapped itself around the house like a shroud, but Ares sat upright behind his mahogany desk, his sharp eyes fixed on the video call connecting. The signal was strong, crisp. Then Julian’s face appeared—bronzed, relaxed, the faint murmur of waves rolling from somewhere in the background. He was leaning back on a terrace chair, the twinkling Dubai skyline glittering behind him like a thousand promises.“Brother,” Julian greeted, his grin casual but edged with the weight of the secret they carried. “Your little angels are asleep. They ate too much ice cream, played in the pool until sunset, and then passed out like kittens. Dubai suits them.”Ares exhaled slowly, leaning back in his chair. His jaw unclenched slightly at the news. They’re safe. They’re happy. That’s all that matters.“I trust you’re keeping them away from the cameras,” Ares said, his voice a low command rather than a qu

Hidden TruthsThe desert sun blazed high above Dubai, spilling golden light over the glittering city. Skyscrapers rose like monuments of glass and steel, each one glinting against the cloudless sky. Palm trees lined the avenues, exotic cars roared past, and the hum of wealth filled the air.But far from the crowds, tucked in a quiet gated villa on the outskirts of the city, four children’s laughter carried across the courtyard. Jamal, Kamal, Beauty, and Pretty ran across the garden barefoot, their giggles echoing as they played a game of tag. A fountain gurgled in the center, and a shimmering pool reflected the sun like liquid diamonds.Julian, Ares’s closest confidant, sat beneath a shaded canopy with a glass of juice in hand, watching them. He was relaxed, dressed in linen, his face hidden behind designer sunglasses. To any outsider, he looked like a wealthy uncle enjoying a vacation with his nieces and nephews. The children weren’t on a trip. They weren’t here with their mother. Th

Hold on…Ayisha’s hands trembled on the steering wheel as she drove back, her knuckles bone white against the leather. The hum of the engine drowned beneath the roar of her pulse. Every time she blinked, she saw Damien’s smile, his wife’s soft eyes, the little children clinging to his legs. The picture perfect family. The lie she had walked into with open arms.“Bianca,” she hissed under her breath, her teeth grinding. The betrayal tasted metallic on her tongue. She should have known. Lady Bianca’s fingerprints were everywhere. The sweet, flirtatious jogging partner who just “happened” to appear at the right time, the sudden attention when she felt most vulnerable. Every word Damien had said, every late night call, every smile..it had all been a carefully constructed script. And she had fallen for it.By the time she pulled up outside the house, her rage was boiling, ready to spill. She slammed the door and stormed inside, her voice carrying through the halls.“Tessa!”Her friend app
