Chapter 2

Author: Lily Lee
The moat's water was bone-chillingly cold, but I didn't fight it. I simply allowed myself to sink into the depths.

I was almost home. I wondered what kind of pie Mom and Dad had bought this year.

Amid the engulfing darkness, someone seized my wrist, forcibly pulling me back out of the large body of water. "Kieran, what the hell do you think you're doing?"

I peeled my eyes open and found Esmeralda, who had been calm and composed just moments ago, drenched from head to toe. Her complexion was pallid, and she kept coughing as she glared at me with bloodshot eyes. "Do you think your fake suicide attempt can erase the harm you caused to Caelum?"

I watched calmly as she fumed and responded apathetically, "In that case, let me die. Isn't that exactly what you want?"

Caught off guard, her eyes blazed with anger. "Caelum just returned. I don't want you to cause him any more trouble."

Looking at her red-rimmed eyes, I was suddenly reminded of the past.

When the House of St. Clair was first condemned, Esmeralda had endured all manner of insults from everyone around her. She was sickly and prone to overthinking. Whenever she felt aggrieved, she never uttered a single word, but the corners of her eyes would turn bright red. I was the only one who could calm her down.

What right did she have to feel aggrieved now? For the last four years, she was the one who constantly ordered the handmaidens and page boys to torment me.

It seemed I wouldn't be able to end my life here. So, I picked up my belongings from the ground and prepared to head home.

When Esmeralda noticed I was walking home, she grabbed my wrist and refused to let go, trailing close behind me. "You've always been full of schemes. If I don't keep an eye on you, who knows what kind of stunt you'll pull on your way home? Once I hand you over to Calista, I'll never trouble myself with you again."

I stopped in my tracks. No one in this world wished for my death more passionately than my sister. Consequently, when I'd been banished from the palace, I hadn't even considered returning to Talbot Manor.

Now that I thought about it, I would have a better chance to end my life when I returned to Talbot Manor.

As soon as I crossed Talbot Manor's gates, I noticed that all the attendants were urgently cleaning Caelum's room, and the courtyard was filled with oleanders, Caelum's favorite flowers.

Calista was beaming when she emerged with a gift box. However, the moment she saw me, all the joy left her face. "How dare you show your face here! I thought you'd already died in the palace."

I stood rooted to the spot. I suddenly recalled that my older sister hadn't always been like this.

Calista and I had lost our parents when we were young. We only had each other to rely on, and we were each other's only remaining kin.

The Talbots were all skilled in medicine. Calista had set her heart on entering the palace and becoming the Chief Royal Female Physician of the Royal Medical Household. Hence, I ventured into the mountains to forage for rare herbs to earn enough money for her journey to the capital.

Rain made the slopes dangerously slick. While attempting to harvest a thousand-year Reishi mushroom, I lost my footing and broke my leg. That was the first time I'd ever seen Calista, who was usually soft-spoken, lose her temper.

She had sprinted so fast that she'd lost one of her shoes. She threw her arms around me in tears and told me she'd rather not go to the capital than lose me. She said that without me, she would have no home, and everything she had would lose all meaning.

However, after we took Caelum in, I was no longer the only younger brother in Calista's heart.

Caelum had a weak constitution, so Calista took the pills I'd spent years painstakingly refining and fed them to him. I'd been saving them to sell for money to buy the proper attire she'd need to enter the palace. Caelum, however, found them distasteful and secretly spat them out.

When I caught him, I merely chided him. Yet, Calista faulted me for being materialistic. "Kieran, do you really think those pills of yours are more important than Caelum's life?"

Later on, after Caelum ran away, Calista broke my fingers and removed me from the family tree. "A malicious person like you isn't worthy of learning our family's medical skills. From now on, you're no longer my brother!"

From then on, the hands I'd trained for more than a decade could no longer wield acupuncture needles. Even when I did menial labor in the abandoned palace, I was slower than everyone else and had to endure endless contempt and scorn.

Esmeralda looked a little odd as she hesitated for a moment before saying, "Now that Caelum has returned, Her Majesty has dismissed all her male consorts. It seems he couldn't accept it. He tried to take his own life twice before my very eyes…"

Calista frowned. "He's merely causing a scene. How could you be fooled by him, Your Grace? I know Kieran the best. Someone like him would never take his own life."

After hearing that, Esmeralda's expression softened. She shook her head and plastered a self-deprecating smile on her face, seemingly regretting how she'd lost her composure in front of me earlier.

Calista pointed at the gift box in her hand and looked at me with contempt. "I'm going to the palace to deliver this to Caelum. I don't have time to deal with you. By the time I get back tonight, you had better have already left—"

Before she could finish speaking, I plucked an oleander leaf from the plant beside me and popped it into my mouth.

Calista's expression changed drastically in an instant.

Caelum pretended to be calm and composed. "You must be seeing things, Esmeralda. Quite a few of the priests here were chosen for their frail demeanor, so they can easily be mistaken for women from a distance." Although she still had her doubts, she had always believed Caelum's words unconditionally. Caelum offered to escort me back inside personally and asked the other women to wait outside. The moment we were inside the church, Caelum dismissed his attendants. He grasped my jaw, bringing his face so close to mine that our noses almost touched. "So you want to beg them for help, huh? Forget it. Do you really think they have no idea that you're being tortured? No one gives a damn about you!"I curled my lips into a faint smile and reached out to touch Caelum's lips. In no time, his lips turned purple and then black. I had never intended to seek help from the female leads. My real goal was to use them to provoke Caelum. I had coated my hands with the poisonous insects' secretion

I was laid out in front of Caelum like a dead fish. I genuinely wanted to ask him why he had gone to such lengths to torment me. Yet, he beat me to it. "Look at you. This is what a supporting male character deserves. Don't look so surprised. I'm a transmigrator too, and I'm the male lead of this world. What makes you think a mere supporting character like you has the right to steal my female lead?"Realization dawned on me. Now, I wished Caelum hated me enough to kill me. I didn't want to play this game anymore. I didn't want to do the mission anymore. All I wanted was to go home. Caelum seemed to have read my mind because he scoffed. "Do you want to die? I won't give you the satisfaction. If you stay here for another year after failing your mission, your body in the original world will never wake up again. "I, on the other hand, will inherit your progress points and complete my mission. Don't blame me. The female leads in this world are just too damn hard to win over. "Ever

I felt as though I had been asleep for an eternity. In my dreams, I saw Mom and Dad looking at me through tear-filled eyes. "Don't be afraid, Kie. You'll get better. Your dad and I will sell everything we own if that's what it takes to pay for your treatment!"Hence, when the system approached me, I didn't hesitate for a second before agreeing to accept the mission. The system had frozen time in my original world. When I left, it had been Thanksgiving. Mom had told me she would bring home my favorite pie… In my dream, I completed my mission and returned home, only to discover that Mom and Dad were nowhere to be seen. I searched every corner of the house, but no matter where I looked, I couldn't find them. "Dad! Mom!" I cried out, waking up with a start. The first thing that came into view was Calista's face—a face that bore an 80% resemblance to my own. When she noticed that I'd come to, she didn't mock me for once. If anything, she hesitated for a moment before asking, "Did y

Everyone was stunned for a moment. Caelum's figure swayed for a split second, but when he noticed that no one had noticed his strange behavior, he hastily regained his composure and shook his head innocently. "I... No, that's not true! I didn't." Phoebe threw herself into Caelum's arms. Her heart ached for him. "We all know what kind of person you are, Caelum."Calista also stayed by Caelum's side, desperately attempting to cheer him up. "Ignore him, Caelum. I'll keep you company while we admire the moon later. My younger brother is far more ethereal than any celestial child."Everyone showered Caelum with affection. He broke into a smile. When he shifted his attention to me, his eyes held a glint of triumph and provocation. I scoffed. "See? I could utter a thousand words, and it still won't mean as much as a single look from him. What else do you want me to say? It's not like anyone will believe me anyway!"Gwen suddenly interjected, "I believe you, Kieran. Come home with me.

Phoebe's sword was razor-sharp. Even though she had pulled back at the last second, the blade had still sunk more than two inches into my skin. Because of the special pill I had been forced to take, the pain I felt was far more intense than what an ordinary person would experience. Blood trickled down my body, and I collapsed into the pool of blood beneath me. Fortunately, I just had to hold on a little longer. Soon, I would be going home! Bedlam broke out in the Princess' Palace. Everyone gathered around me. I felt someone pressing the fabric of their clothes against my wound to stop the bleeding. "Don't you dare close your eyes, Kieran Talbot!" For a moment, I thought I saw a familiar figure. Her face was weathered by the elements, and she affectionately called out my name. "Gwen." The moment her name slipped past my lips, countless memories from our youth flooded my mind. The House of Montgomery and my family had been close family friends for generations. When Calist

Oleander was highly toxic. However, because Caelum fancied them, Calista made sure it blossomed all year round in Talbot Manor. I was afraid someone might accidentally ingest the poisonous leaves, so I opposed planting them. Caelum became so depressed that he could barely eat a thing. "Kieran, is it because you don't like me that you refuse to let Calista plant oleanders for me?"Calista shielded Caelum behind her and sneered at me. "If you want to target Caelum, you should at least find a better excuse. Oleander leaves are so bitter. Who would ever accidentally ingest it? The moment you put it in your mouth, you'd spit it right back out!"Little did I know it would become the very means of my escape from this world. In no time, an intense bitterness coated my mouth. Suppressing the urge to throw up, I forced myself to swallow it down. At long last, I could return home!Calista tossed the gift box aside, rushed up to me, and repeatedly slapped my back. She pried my mouth open and
