Chapter 1

The lintel of the abandoned palace wasn't particularly high, so I had no trouble hanging myself from it. At long last, I was going home. I couldn't wait to reunite with my family in my original world.

I kicked my feet out, and an intense force immediately gripped my neck. As my consciousness faded, the lively palace music in the distance waned, and every memory of my time in this world flashed before my eyes like a kaleidoscope.

21 years had passed since I was born into the Beaufort Empire. I had four targets to romance, and as long as I could max out the favorability of just one of them, my terminal illness in my original world would be cured.

My four targets were all extraordinary women, ranging from gorgeous and aloof to gentle and adorable. However, because of Caelum Talbot, the male protagonist of this world, every single one of them hated me to the core and wished me dead.

In the end, the system declared my mission a failure. Now, I was granting their wish. I was about to leave this world.

My senses were fading, but I could hear someone calling my name. As soon as I could breathe again, a bucket of ice-cold water was dumped over my head, causing me to cough violently.

When I looked up, I saw a woman wearing a purple court official's uniform. She had a graceful figure and strikingly beautiful features. She rolled her rosary beads between her fingers as she stared at me, her expression somber.

Her face was far too familiar. Before I could stop myself, her name slipped out of my mouth. "Esmeralda?" I regretted it as soon as I said it.

As expected, she scowled when she heard her name roll off my tongue. "Don't call me by my name. You're not worthy!"

The gloomy, aloof woman standing before me was the iron-fisted Grand Chancellor, a figure who struck fear into everyone in the Beaufort Empire. She was also one of my romance targets, Esmeralda St. Clair.

Back then, after her family was wiped out, they were about to reduce her to a licensed courtesan. I had risked my life to rescue her, a severely injured and helpless young woman. I'd taken her home and personally nursed her back to health in half a year.

Having just lost her loved ones, she was like a wounded little beast. Esmeralda had flinched away whenever I tried to get close. I gradually broke down her walls and taught her to stop hurting herself.

She was determined to clear her family's name, so she'd concealed her identity and entered the palace, climbing the ranks one step at a time until she finally became the all-powerful Grand Chancellor.

After countless brushes with death, I had seen her at her lowest. I was once the older brother figure she trusted most. Regrettably, those days were long gone—four years gone, to be exact.

Four years ago, during Thanksgiving, I married Empress Phoebe Beaufort. Everyone came to offer their congratulations and blessings. Even the system believed I was on the verge of completing my mission.

However, after leaving behind a letter written in blood, Caelum mysteriously disappeared. Every single word in the letter was written in anguish, and he explicitly named me as the one who had driven him away.

My biological elder sister, Calista, had kicked me out onto the streets and declared that she wanted nothing more to do with me. Phoebe had annulled our engagement and aborted our child.

Esmeralda had abused her authority and had me sent to the abandoned palace, where I was subjected to torment from handmaidens and page boys every single day. "God knows how much suffering Caelum is enduring out there. A heartless monster like you should spend every single day atoning for your sins!"

During my four years in the abandoned palace, I'd endured endless torture. No matter how hard I tried or how many ways I sought to prove my innocence, no one was ever willing to believe me.

Now that Caelum was back and Phoebe was determined to spend the rest of her life with him, I was no longer allowed to stay in even the abandoned palace. Thus, the system declared my mission a failure. I had no choice but to end my life as soon as possible and return home to live out my final days.

Esmeralda ordered two page boys to haul me to my feet. When she noticed the rope burn on my neck, a trace of mockery flashed through her eyes. "The stage hasn't even been set, yet you're already itching to put on a show. If you really want to die, you've picked the wrong place. The abandoned palace's too remote. No one will be around to watch your performance."

I forced a smile. Did she really think I was only pretending to take my own life?

"Your Grace, since the abandoned palace is so remote, what brings you here? Did you come all this way specifically to see me?"

Esmeralda's expression hardened before she sneered. "Caelum's back. I won't allow you to ruin his happiness on this joyous occasion. If you want to end your life, do it somewhere far away from here!"

Esmeralda ordered her men to throw me and my belongings out of the palace gates. She gazed at me condescendingly, as if I was a filthy piece of trash. "Now that you're out of the palace, do you really think I give a damn whether you live or die?"

I raised my head and flashed a smile at her. That was the best news I'd heard all day. I was finally going home!

Without taking a single thing, I sprinted onto the moat bridge outside the palace walls and leaped straight into the river.

Caelum pretended to be calm and composed. "You must be seeing things, Esmeralda. Quite a few of the priests here were chosen for their frail demeanor, so they can easily be mistaken for women from a distance." Although she still had her doubts, she had always believed Caelum's words unconditionally. Caelum offered to escort me back inside personally and asked the other women to wait outside. The moment we were inside the church, Caelum dismissed his attendants. He grasped my jaw, bringing his face so close to mine that our noses almost touched. "So you want to beg them for help, huh? Forget it. Do you really think they have no idea that you're being tortured? No one gives a damn about you!"I curled my lips into a faint smile and reached out to touch Caelum's lips. In no time, his lips turned purple and then black. I had never intended to seek help from the female leads. My real goal was to use them to provoke Caelum. I had coated my hands with the poisonous insects' secretion

I was laid out in front of Caelum like a dead fish. I genuinely wanted to ask him why he had gone to such lengths to torment me. Yet, he beat me to it. "Look at you. This is what a supporting male character deserves. Don't look so surprised. I'm a transmigrator too, and I'm the male lead of this world. What makes you think a mere supporting character like you has the right to steal my female lead?"Realization dawned on me. Now, I wished Caelum hated me enough to kill me. I didn't want to play this game anymore. I didn't want to do the mission anymore. All I wanted was to go home. Caelum seemed to have read my mind because he scoffed. "Do you want to die? I won't give you the satisfaction. If you stay here for another year after failing your mission, your body in the original world will never wake up again. "I, on the other hand, will inherit your progress points and complete my mission. Don't blame me. The female leads in this world are just too damn hard to win over. "Ever

I felt as though I had been asleep for an eternity. In my dreams, I saw Mom and Dad looking at me through tear-filled eyes. "Don't be afraid, Kie. You'll get better. Your dad and I will sell everything we own if that's what it takes to pay for your treatment!"Hence, when the system approached me, I didn't hesitate for a second before agreeing to accept the mission. The system had frozen time in my original world. When I left, it had been Thanksgiving. Mom had told me she would bring home my favorite pie… In my dream, I completed my mission and returned home, only to discover that Mom and Dad were nowhere to be seen. I searched every corner of the house, but no matter where I looked, I couldn't find them. "Dad! Mom!" I cried out, waking up with a start. The first thing that came into view was Calista's face—a face that bore an 80% resemblance to my own. When she noticed that I'd come to, she didn't mock me for once. If anything, she hesitated for a moment before asking, "Did y

Everyone was stunned for a moment. Caelum's figure swayed for a split second, but when he noticed that no one had noticed his strange behavior, he hastily regained his composure and shook his head innocently. "I... No, that's not true! I didn't." Phoebe threw herself into Caelum's arms. Her heart ached for him. "We all know what kind of person you are, Caelum."Calista also stayed by Caelum's side, desperately attempting to cheer him up. "Ignore him, Caelum. I'll keep you company while we admire the moon later. My younger brother is far more ethereal than any celestial child."Everyone showered Caelum with affection. He broke into a smile. When he shifted his attention to me, his eyes held a glint of triumph and provocation. I scoffed. "See? I could utter a thousand words, and it still won't mean as much as a single look from him. What else do you want me to say? It's not like anyone will believe me anyway!"Gwen suddenly interjected, "I believe you, Kieran. Come home with me.

Phoebe's sword was razor-sharp. Even though she had pulled back at the last second, the blade had still sunk more than two inches into my skin. Because of the special pill I had been forced to take, the pain I felt was far more intense than what an ordinary person would experience. Blood trickled down my body, and I collapsed into the pool of blood beneath me. Fortunately, I just had to hold on a little longer. Soon, I would be going home! Bedlam broke out in the Princess' Palace. Everyone gathered around me. I felt someone pressing the fabric of their clothes against my wound to stop the bleeding. "Don't you dare close your eyes, Kieran Talbot!" For a moment, I thought I saw a familiar figure. Her face was weathered by the elements, and she affectionately called out my name. "Gwen." The moment her name slipped past my lips, countless memories from our youth flooded my mind. The House of Montgomery and my family had been close family friends for generations. When Calist

Oleander was highly toxic. However, because Caelum fancied them, Calista made sure it blossomed all year round in Talbot Manor. I was afraid someone might accidentally ingest the poisonous leaves, so I opposed planting them. Caelum became so depressed that he could barely eat a thing. "Kieran, is it because you don't like me that you refuse to let Calista plant oleanders for me?"Calista shielded Caelum behind her and sneered at me. "If you want to target Caelum, you should at least find a better excuse. Oleander leaves are so bitter. Who would ever accidentally ingest it? The moment you put it in your mouth, you'd spit it right back out!"Little did I know it would become the very means of my escape from this world. In no time, an intense bitterness coated my mouth. Suppressing the urge to throw up, I forced myself to swallow it down. At long last, I could return home!Calista tossed the gift box aside, rushed up to me, and repeatedly slapped my back. She pried my mouth open and
