Chapter 4

Author: Greencloud
“Isn’t a pink diamond a little too flashy?” Sienna sounded like she was complaining, but she could not hide the smile in her eyes.

“If you like it, it isn’t a waste,” replied Damian.

Four years ago, I wanted a small wedding. He told me hotels, flowers, and wedding dresses were nothing but traps designed to make people spend money. Due to that, we just invited six close friends and relatives over for dinner at home. We did not even exchange vows.

Now, Sienna was going through her list one item at a time. “Roses, a live band, dinner by the ocean, and a handwritten letter from you. I want all of it.”

“Okay.”

“And you have to put the ring on my finger yourself.”

“Sure.”

Every reply felt like it was being carved out of the four years I had spent with him.

Sienna asked again, “Damian, why did you marry her?”

He fell silent for a moment. “She’s suited for a quiet life.”

“What about me?”

“You’re different.”

“How?”

“She doesn’t need to be pampered.”

Sienna broke into laughter.

I pushed the door open. The suite was covered in roses, while photographs of Sienna from childhood to the present filled the walls. Across the four-tiered cake was written: [Sienna, four years later and you’re still the one person I’ll always make an exception for.]

It turned out that they had their own anniversary too.

Damian shot to his feet. “Elena?”

I looked at him. “You said you were only here to pay the deposit.”

“I just came to check on the birthday setup."

Sienna lifted a hand and brushed her hair back. The pink diamond caught the light, flashing painfully bright. “Elena, don’t make it uglier than it is. Damian just feels like he owes me. He gave up the person he loved most to marry you, after all. I don’t think it’s too much for me to accept a few gifts.”

“Sienna.” Damian’s voice was low, warning her to stop.

However, her eyes reddened as she asked, “Am I wrong? You promised me that even if you got married, you’d save all the romance for me.”

The room fell silent. For the first time, panic flashed across Damian’s face. “That was a long time ago. I didn’t mean it. Elena, let's go home first. I’ll explain everything.”

I took the scrapbook out of my bag. “Forty-three movie tickets, 12 train tickets, and four letters I wrote to you.”

I held it out to him. “Tell me one last time. What do these mean to you?”

Damian did not take it. He only frowned. “This isn’t the time for this.”

Sienna reached over and took the scrapbook from my hands, flipping through a couple of pages. “A bunch of scraps of paper, and you’re making this big a deal out of them?”

I reached for it. She stepped back. The scrapbook fell straight into the champagne bucket. The ice water instantly soaked through the pages. Movie tickets floated loose one after another, the ink bleeding into blurred black stains.

I bent down to retrieve them, but Damian grabbed my arm.

“That’s enough! Don’t make a scene on Sienna’s birthday. It’s just a scrapbook. You can make another one when we get home.”

Sienna hid behind him and said in a soft voice, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”

Damian handed me a tissue. “She already apologized.”

I did not take it. I simply crouched down and gathered the ruined pages one by one.

“Damian, I want a divorce.”

He stared at me for a few seconds. Then, of all things, he smiled. “Don’t threaten me with divorce. You’re just emotional right now. Get some sleep. You’ll feel better tomorrow.”

“I won’t.”

“Half the house belongs to me, and you don’t have an income. How are you going to live without me?”

I picked up the last movie ticket and slowly stood. “You don’t need to worry about that.”

He clearly did not believe me. He put the room key back on the table. “When you’re done throwing a tantrum, come home. I’ll stay and finish Sienna’s birthday. I’ll come back later.”

I looked at the roses behind him one last time.

For four years of marriage, he had taught me to cut down my desires, lower my expectations, and keep everything simple.

Yet every ounce of passion he had saved by doing so, he had given to someone else.

I walked out of the suite and called a lawyer. “Can gifts given to a third party during a marriage be recovered?”

“If you have evidence.”

I glanced through the screenshots of the transfers on my phone, the hotel bills, and four years of Sienna’s posts. “I have everything. Let’s sue.”

On my first birthday after the divorce, I ordered a small cake. There was no party, no room filled with roses. A few friends took me out for dinner. Some brought expensive gifts while others brought simple ones. Someone gave me perfume. Someone brought a book. Someone else showed up with a bouquet of white lisianthus.I accepted them all. Liking something did not make me vain. Having expectations was not a mistake, either. The real mistake was being told to restrain yourself while someone else was given all the passion you had been asked to suppress.Damian sent me a message that day: [Happy birthday.]I read it, then deleted it. Later, I heard from a mutual friend that he had sold the house. When the buyer came to see it, the only thing left in the living room was our wedding photograph. The realtor asked if he wanted it cleared out with the rest.He stood there for a long time before saying, “Leave it.”However, on the day the house was sold, the photograph still ended up

When the court granted the divorce, Damian said nothing. The clerk asked him to sign the papers. He put the tip of the pen down, but for a long moment, he could not bring himself to sign his name.“Mr. Pierce?”He lifted his head and looked at me. “Can we really not talk about this one more time?”“No.”“I’ll give you the house. The savings too.”“Just divide everything according to the judgment.”“I can give you back everything. All of it.”“Damian, I never wanted any of those things.”His eyes slowly reddened. “Then what did you want?”I looked at him. “Four years ago, I wanted a wedding. Three years ago, I wanted a bouquet of flowers. Two years ago, I wanted you to sit down and have a meal with me. One year ago, all I wanted was for you to remember our anniversary. After that, I stopped wanting anything.”His hand holding the pen began to tremble. “Why didn’t you tell me one more time?”“I told you so many times. Every time, you were the one who told me that real love di

After my lawyer submitted the complete conversation, Sienna deleted the post. A moment later, she called me. “Elena, let’s settle this between ourselves.”“How?”“I’ll return some of the things. You drop the lawsuit.""You need to return all of them.”“Some have already been sold.”“Then reimburse me at their current value.”Her breathing grew heavier. “Do you really have to destroy me completely?”“Sienna, four years ago, when you convinced me to accept Damian’s minimalist lifestyle, you already knew he was buying you gifts, didn’t you?”She remained silent. I continued, “Every time I had doubts, you helped him explain them away. You told me that a man who didn’t give gifts was a man who was sincere. And then you turned around and used your private account to show off every single thing he gave you. You didn’t love the gifts. You loved taking them from me.”Sienna suddenly laughed. “So what? You have the title of his wife. Am I not allowed a little compensation? Damian lo

Sienna showed up for the first mediation hearing too. She had taken off all her jewelry and carried nothing but a canvas tote. The moment she saw me, her eyes turned red. “Elena, we’ve been friends for so many years. Do you really want to leave me with nothing?”I placed the property list on the table. “None of it was yours to begin with.”“But Damian gave it all to me.”“Then let him buy it all again with his own money.”Damian sat across from me, his eyes fixed on me the entire time. The mediator asked, “Mr. Pierce, do you agree to the divorce?”“No.”“Is it true that you gave these assets to Ms. Moore?”He paused for several seconds. “Yes, but Elena knew about it.”I lifted my eyes to him.Damian continued, “She knew Sienna and I were close. She never objected all these years.”I gave a small laugh. “I only found out the actual amount yesterday.”“You saw her posts.”“Sienna blocked me from seeing them.”The mediator turned to Sienna. The color drained from her face.

Damian did not linger in the hallway. He went to deal with the seizure of Sienna’s belongings. At 11:00 pm, he came back and knocked on my door. “Elena, we need to talk.”I did not open the door. “Your lawyer can talk to mine.”“I’m not agreeing to a divorce.”“Then we’ll settle it in court.”There was a long silence on the other side before he said quietly, “Sienna and I never slept together.”My hand tightened around the cup for a moment. “So?”“I admit I handled the gifts badly, but I never betrayed our marriage.”“So you’re saying that as long as you never slept with her, four years of lies don’t count as betrayal?”“I owe her.”“What do you owe her?”Damian was silent for a moment. “When I was at my lowest, she was there for me.”“So was I.”In our first year of marriage, he suffered from insomnia and stayed awake all night. I sat with him until dawn. The second year, he was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer. I stayed by his side for seven days. The third year, he

The moment I finished speaking, the door behind me flew open. Damian came after me and grabbed my phone. “Who are you suing?” His eyes were locked on the screen, his expression darkening.I pulled my phone back. “Sienna Moore. Everything she received was bought with marital assets.”Sienna came rushing out after him, the smile on her face completely gone. “Elena, Damian gave me those things willingly.”“His consent doesn’t give him the right to dispose of my half of our marital property.”Damian stepped between us. “How much do you want? I’ll transfer it to you. Just leave Sienna out of this.”I looked at him. “Even now, you’re still protecting her.”“I’m trying to solve the problem.”“Your idea of solving the problem is making me be the understanding one again?”His voice grew heavier. “Do you really have to drag this into court and make everyone look bad?”“The one who should be embarrassed isn’t me.”I brushed his hand away from my phone. “Someone will be contacting you
