Chapter 3

Author: Greencloud
Damian caught up with me downstairs and grabbed my wrist. “The situation with the ring isn’t what you think it is.”

I tried to pull away, but he did not let go.

“Sienna’s birthday is next month. She wants to buy a ring, and I’m just helping her choose.”

“Doesn’t she have any other friends?”

“Elena, she just got out of a terrible relationship. Right now, she relies on me.”

“You’ve let her rely on you for four years.”

His fingers tightened around my wrist. “We’ve known each other for years. Of course, we’re closer than ordinary friends.”

“I’ve known her for years too.” I looked straight at him. “She’s my best friend. You’re my husband. So why is it that in the end, the two of you are the ones who are closest?”

Damian was silent for a moment.

“You’re my wife. She’s just a friend. It’s not the same.” He said it as though it were the most natural thing in the world, as though being his wife were enough to make up for every way he treated us differently.

I looked at him. “When we got married, I wanted to buy rings too.”

He remembered, and his expression darkened.

Back then, I took a liking to a simple matching set. It was nothing extravagant, and the pair cost just over 600 dollars.

Damian called wedding rings a trap created by consumerism and took me to a jewelry shop, where he bought us two 99-dollar silver bands instead.

Later, he lost his. I asked him three times about replacing it. Every time, he said there was no need.

At this moment, he said, “You already have a wedding ring.”

“Sienna isn’t married. Why does she need you to go ring shopping with her?”

“If she likes one, she can buy it. What’s the problem?”

Something in me simply went quiet, and I no longer had the strength to keep asking.

After we got home, Damian never mentioned the ring again.

For the next few days, he continued leaving early and coming home late, as though everything that happened that night had been nothing more than another insignificant thing I had overthought.

Then our wedding anniversary arrived. That morning, before he left, I asked if he could come home for dinner.

He glanced at his phone and casually agreed, “Sure.”

It was the first time in days he had not turned me down. I bought groceries and ordered a small cake for two.

That evening, Damian came home right on time. However, he did not even look at the dinner table. Instead, he went to the storage room, pulled out several cardboard boxes, and started clearing out the living room.

“There’s too much stuff in here. We need to get rid of some of it.”

He put our matching mugs into a box, the model kit we had built together, and one thing after another. Finally, he took the wedding photo off the wall.

I stopped him. “You’re throwing that away too? It’s the only framed photo we have together.”

“We can keep the digital copy.” He tossed the frame into the box.

The glass struck the bottom with a sharp crack, leaving a thin fracture across the surface. I crouched down to pick it up, but he reached out and stopped my hand. “Don’t. You’ll cut yourself.”

That small gesture made me hesitate. For a fleeting moment, I wondered if maybe he did care. Perhaps he simply had a different way of showing it.

Then he picked up the anniversary scrapbook I had spent four years putting together. “We don't need to keep this either.”

I immediately grabbed the other end. “Don’t throw it away. It’s full of our memories.”

Damian held my gaze for a moment, then slowly loosened his grip and let go. “Then keep it somewhere else. Just don’t leave it lying around.”

The moment he finished speaking, his phone chimed. When the screen lit up, I saw a photo from Sienna. She was standing inside a jewelry store, a pink diamond ring on her finger.

[I can't bring myself to choose without you here.]

Damian picked up his coat.

I said, “You said you’d have dinner with me tonight.”

“Can’t we eat another day?”

“It’s our wedding anniversary today.”

His eyes flicked toward the wedding photo inside the box. “Didn’t we agree not to celebrate anniversaries?”

“You were the one who said that.”

“You never objected all these years.”

“What if I object now?”

Damian stopped at the door. I forced my trembling hands to stay still and laid out the last shred of hope I had left. “Damian, stay. Just tonight.”

He looked at me for several seconds before picking up his car keys. “Don’t try to force me to choose like this. Sienna’s alone at the store. The sales associate is waiting for her. I’ll go pay the deposit and come right back.”

The door closed behind him, and I sat at the dining table for a long time.

Two hours later, Sienna sent me a message: [Elena, Damian’s had too much to drink. Bring his pajamas over, will you?]

A hotel room number was attached beneath it.

I did not bring his pajamas. I simply slipped the scrapbook he had almost thrown away into my bag and went to the hotel.

The door was not fully closed. I had just raised my hand when I heard Sienna laughing.

“I merely said I didn’t like your wedding photo, and you actually threw it away? Aren’t you afraid she’ll make a scene?”

Damian’s voice came through the crack in the door. “What’s there to make a scene about? She can’t leave me.”

Then came the soft click of a ring box opening.

On my first birthday after the divorce, I ordered a small cake. There was no party, no room filled with roses. A few friends took me out for dinner. Some brought expensive gifts while others brought simple ones. Someone gave me perfume. Someone brought a book. Someone else showed up with a bouquet of white lisianthus.I accepted them all. Liking something did not make me vain. Having expectations was not a mistake, either. The real mistake was being told to restrain yourself while someone else was given all the passion you had been asked to suppress.Damian sent me a message that day: [Happy birthday.]I read it, then deleted it. Later, I heard from a mutual friend that he had sold the house. When the buyer came to see it, the only thing left in the living room was our wedding photograph. The realtor asked if he wanted it cleared out with the rest.He stood there for a long time before saying, “Leave it.”However, on the day the house was sold, the photograph still ended up

When the court granted the divorce, Damian said nothing. The clerk asked him to sign the papers. He put the tip of the pen down, but for a long moment, he could not bring himself to sign his name.“Mr. Pierce?”He lifted his head and looked at me. “Can we really not talk about this one more time?”“No.”“I’ll give you the house. The savings too.”“Just divide everything according to the judgment.”“I can give you back everything. All of it.”“Damian, I never wanted any of those things.”His eyes slowly reddened. “Then what did you want?”I looked at him. “Four years ago, I wanted a wedding. Three years ago, I wanted a bouquet of flowers. Two years ago, I wanted you to sit down and have a meal with me. One year ago, all I wanted was for you to remember our anniversary. After that, I stopped wanting anything.”His hand holding the pen began to tremble. “Why didn’t you tell me one more time?”“I told you so many times. Every time, you were the one who told me that real love di

After my lawyer submitted the complete conversation, Sienna deleted the post. A moment later, she called me. “Elena, let’s settle this between ourselves.”“How?”“I’ll return some of the things. You drop the lawsuit.""You need to return all of them.”“Some have already been sold.”“Then reimburse me at their current value.”Her breathing grew heavier. “Do you really have to destroy me completely?”“Sienna, four years ago, when you convinced me to accept Damian’s minimalist lifestyle, you already knew he was buying you gifts, didn’t you?”She remained silent. I continued, “Every time I had doubts, you helped him explain them away. You told me that a man who didn’t give gifts was a man who was sincere. And then you turned around and used your private account to show off every single thing he gave you. You didn’t love the gifts. You loved taking them from me.”Sienna suddenly laughed. “So what? You have the title of his wife. Am I not allowed a little compensation? Damian lo

Sienna showed up for the first mediation hearing too. She had taken off all her jewelry and carried nothing but a canvas tote. The moment she saw me, her eyes turned red. “Elena, we’ve been friends for so many years. Do you really want to leave me with nothing?”I placed the property list on the table. “None of it was yours to begin with.”“But Damian gave it all to me.”“Then let him buy it all again with his own money.”Damian sat across from me, his eyes fixed on me the entire time. The mediator asked, “Mr. Pierce, do you agree to the divorce?”“No.”“Is it true that you gave these assets to Ms. Moore?”He paused for several seconds. “Yes, but Elena knew about it.”I lifted my eyes to him.Damian continued, “She knew Sienna and I were close. She never objected all these years.”I gave a small laugh. “I only found out the actual amount yesterday.”“You saw her posts.”“Sienna blocked me from seeing them.”The mediator turned to Sienna. The color drained from her face.

Damian did not linger in the hallway. He went to deal with the seizure of Sienna’s belongings. At 11:00 pm, he came back and knocked on my door. “Elena, we need to talk.”I did not open the door. “Your lawyer can talk to mine.”“I’m not agreeing to a divorce.”“Then we’ll settle it in court.”There was a long silence on the other side before he said quietly, “Sienna and I never slept together.”My hand tightened around the cup for a moment. “So?”“I admit I handled the gifts badly, but I never betrayed our marriage.”“So you’re saying that as long as you never slept with her, four years of lies don’t count as betrayal?”“I owe her.”“What do you owe her?”Damian was silent for a moment. “When I was at my lowest, she was there for me.”“So was I.”In our first year of marriage, he suffered from insomnia and stayed awake all night. I sat with him until dawn. The second year, he was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer. I stayed by his side for seven days. The third year, he

The moment I finished speaking, the door behind me flew open. Damian came after me and grabbed my phone. “Who are you suing?” His eyes were locked on the screen, his expression darkening.I pulled my phone back. “Sienna Moore. Everything she received was bought with marital assets.”Sienna came rushing out after him, the smile on her face completely gone. “Elena, Damian gave me those things willingly.”“His consent doesn’t give him the right to dispose of my half of our marital property.”Damian stepped between us. “How much do you want? I’ll transfer it to you. Just leave Sienna out of this.”I looked at him. “Even now, you’re still protecting her.”“I’m trying to solve the problem.”“Your idea of solving the problem is making me be the understanding one again?”His voice grew heavier. “Do you really have to drag this into court and make everyone look bad?”“The one who should be embarrassed isn’t me.”I brushed his hand away from my phone. “Someone will be contacting you
