Eleanor was completely unaware of the storm raging inside Nicholas’s head.

As she walked towards the cab, something inside her began to loosen.

Maybe it was her anger. Or maybe it was the hope she had carried for the last few years. She felt as though a thread wrapped around her heart was finally unravelling, making her feel freer, lighter, and so much more like herself.

For a brief moment, she thought Nicholas might try to stop her.

But he didn’t. And she was actually glad. Not disappointed.

  • Fourteen Days To Say Goodbye   Chapter 26

Nicholas was fairly sure Ivan didn’t mean half the things he said.God knew the man could crack a joke at a funeral and walk away without a trace of guilt. And yet, the words he had said before whistling out of the office that morning stuck with him like gum to a shoe. No matter how hard he tried to tell himself that Ivan was a fool and that he himself was smarter and more intellectual in every possible sense, he couldn’t quite shake him off. Ivan clung to his conscience like a fucking ghost.Nicholas stared at the spreadsheet on his screen for the third time in ten minutes and still couldn’t tell what any of the numbers meant.“Ridiculous,” he muttered and pushed back from his desk. He turned around, pulled out a drawer, and returned with a pack of cigarettes he hadn’t touched in a long time.Nicholas turned the pack over in his hand. It was still sealed, the plastic gone slightly dull from the months it had spent at the back of the drawer. He had quit a year ago, when he saw Eleanor

During the entire flight, Eleanor was very much aware of the presence next to her.It was impossible not to notice the man who spoke at least a million words a minute. And oh, Lord, he talked. A lot.But Eleanor would be wrong to say he wasn’t interesting. He was charming in his own weird kind of way. He had a nice smile, the kind that popped instant dimples into his cheeks. His jawline was as sharp as a knife, and his eyes... well, they were hazel in a beautiful and curious kind of way.“So, what do you think?” Carson asked, his eyes bright, his smile stretched with excitement.Eleanor shook herself out of her thoughts. “Sorry, what did you say?”Carson laughed, taking not even an ounce of offense at her inattention. It was kind of a strange reaction. Or maybe it was completely normal, and living with the Beaumonts and Berkshires had made even the most normal reactions feel absurd to her.Either way, she wasn’t going to question it. She was simply going to roll with it.When Carson w

  • Fourteen Days To Say Goodbye   Chapter 24

Nicholas didn't sleep that night. It wasn't the divorce keeping him awake, or so he told himself. Something had come up at the company, and he'd left the house in the middle of the night. He was almost grateful for the excuse. The bed had never felt so large. Now it was dawn, and he was beyond exhausted. He leaned back in his chair, shut his eyes, and tried to steal a few minutes of rest.He didn't get five. The door swung open without a knock, and Ivan Sanders, his best friend and business partner, strolled in with a cheeky grin. He perched on the edge of the desk and lowered his voice, as if the glass walls weren't already listening. "So, is it true?"Nicholas didn't open his eyes. "Without context, that question has an unimaginable number of answers."Ivan rolled his eyes, a wasted effort, since Nicholas's were still shut. "I'm talking about your impending divorce."Nicholas's eyes opened. He had no suitable answer. He just hadn't expected his marriage to become office gossip befor

Eleanor almost jumped at the voice. She turned her head to see who had spoken, not ready for the surprise that hit her so hard her jaw almost dropped."You?"It was the same guy from earlier, the one who had apologized and flirted in a single breath.Eleanor swallowed, trying to wrap her head around the situation and failing. The guy spoke with a grin that she realized wasn't bad to look at. He was handsome, no doubt about it, the kind of handsome that reminded you of a carefree childhood, summers and beautiful sunsets."Yup," he said, his smile deepening those dimples. "But look at that. I didn't expect to bump into you again, and on the same flight, no less." He glanced at the seat number, and his grin widened. "Right next to you. If that isn't the universe trying to pull us together, I don't know what is."Eleanor rolled her eyes. "Very funny. It's just a coincidence. And you might want to double-check your seat, because I'm pretty sure I'm in the right one."The guy didn't answer.

She felt as though a thread wrapped around her heart was finally unravelling, making her feel freer, lighter, and so much more like herself. For a brief moment, she thought Nicholas might try to stop her.But he didn’t. And she was actually glad. Not disappointed.Throughout the cab ride to the airport, she kept her gaze fixed outside the window, a small smile playing on her lips. She was happy that, for the first time in her life, she had done something for herself. She had chosen herself. It had seemed difficult at first, but she had gathered the courage to walk away from everything she had once wanted so desperately.A family to belong to. A life partner to spend the rest of her life with.Sure, it upset her to realise that even after coming so close to

  • Fourteen Days To Say Goodbye   Chapter 21

Nicholas watched as Eleanor got into the cab and drove away. But he didn’t move. He couldn’t.Her words kept ringing in his ears.Find someone he could cherish? Why would she say something like that? Was that her way of telling him that he hadn’t cherished her enough? Had she been dissatisfied with something? If so, why hadn’t she talked to him about it?Or maybe she had, and he had simply been unavailable?Well, that was certainly possible. Over the last few months, his schedule had become more crowded than ever. He barely had time to breathe, let alone make time for anyone. But still. Was that reason enough for her to push for a divorce? For some reason, it bothered Nicholas a great deal. Not because she was the one asking for a divorce, but because he couldn’t think of a single reason why she would walk away like that.He was still in the middle of processing everything when his phone rang, yanking him back to reality. He was standing on the road, staring at practically nothing.Ni
