Layla POV

The phone beeped just as we reached the car. My pulse immediately jumped. I knew whose text it was without looking.

Four months of stolen glances and coded messages and I had learned the weight of his silence, and I knew how my chest tightened when he broke it.

I ignored the buzz in my satchel.

Carla was right beside me and the last thing I needed was for her to see Draven's name light up my screen. Thank Goddess, no one seemed to notice the sound.

I climbed into the back seat and sat on my hands, telling myself I'd check his text when I was alone.

Lois lasted approximately thirty seconds before she started.

"Did you see how he held you?" She grabbed Carla's arm, beaming with excitement. "Tell me you felt that."

"I felt the ceiling nearly fall on my head," Carla said dryly. The tips of her ears turned pink anyway. "That's what I felt."

"I'm telling you. Draven is completely gone for you.”

I forced myself to laugh. Anything to avoid drawing attention to my silence and how uncomfortable this conversation was making me.

"The whole pack knows it," Savanna agreed from the driver's seat. "The whole realm too. Just wait until graduation. He's probably about to make things official.”

The graduation was in two days. Lois’ words lodged like glass beneath my ribs.

I knew they were wrong. Draven wasn't secretly planning to confess undying love to Carla. Yet doubt still slithered into my mind. Not merely because of how he saved her earlier.

My sister was beautiful. She had a wolf. She was confident. Respected.

Everything a future Luna should be.

What if, eventually, Draven started believing what everyone else believed? That she was the right choice.

The thought made my stomach twist. The urge to check my phone became so unbearable that I slipped a hand into my bag, brushing my fingers against it.

Meanwhile, the girls continued talking. Laughing. Speculating about mating ceremonies that didn't exist.

I wanted nothing more than to disappear.

If only they knew what their words did to me. If only they would stop. But that was the problem. They didn't know, and they couldn't.

My greatest fear had never been the Alpha's family or even the pack finding out about us.

It was this family. My own. The only one I'd ever had.

Carla would be devastated if she learned the truth. The betrayal would destroy her and I would lose her. Not just as a sister, but as a friend.

She was the first person in this pack to make me feel at home. Wanted. Part of the Beta's household.

By the time we reached the Beta Manor, my chest felt too heavy. I climbed out of the car before anyone else.

The sun had started sinking below the trees, painting the grounds gold.

We waved goodbye as the girls drove away. Then I saw Brutus. The steward. He was waiting near the entrance. The first sign that something was wrong.

He wasn't moving or pretending to do something else. Just standing there with his hands folded, watching us come up the path. My stomach shifted.

"Are we expecting guests?" Carla murmured to me.

"Not that I know of."

"I was checking on the garden when I saw you coming," Brutus said as we reached him.

His tone was smooth. Practiced. But his eyes slid past me entirely, landing on Carla with that specific warmth he'd reserved for the real daughter of this household.

That was the second sign.

I had learned to read Brutus the way you learn to read the weather. Not because he was expressive, but because the things he didn't do told you everything. And he hadn't met my eyes once this past few minutes.

I pulled out my phone for a quick glance at the text while Carla went inside calling for mom.

The ash tree. 8:30.

That was all. No explanation or warmth. Just coordinates and a time.

That was Draven Darkwood. Even in secret, he moved like an Alpha, certain that the world would arrange itself around his decisions.

Any other evening, I would have felt the familiar thrill. Tonight I stood in the darkening garden holding his text and feeling something closer to dread.

"Layla."

I looked up. Brutus was watching me now.

"The Beta will see you immediately." His voice had dropped to something that was almost gentle, which was worse than his usual coldness. "Don't keep him waiting."

He held my gaze just long enough for me to understand that he had waited for Carla to be out of sight before he even looked at me.

My blood went cold.

When we reached the Beta's study, I could hear Mom's voice before Brutus even knocked. Her tone was low yet sharp and clipped with the urgency of someone who had been pacing for an hour and was done waiting.

I knew that voice. I had spent eleven years learning which version of her to walk into a room with and which version meant I should find somewhere else to be.

There was nowhere else to be at this moment.

Brutus stepped aside. Another glance at the steward's face and the thought struck instantly.

They know.

My hand trembled as I lifted it to knock.

“Enter.” Beta Gordon's voice was cold and authoritative.

When I walked in, he stood at the edge of his oak desk with his arms crossed. His face was closed off in a way I had never seen directed at me.

He was the one who had sat with me three days ago and told me patiently, gently, that some wolves were late bloomers. Especially females. That I shouldn't stop hoping for my wolf.

That man felt very far away now.

Mom stopped pacing the moment I entered. Her eyes found me and something moved across her face, something hot and wounded.

Layla POVTurning to walk back into the hospital, I reminded myself that George and Draven were estranged. They had been so for years. I wasn't dull enough to pretend I was not at the center of their quarrel. If George was using our reconnection to poke his former friend, that was a conversation we were going to have. Directly. Another time.If he ever brought up any silly talk about mating. For now I was going to pretend I hadn't heard him right.Me. Luna of LongClaws Pack? The single thought arrived with Carla's voice attached to it. Seven years old when I'd been standing in a half-decorated hall with my eyes and nostrils watering from the plant. I'd been waiting for Draven's text when she'd said it.You could be Luna of LongClaws one day.The others had agreed. Except for Savanna who had rolled her eyes and reminded everyone that I was wolfless.I pushed that memory aside. Such thoughts always led somewhere I didn't have the energy for. Especially not right now.Doctor Stanley

George Hunt (Third-person POV)"I was in the area," he lied instead. He'd had an early morning meeting in Shadow Vale Pack. Returning to LongClaws would've taken him just as long as driving to the edge of the Realm. So he'd come to the edge of the Realm. To see her."So this is where you work?" he asked, looking around after releasing her from the embrace. She nodded."Don't look at me like that, Layla. Your license is suspended,” he teased. “You might as well be on vacation. This is not a bad time for that coffee you promised me.""You're wrong about the vacation part." She rolled her eyes. "My boss just made that very clear. But come on. There's a cafeteria around the back."He didn't move immediately. "I was hoping we'd hang out at Devon's Grill. I saw it on the way here. Real fancy place. Much quieter.""I'm at work, George," she reminded him, her voice ringing with laughter."Alright." He fell into step beside her. "And... your mate might not like it I guess. This is a small se

Layla POVWhen I stepped into Travis's office, he didn't waste a word. He simply held out his hand without looking up. I knew exactly what he wanted.Removing my hospital badge, I placed it in his palm."So that's why they were here so early?"Travis finally lifted his head."You think Alpha Draven Darkwood of the Arctic Moon came all the way to Neutral territory just to make sure you weren't treating patients?"Right. That would've been flattering. It would've meant he was thinking about me far more than he should. The truth was...I was the one thinking about him too much. Not everything he did revolved around me. I needed to get that into my skull."He's the one who intercepted our shipment," Travis said quietly. My heart slammed against my ribs. The masking potion.Draven was the one who seize it? What did he know?I forced myself to stay very still, waiting for the Chief to volunteer more details."He only wanted answers. That's all." Travis returned his attention to the monitor

George Hunt (Third-Person POV)George had the phone pressed to his ear when Draven Darkwood emerged from the hospital.Even before Layla answered, the sight of his former best friend confirmed he was at the right place and had come at exactly the right time. The two Alphas exchanged the customary nod of acknowledgment. It was usually all they exchanged these days.Seven years had passed since their friendship had died. And time had not softened either of them.He expected Draven to continue on his way. "Are you serious?" Layla laughed warmly through the phone. "You're here? In Neutral territory?""Yup," George replied. "I'm outside your workplace."Instead of walking past, Draven changed direction and strode toward him.George tried to keep his attention on the call. "So I'll see you in a moment, right? I'll wait at reception."He lowered the phone."Alpha Draven.""Alpha George."The greeting was polite enough. But the look on Draven's face was not.He wore that same guarded look he

Layla POVI held my breath as Savanna went on."...And she overheard some things. About you. Silver berries. Do you know what they are?"Yes. They were an extremely rare silver plant found only outside the Realm. They were banned because they were poisonous to werewolves. Unlike pure silver, they didn't kill. They temporarily paralyzed the wolf."I know about them.""The former Beta had a regular supply when you were living with them."My fingers tightened around the phone."Nina… I mean, his former PA—was the only one who knew. She always placed the orders. Always contacted the supplier. She thought there was only one reason he could have been buying them.Especially because he stopped right after you left the pack."My hands began to shake. I waited for her to continue."Layla, do you understand what I'm saying?" she asked gently."Beta Gordon would not go that far." I said it to convince myself more than her. "Silver berries don't kill–""No," she interjected. "They weaken. Paraly

Layla POVI waited for the headteacher to go on.She looked at me. "Aiden will be placed on one week suspension. And mandatory counseling, which must take place here, within the school, during normal hours.""Will the same apply to Duncan?" I asked.“My son was the one who got hurt,” the woman beside me snapped. Her eyes were sharp, her voice sharper. I briefly wondered what pack she belonged to. And whether there were no schools within it for her son to attend instead of sending him to a mixed school where he could bully other children.“Duncan's face is still swollen. Your son needs help, Doctor Wallace.”She said my name with such contempt, as though it offended her to address me with the respect the title demanded."And your son needs to learn not to provoke people," I shrugged."What, so kids can't joke anymore!?""Ladies." The head teacher raised a hand. "Doctor Wallace, this matter is already settled.""But the punishment is too lenient," the woman insisted. "One week suspens
