Fragile as Breath
Dada Dash

Chapter 1

Dada Dash
The couple who had been standing at the side, calmly watching the so-called brotherly reunion, suddenly dropped their elegant composure and rushed over in a panic.

My biological mother, Catherine Lynch, reached out with trembling fingers to check if I was breathing. She took a long moment before finally letting out a shaky sigh of relief.

"He's still breathing. Call an ambulance now!"

The second I heard that, I snapped my eyes open and grabbed her wrist. "No need. It's just low blood sugar. I'll be fine."

It was my first day back in this house. The last thing I wanted was for people to think I was troublesome or high-maintenance. More than anything, I wanted them to like me.

The servants stared at me, my face covered in blood, clearly terrified. Their eyes darted nervously toward my mother for instructions.

My mother stood up and motioned for the butler and the servants to leave, then turned to Anthony Snyder, her tone gentle but measured as she said, "Liam has only just come back to the family, so he still needs time to adjust. Make sure he's well taken care of, and don't…"

Before she could finish, Anthony's eyes were already glassy. The young man, who had been indulged his whole life, looked both stubborn and aggrieved.

"I was just trying to welcome him. How was I supposed to know he'd collapse on his own? I didn't even touch him."

My mother nodded softly and patted his hand in reassurance, about to speak again when I suddenly let out a blood-streaked tear. "He told me to behave… I didn't react in time. It scared me, and I fell. I didn't mean to."

Anthony's face went deathly pale. He stared at me, his voice rising sharply. "What are you talking about?"

The pressure in his gaze hit me like a weight, and my chest tightened instantly.

My body was weak, and my mind even more so. I had always been afraid of upsetting people and being a burden. I lived carefully and cautiously, never daring to say no.

Then, on my very first day back, I had already been warned by Anthony. The anxiety pressed down on me so hard I could barely breathe.

What if I upset him again in the future? What if he started to hate me?

The more I thought about it, the worse it felt. Blood-streaked tears slid uncontrollably from the corners of my eyes.

I looked at him miserably. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have come back and gotten in the way. I'll leave right now."

Getting warned like that on day one… The days ahead probably would not be easy. I could already tell.

Perhaps some things were never meant to be forced. With a body as fragile as mine, I clearly did not belong in a family like that.

Since my luggage had not even been brought inside yet, I was already thinking about how to ask the driver to take me back to where I came from.

The commotion quickly drew the attention of the neighbors.

They gathered in small groups along the roadside, whispering to each other, occasionally shooting strange, unreadable looks in our direction.

When he saw me lying there, covered in blood, my father, Patrick Snyder, finally crouched. He forced a stiff, almost ugly smile onto his face.

"You're our biological son. Of course, you should stay. Perhaps Anthony doesn't know how to phrase things properly. He's not a bad person."

Seeing me glance timidly at Anthony, my father subtly shot him a look from the side.

Only then did Anthony reluctantly walk over. His expression was strained as he reached out a hand, as if to help me up.

However, the dissatisfaction in his eyes had not faded at all. When he grabbed my hand, his grip was too tight, like he was holding something back. The next second, he suddenly tightened his grip.

A sharp crack rang out. My arm snapped.

I crashed heavily back onto the ground. A few bills slipped out of my pocket and scattered across the floor.

Later, I learned the truth. Anthony had deliberately sent away the person watching over me and tampered with my medicine, mixing poison into it.Maybe it was because my body had always been weak and unusually sensitive that I reacted the moment I took the first sip.I had not swallowed much, and it was discovered early, and so, I survived. However, Anthony bit his lip and refused to say a single word.My father let out a quiet sigh. "For the peace of this family, we've decided to send you back to your biological parents."Anthony jerked his head up, shock written all over his face. "How…how do you know who my real parents are?"When my parents had investigated my past, they had also uncovered Anthony's true identity. He was the child of a former nanny who had once worked for the Snyder family. They finally discovered the truth from back then.…The nanny had secretly taken me away and abandoned her own child at the Snyder family's doorstep, letting him take my place. My pare

Thud.Anthony staggered backward, nearly falling over. He clutched the corner of his bleeding mouth, staring at me in disbelief.I slowly lowered my fist. Every joint ached, my fingernails digging hard into my palm as I used the pain to keep myself steady. After everything he had just said, I forced myself to stay calm and said, "Anthony, listen to me. I never wanted to take your place or steal the love meant for you. I only played small and bowed to your every whim because I thought that was the only way everyone could be happy."But I understand now. Trying to please people is the most useless thing in the world. The pity I beg for by putting myself down only makes people like you push further and go even worse."I also need to say this. You framed me for stealing money, spread rumors that I was sick, cut my swim trunks to humiliate me, and even caused me to fall into the pool and nearly drown."In the end, my voice broke, and I could not hold it together anymore. Not a single

For a moment, the guests looked at each other in confusion. Anthony and I were saying completely different things. He had video evidence. I had tears that felt painfully real. No one knew who to believe."I know exactly what happened."Yessenia, who had been missing for hours, slowly emerged from the small grove. Her long hair was a mess, like a bird's nest. Her face was smudged with dirt, and the expensive designer gown she wore had a large tear in it.The moment Anthony saw her, it was like he had found a lifeline. His eyes lit up as he rushed over. "Sis, where have you been? They're all ganging up on me. Speak up for me!"However, Yessenia gently brushed his hand aside. Her expression was complicated as she looked at me, something heavy in her eyes."I saw everything."Anthony froze for a split second, then quickly adjusted his expression, looking aggrieved."Sis, what did you see? I didn't hurt Liam, right?"Thinking about how biased she had always been toward him and how

The guests who had been chatting in the main hall were all gathered in the garden. The abandoned wooden shed had been completely swallowed by flames, reduced to nothing but charred debris. My father held onto my mother, who was crying uncontrollably. His hand gripped the priceless diamond cufflink tightly as his voice trembled."Liam may have…"He could not finish the sentence. At that moment, Anthony came stumbling over and threw himself into our mother's arms, wailing."How did this happen? I'm too late!"His hands shook as he pulled out his phone. "Mom, Dad, this is the apology video Liam just sent me. He said it was all his fault…"My whole body ached as I forced myself to crawl out from the woods. When people saw me, it was like they had seen a ghost come back to life. Some screamed. Others ran. However, I did not care about their terrified reactions. I dragged myself straight toward Anthony. My fingernails had torn, blood seeping out as I grabbed his ankle, my voice br

However, she recovered almost instantly, turning to the cameras with calm confidence."These are just rumors. My two sons get along very well."This weekend, we'll be hosting a welcome party for Liam. Everyone is welcome to attend."…After the reporters were dismissed, my mother sat by my bed and gently stroked my hair."Anthony just acted on impulse. You'll forgive him, right? We're a family. Our family should stay close. That’s what being Mom's good boy is all about."That thin, fragile bit of motherly love almost made me cry. I wanted to listen to her forever. I wanted to be her good son.The complaints I had been about to say were swallowed back down.Feeling her gentle touch, I nodded obediently.'Don't worry, Mom. I'll get along with my brother.' I promised myself. The welcome party came quickly.Dressed in a custom suit, I actually looked like I belonged. In front of all the guests and reporters, my mother personally fastened a pair of incredibly valuable diamond cu

Even if I tried to explain, she would not have believed me. She probably would have hated me even more, so in the end, I gave up and decided to just wash them.I turned on the faucet, my face tight with suppressed grievance."Ah!"Anthony suddenly let out a sharp scream, clutching his eyes.Seeing his face go pale, I dropped the clothes and rushed forward, wanting to check on him. However, Yessenia immediately stepped in front of him, glaring at me with full suspicion."Stay away from him!"I blinked, frozen in place, too scared to move. Our parents rushed over at the noise. When they saw the red rash spreading all over my body, they were visibly stunned. The air turned heavy in an instant. I was just about to explain when Anthony spoke first, his voice full of open contempt."Liam, this kind of thing… Don't you think you should explain it?" He paused on purpose, his eyes slowly scanning my miserable state, the corner of his lips lifting slightly."You're not even that old,
