Chapter 4

Author: Pinehart
Antonio walked up to me and patted my cheek.

"Not so tough now, are you? Where's all that fight from earlier, huh?"

I spat a mouthful of blood onto his face. "If you've got the guts, just kill me."

Antonio wiped his face and furiously shouted, "Fine! If death is what you want, death is what you'll get!"

But instead of making a move, he pulled out his phone and opened a live stream.

"Guys, check this out. Today we're catching a criminal live!" He shoved the camera in my face, his voice dripping with exaggeration.

"This scumbag posed as a security guard to sneak into my aunt's house, but he's actually a mobster. He just beat up several of my guys!"

The viewer count in the live stream skyrocketed. Netizens, unaware of the truth, flooded the comments section with vicious insults.

"This guy deserves to be shot!"

"He totally looks like a criminal. Just look at those mean eyes."

"Good job, streamer! Justice always wins!"

Antonio soaked in the comments, his ego swelling with every word.

He pointed at the scar on the back of my hand and said to the camera, "See this scar? This is proof he's in the mafia. This is the mark of a criminal!"

I clenched my teeth. The cold wind sneaked in through my collar, making me shiver uncontrollably.

Yet I didn't utter a single word. Instead, I just kept my eyes locked on Antonio.

"What are you staring at?" Antonio pulled out a folding knife from his pocket and waved it around. The blade glinted harshly against the snow.

"Since this scar is proof of your crimes, how about I help you get rid of it?" he asked, grinning sinisterly. "Long ago, a warrior had poison scraped from his bones. Today, I'll scrape the wickedness from yours."

"Antonio, isn't this against the law?" Bianca asked hesitantly from the sidelines.

"Of course not! In fact, I'm being a good Samaritan." Antonio shot her a glare. "Bianca, you're just too soft-hearted. This guy played with your feelings and tried to harm your whole family, yet you still feel sorry for him?"

Bianca looked at me, then at the barrage of comments cheering Antonio on. Her gaze slowly turned cold.

"You're right, Antonio. People like him don't deserve sympathy."

Antonio grinned triumphantly. "That's more like it. Come on, light this for me. The blade needs disinfecting. Wouldn't want him dying from an infection. That'd ruin the fun."

He pulled a lighter from his pocket and handed it to Bianca.

I watched the woman who once promised to love me forever, who once said my scar was a mark of honor, now take the lighter with shaking hands. She then flicked it on and held the flame beneath the blade.

The blue flame licked at the knife's edge, and with it, the last trace of my feelings for her burned away.

"Enzo, don't hate me for this. You're the one who lied to me first," Bianca murmured, unable to meet my eyes.

Antonio waved the heated blade in front of my face. "This might sting a little, so just bear with it."

He grabbed my bound left hand and positioned the tip of the knife against the scar. "Admit that you're in the mafia!"

I looked up at the swirling snowflakes falling from the sky and screamed at the top of my lungs, "I'm Enzo Moretti, former special forces captain in the peacekeeping force. To hell with the mafia!"

"Still running your mouth, huh?" Antonio snapped furiously.

The blade sank into my skin, and blood immediately gushed out.

Right at that very moment, a thunderous crash erupted as the compound's iron gate was sent flying by an immense force, making it slam heavily onto the snow-covered ground.

Several army-green off-road vehicles burst through like enraged beasts, their blinding high beams flooding the entire yard with light as bright as day.

Before the vehicles had even fully stopped, doors were flung open. A squad of heavily armed men in camouflage tactical gear leaped out. They moved in perfect unison, bristling with deadly intent.

At the front stood a powerfully built man with a rugged, commanding face. He spotted me right away, tied to the tree with my hands covered in blood. In that instant, his eyes reddened.

A roar ripped from deep within his throat. "How dare you lay hands on Capitano Moretti?"

I picked up a 50-pound bag of flour and a bottle of cooking oil, then walked over to where Mr. Romano was.Bianca instinctively moved to shield him, her whole body trembling like a leaf. She thought I was there to kick them while they were down, to make them pay for every bit of humiliation from years ago with interest. But I simply set the things steadily on the ground without looking at her."I'm just handing these out—one per family, like the list says."With that, I turned and walked away.I didn't curse, mock, or even spare them a single glance. And yet, that indifference cut deeper than any slap ever could.Behind me, Mr. Romano let out a muffled sob, followed by a sharp crack. He had slapped himself hard across the face."Heavens forgive me. I've brought this on myself."I walked over to the truck, where a woman in a white down jacket was checking the list. Silvia Leone was my fiancee and also a doctor.Back then, she was the one who had healed my eyes and, in the proce

Bianca's husband was pathologically controlling and treated her like a plaything. When he was in a good mood, he'd give her some money. But when he wasn't, he'd beat her with a belt.I met Bianca on an afternoon in late autumn. I had just left the office and was heading to get my car.A black Land Rover was parked by the roadside, one door left ajar. Harsh voices spilled out, their argument grating on the ears.Bianca was wearing sunglasses and an Alexander McQueen coat that looked quite expensive. But she was curled up in the passenger seat, trembling violently. The sunglasses couldn't hide the bruise on her cheekbone, and her lip was split too.The moment she saw me, she pulled off her sunglasses. Her eyes first showed surprise, then a desperate plea for help flooded into them. She leaned forward, trying to get out of the car and call out to me. But a thick, powerful hand grabbed her by the hair."What are you looking at? You think that punk's yours to gawk at?"Her husband h

I pointed toward the door. "This isn't just a breakup, but rather a complete severing of all ties."Bianca froze, tears still streaming down her face. It was as if, for the first time, she realized that the man who had once catered to her every whim could be this resolute."Take your soup and leave." I pressed the call button by the bed.Two nurses rushed in and, despite her wailing and protests, escorted Bianca out.I looked at the thermos on the nightstand. It was the first time she had ever cooked for me. Unfortunately, it was too late.I picked up the thermos and dropped it into the trash can without even opening the lid. With that single thud, three years of our love came crashing down.…Antonio's verdict came down quickly.Given the heinous nature of his crimes—illegal detention, intentional injury, and the fact that the victim was a decorated veteran—the case had caused a severe negative social impact. With the charges combined, he was sentenced to eight years in pris

The police chief's expression instantly turned grim. He walked over to Antonio and pulled out a pair of handcuffs."Mr. Antonio Esposito, you are under arrest for illegal detention, intentional injury, disturbing public order, and insulting a military veteran. You're coming with us!"Antonio completely broke down, sobbing and clutching Bianca's pant leg."Bianca, Aunt Daniela, save me! I don't want to go to prison!"Bianca could barely save herself, let alone worry about him.The officers wasted no time, shoving Antonio and the thugs into the police vehicle without ceremony. Before leaving, the police chief saluted me. "Capitano Moretti, you have suffered an injustice here. I promise you, we will uphold the law to the fullest."I was helped into the off-road vehicle. Giovanni was going to take me to the nearest military hospital.Just as the door was about to close, Bianca suddenly rushed over. Her hair was disheveled, and her face was streaked with tears. Antonio's hand trembled, and the knife dropped onto the snow. He was utterly intimidated by the sheer magnitude of the situation that had just erupted."Wh-who are you people?" he stammered, his legs beginning to shake uncontrollably.Giovanni Gallo didn't even acknowledge him. In just a few strides, he closed the distance and drove his boot into Antonio's chest.Antonio went flying ten feet through the air and slammed heavily into the wall. He crumpled to the ground like a heap of mud, coughing up a gush of blood. The other thugs tried to run, but Giovanni's men had them pinned to the ground in an instant."Don't move! Face down! Stay still!"In the blink of an eye, the same thugs who had been strutting around moments ago were now face-down in the snow. Their hands were cuffed behind their backs, rendering them completely immobilized.Bianca and her parents huddled together in a trembling heap, too terrified to even scream.Giovanni's hands shook as he pulled out his combat kn
