Chapter 1

When I didn't respond, Duncan Foley took it as his cue to make matters worse.

"Jenny, a man who wants to marry up but won't even clean up his act is absolutely vile. It's not too late to realize just how disgusting a guy like this really is. Dump him before he gets his filth on you!"

Glancing at the public security administrative penalty notice, I calmly said, "My name isn't exactly rare. A ton of people have the same name. How are you so sure it's me?"

Duncan's expression stiffened. Baring his teeth, he uttered, "It's true that other people might also have the name Nicholas Blackwell, but are you also going to say that the guy my buddy arrested has the same face as you?"

I let out a snort. "If you insist your friend recognizes me, then fine. Call him right now. Make that a video call. We can ask him directly."

My firm stance threw Duncan off for a moment.

He immediately put on a wounded act before turning to Jennifer Hayes' parents. "Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, what, you expect a criminal to be clean? I'm just worried Jenny might catch some nasty disease from him! I may be blunt, but everything I say is for Jenny's sake!"

At that point, Jennifer turned to me, suspicion evident in her eyes.

My heart sank. I quickly grabbed her hand. "Jenny, we've been together for a long time now. Do you really not know what kind of person I am?"

Her gaze wavered, like she was hesitating.

She cast Duncan a brief look, then said in a low voice, "Duncan, you can't joke about matters like this. If you've falsely accused Nick of something he didn't do, then you have to sincerely apologize to him."

After a pause, she added, "Nick, I want to believe you, but… Duncan isn't the kind of person who'd intentionally make false accusations. If you really did it, you should come clean now, and I'll let it go."

I froze, thinking I must've misheard.

As soon as she finished speaking, her parents' expressions turned ugly. "Jenny, what are you saying? If what Duncan says about him is true, there's no way we'll allow you to be with someone like that.

"The evidence is right here. As far as we can tell, this punk is just being obstinate. It's impossible for this to be nothing but a coincidence."

From the very start, Jennifer's parents had made it clear that they didn't like me.

They'd kept making subtle digs at me for being from a small town.

They'd said we weren't a good match status-wise and questioned what kind of spell I'd put on Jennifer for her to not only insist on dating me but also bring me to their home on New Year's Day without telling them first.

It was true that my parents were farmers their whole lives, and they had to scrape together every penny to send me to college.

After graduating, I landed a stable job. I started at the bottom and worked my way up one step at a time to where I was at that point.

The only reason I'd always told Jennifer I was just a low-level civil servant was to prevent her from feeling any pressure over my current status.

I'd actually planned to come clean today and even propose while I was at it. I never expected her parents to act like this toward me.

My body stiffened briefly, and my lips twitched a little as I said, "Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, it's true that my family isn't well off, but what does money have to do with character? You can look down on me all you want, but please don't insult my parents."

Once I called them out, they finally held their tongues.

I was just about to sit down again when Duncan splashed a glass of red wine all over me. "Nicholas, Jenny already gave you a chance to come clean, but it seems like you're just too proud to own up to it."

I was taken aback the moment I glanced at the report. The victims were Jennifer's family. Her parents had been brutally murdered in their home, their deaths horrific. Jennifer herself, however, had vanished without a trace. The preliminary findings suggested that she could be a major suspect in the murders, but the possibility that she'd been abducted by the real killer couldn't be ruled out.Due to the particularly heinous nature of the crime, a special task force was formed at once, and I personally took charge of the investigation. After analyzing the situation, I concluded this was most likely a case of revenge killing. Jennifer's parents had each been stabbed dozens of times. The killer's intent to vent rage was unmistakable. Moreover, no cash or valuables were missing from the house, effectively ruling out robbery.Just as we were intensifying the investigation, a breaking news alert suddenly interrupted the TV broadcast.A large crowd of reporters and onlookers had surrou

Once the truth came out, the internet exploded with outrage. Those who'd blindly insulted me vanished overnight, and people wasted no time turning their fire on Duncan and unearthing all his past misdeeds.Apparently, he'd already been arrested for his involvement in prostitution before. However, not only did he fail to learn his lesson, but this time he even used his own public security administrative penalty notice to frame me.Public opinion flipped in an instant, much to the delight of many. Some even started spreading the word about me being the newly appointed chief commissioner, known for integrity and diligence. Support poured in from the public. That day, I planned to take a quick trip home to visit my parents after work.Just as I stepped out of the office building, a familiar figure caught my eye, trembling in the snow outside. It was Jennifer. Her eyes lit up when she saw me.She ran toward me, forcing a smile. "Nicholas, you're finally off work! I came looking for yo

Duncan was temporarily detained for multiple violations of the law. As for Jennifer, since she hadn't directly planned or carried out any of the harm, she was released after being sternly reprimanded by the police. The first thing she did after leaving the police station was rush straight to the hospital. At that moment, I was lying in a hospital bed. Luckily, my injuries weren't too severe. I simply felt somewhat weak.As soon as Jennifer entered the room and saw me, she immediately adopted a nervous, guilty expression. She hurried over to my bedside, her eyes red. "Nicholas, I'm sorry… I was an idiot for falling for that bastard's lies. I should've trusted you unconditionally from the start. I never meant to treat you that way. Please don't be mad at me, okay?"When I heard that, I smiled, but it was a smile utterly devoid of warmth. "Ms. Hayes, since you've been released, that means Captain Carter's investigation found nothing against you, and there's no plan to pursue any char

Captain Carter snapped, "I even had dinner with him on that day! He couldn't possibly have been at any anti-prostitution raid!"Jennifer's face turned even paler. She hurriedly handed over the photos.Captain Carter took them and examined them closely, his frown deepening. "Alright then. I'll call in forensic analysts right now. If these photos are real, I will act impartially!"But if someone deliberately fabricated evidence to maliciously slander Commissioner Blackwell, then they'd better be ready to face severe punishment."Saying this, he reached for his phone. Duncan, scared out of his wits, scrambled forward, practically crawling on the ground. He grabbed Captain Carter's leg, sobbing uncontrollably. "P-please don't, Captain Carter! I confess! The photos… I hired someone to edit them. I just couldn't stand Nicholas and wanted to prank him a little. I swear I didn't mean any real harm!""Prank?"Captain Carter kicked him away and pointed at my battered body, his voice risin

Duncan flinched at the sight of the police, his hand shaking.Forcing an awkward smile, he stammered, "C-Captain Carter, he's just a shameless john. I was only trying to teach him a lesson he'll remember."Captain Carter was on the verge of losing it, but he held it together and went around Duncan. He then carefully lowered me from the tree. My legs were so numb from the cold that I staggered the moment my feet touched the ground.Captain Carter quickly caught me, shrugged off his coat, and wrapped it tightly around me.When he saw the injuries on my face and the gashes across my body, his eyes reddened. In a shaky voice, he said, "Commissioner Blackwell, I'm terribly sorry… I was dealing with a family matter and only just saw all your missed calls."The moment the crowd heard him call me "Commissioner Blackwell", those who'd been jeering seconds ago fell dead silent.Duncan's face lost all color, and he froze stiff in place."Captain Carter, what did you just call him? Are you

The pain brought me back to my senses. Only then did I realize I was hanging from a tree.My feet were off the ground, and the rope was digging deep into my flesh. Duncan was standing in front of me with his phone raised, the camera pointed straight at my face. The live stream viewer count shot up as comments came in like a flood."What the heck is happening?""What do they think they're doing when the new year has just kicked off?""What did this guy even do? Why is he hanging from a tree? Is this some kind of stunt?""Explain already!"Seeing the questions roll in only got Duncan more hyped. He held up the public security administrative penalty notice and the photos for the camera. The tone of the comments shifted instantly. "Trash who can't keep it in his pants deserves worse than being put on display for public shaming.""I support the streamer. People like this deserve to be exposed and socially ruined.""This is so satisfying. Well done!""Scum like this don't deserve
