Chapter 4

Penulis: Twenty Seven
The doctors and nurses drawn by the commotion couldn't help but whisper among themselves.

"I always thought Dr. Goodwin was a gentle and decent man, but who knew he could be so vicious in private. Could he have violent tendencies?"

"As the saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover. Otherwise, how do you think he became the deputy director at such a young age?"

"You don't think he'd actually kill a patient over personal grudges, right?"

Pierre's family got all worked up again. A few burly men shifted restlessly, looking like they were ready to come at me again.

But the moment their hands touched me, over a dozen security guards stepped in to stop them. In the end, they could only point at me and curse furiously.

Mr. Monroe also looked at me in surprise.

A flicker of smug satisfaction crossed Megan's eyes when she saw this. She seized the opportunity to press me again.

"Donovan, with both witnesses and evidence right here in front of us, what do you have left to say for yourself?"

Instead of panicking, I remained utterly calm.

"It's just a video taken out of context, so it can hardly be used as evidence."

Sheila gritted her teeth and shot back vehemently, "Dr. Goodwin, do you have any proof that this video is taken out of context?"

"Then do you have any evidence that I swapped Pierre's medication? When and where did I supposedly do it?" I countered.

As if she had anticipated my question, Sheila answered with apparent ease, as though she had truly witnessed it herself.

"You did it this morning before the surgery. In the dressing room, you injected an unknown substance into Pierre's IV vial."

"I personally injected it into the vial?"

"That's right!"

At this answer, I exchanged a glance with Mr. Monroe. Immediately afterward, he erupted in anger.

He pointed at Sheila and demanded loudly, "Which department are you from?"

Confronted with Mr. Monroe's question, Sheila felt the forced composure on her face crack piece by piece.

"Mr. Monroe, I'm an operating room nurse."

"Since you're an operating room nurse, why are you helping outsiders slander one of our doctors? Don't you know that those who betray their own never come to a good end?"

Sheila's face paled in shock as she rushed to defend herself. "Mr. Monroe, I didn't. Everything I said is true! You can't just push a powerless nurse like me forward to take the blame just because Dr. Goodwin is the deputy director!"

Megan shot me a venomous glare before turning to fan the flames, trying to stir up the emotions of those watching.

"Mr. Monroe, Ms. Bell is right. You can't threaten an innocent young woman just to protect Donovan."

"Are patients' lives worth nothing in the eyes of you doctors?"

"I'm calling the police right now. I refuse to believe there's nowhere for ordinary people like us to seek justice."

I fired back without backing down, "Go ahead and call the police. I'd also like to ask them how someone with a fractured finger on their right hand could inject medication into a vial or perform surgery on a patient."

As I slowly extended my heavily bandaged right hand, both Megan and Sheila instantly paled. But there was more than left Megan in disbelief.

The next moment, the operating room doors swung open, and a doctor in scrubs stepped out.

When he spotted Mr. Monroe, his face lit up with happiness.

"Mr. Monroe, the surgery was a complete success. Once the anesthesia wears off, we can transfer the patient to a general ward."

Megan, however, screamed sharply, "Dad, who did you operate on?"

I was about to step inside when Dr. Reese's furious roar stopped me."Stay right there, or I'll kill this damned hag!"My heart lurched, and I dared not take another step. I forced myself to stay calm as I tried to reason with him."Dr. Reese, we're family. Whatever it is, we can talk it out. There's no need to do this."Dr. Reese scoffed and said, "Family? I'm not family with this wretched woman."Just then, Mom could no longer contain herself and broke down sobbing. "Donovan, please don't blame me. I had no choice. Arnold threatened me—he said if I didn't do it, he wouldn't let Megan go. He's the one who gave Megan all those injuries!"I became even more confused after hearing that."Not let Megan go? What does that mean? Isn't Megan his daughter?"The moment my words fell, Dr. Reese snapped angrily, "That little bitch isn't my daughter—she's the bastard child this old whore had with another man. Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."The mother cheats, and the dau

Under the pressure of public opinion, Mr. Monroe had no choice but to revoke my position as deputy director and place me on indefinite suspension.Meanwhile, Megan's boss, Robby Holt, paid her a personal visit at home with a bunch of health supplements while she was recovering."I never would've guessed Donovan, who always seemed so refined, could be an abuser. But then again, maybe it's not so surprising he would do something like this."Megan immediately caught the hidden implication, her eyes lighting up sharply."Robby, what do you mean by that?""Oh, you didn't know? Before marrying you, Donovan once caused a patient's death. Back then, he didn't want to pay up, and it also happened to be a critical time for his promotion to attending physician."So, he secretly hired a bunch of thugs to threaten the patient's family, and only then was he able to bury the whole thing."If domestic violence were just a moral issue, then causing a patient's death—once proven—would be enough t

In this life, I finally had the chance to ask Megan properly.Megan pressed her lips tightly together, saying nothing the entire time.I let out a self-deprecating smile and said, "Don't worry, I'm not wearing a wire. I just genuinely want to know the reason. Megan, didn't I treat you well?"Though I might not have been the perfect husband, and I occasionally neglected her due to work, I always did my best to treat her well.I remembered every anniversary that mattered to her and made sure to give carefully chosen gifts on time. Whenever I had the chance, I would cook her favorite food. I also treated her parents as if they were my own.So, why?If it was because she didn't love me, she could have just asked for a divorce. Why did she have to go so far as to destroy me?I could clearly see the pain, struggle, and confusion in Megan's eyes. But soon, those emotions vanished completely."Donovan, I never loved you at all."I nodded, not at all surprised by the answer.Back then

Mom pointed at Maya and shouted, "You're talking nonsense! Don't you know perfectly well how Donovan has treated Megan, Dr. Reese, and you? What one does in the dark always comes to light. One day, karma will catch up to you for all this!"At Mom's accusation, an unreadable emotion flickered in Maya's eyes. But in the end, she retorted with self-righteous certainty, "These reports clearly document Donovan's wrongdoing."You're right—what one does in the dark always comes to light. So, Donovan will indeed face retribution for committing such heartless acts."Mom flipped through the stack of injury assessment reports, still refusing to believe Maya's claims."These reports are fake. With your family's influence, obtaining such medical records would be all too easy. So, they can't be treated as evidence!"Just as the two of them were locked in a stalemate, the head of the criminal investigation team, Scott Floyd, pushed the door open and entered. His gaze was probing and full of sus

"Isn't Dr. Goodwin Megan's husband? How could she use such an underhanded method to frame him?""Guess the saying is true—hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.""Sheila is no saint either. She actually tried to set up a doctor from her own hospital!""Am I the only one curious why Megan and Sheila were so certain that the patient had died?"After gathering all the details, the police decided to take both Megan and Sheila to the station for further investigation.Megan's expression was grim, but she showed no sign of panic at being exposed. As she passed by me, she suddenly leaned close to my ear and whispered in a voice only the two of us could hear, "Donovan, don't think you've won just yet. The real show is still to come."My heart sank sharply.Just then, my mother-in-law, Maya Caldwell, suddenly rushed out from the crowd. Then, pointing at me, she shouted to the police, "Officers, Megan had her reasons for doing this!"Donovan is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing. H

Dr. Reese wasn't surprised to see Megan in the slightest."Megan, I knew you'd be here. Don't worry, I performed Pierre's surgery myself. He's out of danger now."But instead of feeling relieved, Megan felt her face drained of color entirely."Dad, why were you the one operating on Pierre? Wasn't Donovan his attending physician? And why didn't you tell me Donovan injured his hand?""Didn't he say he'd tell you himself? Unless—"At this point, Dr. Reese seemed to finally realize something and immediately turned to look at me.I simply gave him an innocent smile. "Dr. Reese, I just didn't want Megan to worry."Yesterday, when Dr. Reese was about to tell Megan about my injured hand and the change of surgeon for Pierre, I stopped him just in time and told him I'd personally explain everything to Megan.Dr. Reese knew how well I treated Megan and that I never hid things from her, so he easily believed what I said.To be honest, I didn't have concrete proof that Dr. Reese was involv
