Chapter 3

Penulis: Twenty Seven
Hiding behind the security guard, I glared at Megan and shouted, "I didn't kill Pierre! Megan, you'd better have proof for what you're saying!"

Megan showed no trace of panic. Instead, she put on an expression of deep distress.

"Donovan, I may be your wife, but I am also a person with a conscience. I cannot turn a blind eye to your crimes, so don't blame me for doing this.

"Before justice and the law, I must uphold righteousness to bring justice for the deceased, even if it means exposing my own husband!"

Just then, Mr. Monroe, having received word, hurried over.

"I am Jamaal Monroe, the hospital director. What exactly is going on here? If you are deliberately causing trouble outside the operating room, I will have to call the police."

Megan spoke up before I could even get a word in. "Mr. Monroe, you came just in time. Donovan abused his position to intentionally cause a patient's death during surgery, so this hospital owes the family an explanation."

Mr. Monroe gave Megan a strange look. "If I recall correctly, you are Dr. Reese's daughter and Dr. Goodwin's wife, aren't you?"

Megan's expression stiffened for a moment.

"Yes, I am Donovan's wife. But that doesn't mean I can ignore my own conscience. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully for the rest of my life."

Watching Megan standing there so self-righteously, I felt a sharp ache deep in my heart.

After she became my wife, I treasured her deeply and rarely said no to anything she wanted. Mom treated her as if she were her own daughter, too. Yet, in the end, all we got in return was a tragic fate.

Mr. Monroe looked puzzled by Megan's accusations.

"But Dr. Goodwin hasn't been in the operating room for days, and none of his surgeries have ever failed before."

"Didn't he just operate on Pierre today?" Megan immediately retorted sharply.

It was then that I spoke up calmly. "I didn't perform Pierre's surgery. In fact, I spent the entire day today in Mr. Monroe's office."

Mr. Monroe nodded, confirming that what I said was true.

As soon as the words were spoken, everyone fell silent.

Megan clearly hadn't expected this outcome and stood frozen in place for a long moment.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, she shouted at me, "I've got it! You must've finished the surgery early, then rushed straight to Mr. Monroe's office so he could unknowingly provide you with a false alibi."

I had to admit, I was almost impressed by just how wild Megan's imagination really was.

Just then, a young nurse pushed through the crowd and pointed at me.

"I can prove that Dr. Goodwin was the one who killed Pierre," she shouted indignantly.

I would recognize that pretty but venomous face anywhere, even if she were reduced to ashes.

In my previous life, Sheila stood there with that innocent face of hers and twisted the truth in front of the media and police.

But in this life, I didn't even set foot in the operating room, so what made her think she could still come after me with these accusations?

Suppressing the hatred in my heart, I looked at her coldly and said, "Ms. Bell, I've never wronged you, so why are you trying to frame me?"

Sheila's eyes flashed with an unreadable emotion as she replied emphatically, "Dr. Goodwin, it's true we have no personal grudge, but I can't ignore what I swore to uphold as a nurse.

"I saw with my own eyes that you switched Pierre's medication, and that's what killed him on the operating table. As for the reason… You suspected Pierre of seducing your wife, so you took revenge!"

With that, she played the very video that had sealed my fate in my previous life.

In the footage, I was in a heated argument with Pierre, who was wearing a hospital gown. Both of our faces were flushed with anger.

At the end of the video, the line "Why aren't you dead yet?" echoed hollowly down the empty corridor.

I was about to step inside when Dr. Reese's furious roar stopped me."Stay right there, or I'll kill this damned hag!"My heart lurched, and I dared not take another step. I forced myself to stay calm as I tried to reason with him."Dr. Reese, we're family. Whatever it is, we can talk it out. There's no need to do this."Dr. Reese scoffed and said, "Family? I'm not family with this wretched woman."Just then, Mom could no longer contain herself and broke down sobbing. "Donovan, please don't blame me. I had no choice. Arnold threatened me—he said if I didn't do it, he wouldn't let Megan go. He's the one who gave Megan all those injuries!"I became even more confused after hearing that."Not let Megan go? What does that mean? Isn't Megan his daughter?"The moment my words fell, Dr. Reese snapped angrily, "That little bitch isn't my daughter—she's the bastard child this old whore had with another man. Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."The mother cheats, and the dau

Under the pressure of public opinion, Mr. Monroe had no choice but to revoke my position as deputy director and place me on indefinite suspension.Meanwhile, Megan's boss, Robby Holt, paid her a personal visit at home with a bunch of health supplements while she was recovering."I never would've guessed Donovan, who always seemed so refined, could be an abuser. But then again, maybe it's not so surprising he would do something like this."Megan immediately caught the hidden implication, her eyes lighting up sharply."Robby, what do you mean by that?""Oh, you didn't know? Before marrying you, Donovan once caused a patient's death. Back then, he didn't want to pay up, and it also happened to be a critical time for his promotion to attending physician."So, he secretly hired a bunch of thugs to threaten the patient's family, and only then was he able to bury the whole thing."If domestic violence were just a moral issue, then causing a patient's death—once proven—would be enough t

In this life, I finally had the chance to ask Megan properly.Megan pressed her lips tightly together, saying nothing the entire time.I let out a self-deprecating smile and said, "Don't worry, I'm not wearing a wire. I just genuinely want to know the reason. Megan, didn't I treat you well?"Though I might not have been the perfect husband, and I occasionally neglected her due to work, I always did my best to treat her well.I remembered every anniversary that mattered to her and made sure to give carefully chosen gifts on time. Whenever I had the chance, I would cook her favorite food. I also treated her parents as if they were my own.So, why?If it was because she didn't love me, she could have just asked for a divorce. Why did she have to go so far as to destroy me?I could clearly see the pain, struggle, and confusion in Megan's eyes. But soon, those emotions vanished completely."Donovan, I never loved you at all."I nodded, not at all surprised by the answer.Back then

Mom pointed at Maya and shouted, "You're talking nonsense! Don't you know perfectly well how Donovan has treated Megan, Dr. Reese, and you? What one does in the dark always comes to light. One day, karma will catch up to you for all this!"At Mom's accusation, an unreadable emotion flickered in Maya's eyes. But in the end, she retorted with self-righteous certainty, "These reports clearly document Donovan's wrongdoing."You're right—what one does in the dark always comes to light. So, Donovan will indeed face retribution for committing such heartless acts."Mom flipped through the stack of injury assessment reports, still refusing to believe Maya's claims."These reports are fake. With your family's influence, obtaining such medical records would be all too easy. So, they can't be treated as evidence!"Just as the two of them were locked in a stalemate, the head of the criminal investigation team, Scott Floyd, pushed the door open and entered. His gaze was probing and full of sus

"Isn't Dr. Goodwin Megan's husband? How could she use such an underhanded method to frame him?""Guess the saying is true—hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.""Sheila is no saint either. She actually tried to set up a doctor from her own hospital!""Am I the only one curious why Megan and Sheila were so certain that the patient had died?"After gathering all the details, the police decided to take both Megan and Sheila to the station for further investigation.Megan's expression was grim, but she showed no sign of panic at being exposed. As she passed by me, she suddenly leaned close to my ear and whispered in a voice only the two of us could hear, "Donovan, don't think you've won just yet. The real show is still to come."My heart sank sharply.Just then, my mother-in-law, Maya Caldwell, suddenly rushed out from the crowd. Then, pointing at me, she shouted to the police, "Officers, Megan had her reasons for doing this!"Donovan is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing. H

Dr. Reese wasn't surprised to see Megan in the slightest."Megan, I knew you'd be here. Don't worry, I performed Pierre's surgery myself. He's out of danger now."But instead of feeling relieved, Megan felt her face drained of color entirely."Dad, why were you the one operating on Pierre? Wasn't Donovan his attending physician? And why didn't you tell me Donovan injured his hand?""Didn't he say he'd tell you himself? Unless—"At this point, Dr. Reese seemed to finally realize something and immediately turned to look at me.I simply gave him an innocent smile. "Dr. Reese, I just didn't want Megan to worry."Yesterday, when Dr. Reese was about to tell Megan about my injured hand and the change of surgeon for Pierre, I stopped him just in time and told him I'd personally explain everything to Megan.Dr. Reese knew how well I treated Megan and that I never hid things from her, so he easily believed what I said.To be honest, I didn't have concrete proof that Dr. Reese was involv
