Chapter 4

Author: Proud Onion
I couldn't sleep all night.

I put all the evidence I had into a USB stick. I had secretly recorded three audio recordings of my colleagues talking. I screenshotted more than 40 images from the CCTV footage of my colleagues looking at the pink teddy bear next to me and arranged them chronologically.

Then, I went through the company's website, looking up old news about their events. I then found a department group photo from three years ago when we just moved into the new office building.

In the photo, a female employee named Maxine Thayer had been sitting near my current work desk. She was hugging that teddy bear.

When I took a closer look, I saw that the teddy bear's neck was clean with no stitches. But the teddy bear in the office had a ring of crooked, hand-stitched thread running around its neck. The stitches were quick and tightly packed, suggesting that whoever did it had been in a great hurry.

I checked the company database next and saw that Maxine's name had been erased from the records a long time ago.

Another piece of evidence that I included in the USB stick was a screenshot of the transfer record of the 50 thousand dollars Joel gave me last night, along with the words "Work from your desk" attached to the record.

At precisely 3:00 am that night, I brought all my evidence to the police station.

The officer on duty was Officer Sarah Quinn. She looked to be in her 30s. When she heard my account, her brow furrowed deeper and deeper. She also cataloged and archived all the evidence I brought.

Half an hour later, she came out of her office and said, "Ms. Summers, the information you provided is important, but I'm afraid that we can't classify it as a criminal case just yet.

"However, we will work with the fire department and local police to conduct an on-site investigation under the guise of checking for the source of the odor and potential safety hazards.

"If anything is confirmed to be abnormal at the scene, then we will take control of the situation at once."

At 9:00 am the next day, the fire department and local police officers arrived at Starshade Creatives. All of the company's senior executives were shaken, including the CEO, Seth Foster, Lola, Nathan, and Joel.

When Joel saw me entering the office behind Officer Quinn, the polite smile on his face froze at once. His face turned purple at first before turning pale. His legs turned to jelly, and he nearly crashed to the floor.

I didn't look at him and headed straight toward my desk. I then picked up the eight-foot teddy bear next to me.

The moment I picked it up, I smelled that strange, lingering odor clearly for the first time. It was the stench of decay mixed with a faint disinfectant smell. The smell was slowly seeping from the bear's belly.

I held the teddy bear in my arms and stood in the middle of the office, speaking clearly but just loud enough for everyone to hear.

"The stench is coming from inside this teddy bear."

Joel was the first one to rush out and stop me. "No way! This property belongs to the company! You have no right to touch it!"

Lola also tried to smooth things over. "Amelia? Is there a misunderstanding somewhere? You should just talk it out with us instead of acting rashly like this."

Nathan slowly backed toward the door, his hand resting on the door handle.

Officer Quinn stepped forward and sniffed as she crouched over. Her face turned grim at once.

"Everyone. Back off," she said, showing her police badge. "There's a high chance that this item is involved in a criminal case, and it is now being temporarily seized for inspection in accordance with the law."

Everyone fell silent at once. Even the whirring of the central air conditioning unit seemed particularly jarring now.

Everyone's eyes were now on the pink teddy bear.

The scissor blades sliced through the fabric and snipped all the haphazardly sewn threads clean. White cotton stuffing fell out and scattered all over the floor at once.

However, there was half of a transparent plastic bag peeking through the center of the white stuffing. They looked like pale bone fragments.

I covered my mouth and backed away at once.

Officer Quinn crouched down and looked at them silently. Then, she continued pulling out more stuffing from the bear, revealing two more such bags of bones inside.

She then spoke softly as though she was afraid of interrupting something.

"Three bags. Their preservation conditions are all different."

After a short pause, she said, "These remains belong to at least two people."

My legs turned to jelly, and I knocked over the chair behind me.

The teddy bear's face was still intact, and its round eyes were staring at me, its lips curled up into a smile that now looked extremely sinister.

Maxine's and Stacey's murder cases were solved, one after another.Joel was suspected of intentional homicide and desecration of a corpse, so he was officially detained as he awaited his trial.Meanwhile, Ricky was also suspected of intentional homicide, but his case would be handled separately. Maxine's parents rushed to the city from their hometown. The two elderly people stood at the entrance of the police station and wept uncontrollably. Her mother held my hand and said, "Thank you. Thank you for letting us bring our daughter home with us."I held her hand in return and didn't know what to say.Later on, Stacey's parents also arrived at the station. Her mother was in very bad shape and needed someone to hold her up the entire time. Her father, on the other hand, had gray hair all over his head as he stood in the corner, smoking cigarette after cigarette. However, there was one more Jane Doe who hadn't been identified yet. She wasn't Maxine nor was she Stacey. The police sti

"Those two bags of remains were already inside the teddy bear before I did anything!" Joel exclaimed.I didn't look at him again and just turned to walk out. Officer Quinn was waiting for me outside."What did he say?" she asked. I repeated everything Joel told me. She fell silent for a bit after that."Gail is the key to this mystery," she said. "She used to be in charge of the old storeroom. If the teddy bear was already tampered with while it was still in the old building, she might actually know something about it."Soon, the police retrieved missing persons records from four to five years ago. There were a total of three matches for the descriptions they put in, which were young women in their early 20s who'd gone missing in this city. The first photo was of Kathleen Newell. She was a 20-year-old college student who went missing five years ago.The second photo was of Stacey Andrews. She was a 21-year-old beautician who went missing four and a half years ago.The third ph

The teddy bear had moved along with us from the old building to the new, from the old warehouse to the new office, and finally, next to my work desk. That afternoon, Officer Sloan accompanied me to the old office building. It was now an apartment building, and the property manager was a man in his 50s.After checking Officer Sloan's credentials, he brought out an old ledger and said, "I remember Starshade Creatives. Before they moved out, they were frequently in arrears on property fees for over a year."Officer Sloan asked, "How was it settled afterward?""They suddenly settled in one lump sum," the man said."Who paid?"The manager flipped through his ledger again. "A person named Gail Pattinson. She said she was the office admin manager."It was raining when we walked out of the property management office. I stood on the ground floor and looked up at the seventh floor. The windows were all tightly shut. There were at least ten different families living there now, but none o

Also, nobody knew just how many victims this teddy bear had claimed. It was dark by the time I walked out of the police station. My phone buzzed a couple of times. They were all from my colleagues.Dave asked, "Amelia? I heard that you were the one who called the police. Was there really something inside the teddy bear?"The intern, Heather Cross, asked, "Are you okay, Amelia? That was frightening as hell!"Lola wrote, "Amelia, the company will be closed tomorrow. Rest well."I never replied to a single message. Instead, I called for an Uber to send me home.We passed by the office building on the way, and I asked the Uber driver to pause there for a second. The whole building was dark except for the 14th floor, which was where our office was located. The police were still there.I stared at the window and thought about Maxine. She had died at work, strangled to death by her own boyfriend before being dismembered and stuffed inside an innocent-looking pink teddy bear. Then, the

"If I come clean, will I be able to get a lighter sentence?" Joel asked.Officer Quinn didn't answer his question. She simply said, "Start talking first."There was a long bout of silence. The silence lasted for so long that I thought they had left the room. Then, Joel's voice was heard."Maxine… I was the one who killed her."I sat on the bench in the hallway and felt as though my soul had just left my body.Joel's voice continued trickling through the door."We dated for a little over half a year. She wanted to break up with me, but I refused. There was nobody at the office that day, and we got into a heated argument at her desk. I then acted impulsively and accidentally strangled her to death."When I finally came back to my senses, she was already dead.""Then, what happened after that?" Officer Quinn asked."I dealt with her body. Stuffed her into a plastic bag and hid her inside the teddy bear.""Why did you pick the teddy bear?""Because it was big enough, and everyo

Officer Quinn opened the folder."Maxine Thayer, female, 28 years old. She joined Starshade Creatives three years ago and worked in the graphic design department."She went missing a year ago. Her parents live in another city and reported her missing, but there have been no leads so far."I asked, "Did she have a boyfriend?"Officer Quinn hesitated for a while. "Yes, she did. And his name is Joel Winters."I was stunned. "My manager? Joel Winters?""Yes," Officer Quinn replied. "They dated for a little over six months. They'd just broken up when Maxine went missing."I felt a chill down my spine."Did Joel call the police?""No. He told others that Maxine left the city after breaking up with him." Officer Quinn took a sip of water. "But it seems more likely that Maxine never went anywhere in the first place. She'd been at your office the whole time, waiting inside that teddy bear."My palms turned clammy and sweaty."Joel killed her?""He's a prime suspect for now, but we n
