Chapter 3

Author: Proud Onion
Apart from that, I also recalled Joel deliberately avoiding eye contact with me on several occasions.

The office was equipped with CCTV cameras installed everywhere. Previously, some design drafts had gone missing, and Nathan had granted temporary access to every employee to check the playback of their desk surroundings.

However, he never revoked access after that.

I logged into the system on a hunch, and to my surprise, I successfully got in.

My work desk was right in the line of sight from a CCTV camera, and so was the huge teddy bear. I replayed all the footage from a week ago and fast-forwarded until 9:00 am in the morning, when all my colleagues arrived at work one by one.

When Dave Hawkins from the sales department walked past my desk, he frowned a little and instinctively covered his nose.

I replayed that moment and enlarged the video.

He hadn't been looking at me, but rather, the teddy bear next to me.

My grip on the mouse tightened. I rubbed the edge of the mouse with my fingertips until it felt rough as I scrolled through the recordings frame by frame.

All of my colleagues who frowned, covered their noses, and took detours around my desk hadn't been staring at me after all.

They were all staring at the pink teddy bear next to me.

I jumped to my feet at once, accidentally spilling half a cup of ice water on the table. The icy-cold water splashed into my lap as well, but I didn't feel it.

I rushed over to the mirror. The woman looking back at me looked pale, sickly, and had serious dark eye circles.

It dawned on me just then—everyone hadn't been avoiding me in the past two weeks. Rather, they'd been avoiding the teddy bear.

Early the next morning, I sat in my seat and stared at the pink teddy bear all day.

I couldn't focus on a single task on my computer.

When my colleagues finally went out during lunch break, I went to the washroom. I crouched in a corner while hugging my shaky knees.

I couldn't stay here any longer.

At 3:00 pm that day, I opened my email and drafted my resignation letter.

"I would like to resign from my position due to personal reasons. Kindly approve my resignation. Thank you."

I also CC'ed Lola and Joel in the email.

The moment I clicked "send", I finally heaved a sigh of relief.

As long as I was gone from this position, I wouldn't have to endure those inexplicable stares from my colleagues anymore.

Joel's reply came in much quicker than I expected. Just five minutes later, he rushed over to my desk and said, "Amelia, come with me to the conference room for a bit."

There were only the two of us there. The first thing he said to me was, "Are your colleagues not treating you well or making you feel uncomfortable? I'll hold a meeting tomorrow to tell them all off. Let's not be hasty with our decisions."

I shook my head. "It's not that."

"Then, is it your salary? Let me discuss increasing your salary with the CEO. I'll propose a 30% increase, effective immediately."

I still shook my head. "It's not that either."

Joel grew anxious. He placed his hands against the table and asked in a low voice, "Then, I hope you'll reconsider your resignation. The project we're all working on is due at the end of this month, and this is a critical period. We need you. You can't leave, Amelia."

I looked at him and suddenly found it ridiculous.

I'd only just joined the company three months ago and hadn't even joined the project's core group chat. So, how could he say that he needed me on this project?

I insisted on leaving.

When I was getting off work, I packed up all my things and headed for the elevator. The doors were just about to close when Joel suddenly rushed over to me and stopped the doors from closing.

His palms were sweaty and clammy. He was literally shaking.

"Amelia," he said. "I'll give you 50 thousand dollars. Just stay at your desk for another month. Just another month."

I stared at him. "Why?"

He gulped and didn't answer me. Instead, he took out his phone and immediately transferred the money to me as though he was scared that I would change my mind.

Seconds later, my phone buzzed with a notification from the bank. I'd just received 50 thousand dollars from him. The transfer remark said, "Work from your desk."

I stared at the four words and felt the hackles in the back of my neck rising.

The look in Joel's eyes wasn't a plea for me to stay. Instead, it was fear. An immense fear. It was as though something terrible was going to happen if I left my desk.

I didn't finish processing my resignation. I didn't promise him anything either.

I went straight home that evening.

Maxine's and Stacey's murder cases were solved, one after another.Joel was suspected of intentional homicide and desecration of a corpse, so he was officially detained as he awaited his trial.Meanwhile, Ricky was also suspected of intentional homicide, but his case would be handled separately. Maxine's parents rushed to the city from their hometown. The two elderly people stood at the entrance of the police station and wept uncontrollably. Her mother held my hand and said, "Thank you. Thank you for letting us bring our daughter home with us."I held her hand in return and didn't know what to say.Later on, Stacey's parents also arrived at the station. Her mother was in very bad shape and needed someone to hold her up the entire time. Her father, on the other hand, had gray hair all over his head as he stood in the corner, smoking cigarette after cigarette. However, there was one more Jane Doe who hadn't been identified yet. She wasn't Maxine nor was she Stacey. The police sti

"Those two bags of remains were already inside the teddy bear before I did anything!" Joel exclaimed.I didn't look at him again and just turned to walk out. Officer Quinn was waiting for me outside."What did he say?" she asked. I repeated everything Joel told me. She fell silent for a bit after that."Gail is the key to this mystery," she said. "She used to be in charge of the old storeroom. If the teddy bear was already tampered with while it was still in the old building, she might actually know something about it."Soon, the police retrieved missing persons records from four to five years ago. There were a total of three matches for the descriptions they put in, which were young women in their early 20s who'd gone missing in this city. The first photo was of Kathleen Newell. She was a 20-year-old college student who went missing five years ago.The second photo was of Stacey Andrews. She was a 21-year-old beautician who went missing four and a half years ago.The third ph

The teddy bear had moved along with us from the old building to the new, from the old warehouse to the new office, and finally, next to my work desk. That afternoon, Officer Sloan accompanied me to the old office building. It was now an apartment building, and the property manager was a man in his 50s.After checking Officer Sloan's credentials, he brought out an old ledger and said, "I remember Starshade Creatives. Before they moved out, they were frequently in arrears on property fees for over a year."Officer Sloan asked, "How was it settled afterward?""They suddenly settled in one lump sum," the man said."Who paid?"The manager flipped through his ledger again. "A person named Gail Pattinson. She said she was the office admin manager."It was raining when we walked out of the property management office. I stood on the ground floor and looked up at the seventh floor. The windows were all tightly shut. There were at least ten different families living there now, but none o

Also, nobody knew just how many victims this teddy bear had claimed. It was dark by the time I walked out of the police station. My phone buzzed a couple of times. They were all from my colleagues.Dave asked, "Amelia? I heard that you were the one who called the police. Was there really something inside the teddy bear?"The intern, Heather Cross, asked, "Are you okay, Amelia? That was frightening as hell!"Lola wrote, "Amelia, the company will be closed tomorrow. Rest well."I never replied to a single message. Instead, I called for an Uber to send me home.We passed by the office building on the way, and I asked the Uber driver to pause there for a second. The whole building was dark except for the 14th floor, which was where our office was located. The police were still there.I stared at the window and thought about Maxine. She had died at work, strangled to death by her own boyfriend before being dismembered and stuffed inside an innocent-looking pink teddy bear. Then, the

"If I come clean, will I be able to get a lighter sentence?" Joel asked.Officer Quinn didn't answer his question. She simply said, "Start talking first."There was a long bout of silence. The silence lasted for so long that I thought they had left the room. Then, Joel's voice was heard."Maxine… I was the one who killed her."I sat on the bench in the hallway and felt as though my soul had just left my body.Joel's voice continued trickling through the door."We dated for a little over half a year. She wanted to break up with me, but I refused. There was nobody at the office that day, and we got into a heated argument at her desk. I then acted impulsively and accidentally strangled her to death."When I finally came back to my senses, she was already dead.""Then, what happened after that?" Officer Quinn asked."I dealt with her body. Stuffed her into a plastic bag and hid her inside the teddy bear.""Why did you pick the teddy bear?""Because it was big enough, and everyo

Officer Quinn opened the folder."Maxine Thayer, female, 28 years old. She joined Starshade Creatives three years ago and worked in the graphic design department."She went missing a year ago. Her parents live in another city and reported her missing, but there have been no leads so far."I asked, "Did she have a boyfriend?"Officer Quinn hesitated for a while. "Yes, she did. And his name is Joel Winters."I was stunned. "My manager? Joel Winters?""Yes," Officer Quinn replied. "They dated for a little over six months. They'd just broken up when Maxine went missing."I felt a chill down my spine."Did Joel call the police?""No. He told others that Maxine left the city after breaking up with him." Officer Quinn took a sip of water. "But it seems more likely that Maxine never went anywhere in the first place. She'd been at your office the whole time, waiting inside that teddy bear."My palms turned clammy and sweaty."Joel killed her?""He's a prime suspect for now, but we n
