Chapter 4

Saturday.

2:00 PM.

The blacked-out private chopper carrying the elite squad from the Trials landed in the central plaza.

Within ten minutes, the plaza was packed with two thousand people.

Scarlett stood at the very front, dressed tight enough to cut off circulation, acting like the perfect Luna-in-waiting.

A banner from the Enforcer Council hung behind her: 【A HEROES’ WELCOME TO OUR ALPHA SQUAD!】

She’d pulled out all the stops.

I stood on the steps at the edge of the plaza, an outcast from the frenzied crowd.

People were filming me, live-streaming me.

The comments were probably a flood of curses.

Julian was the third one off the ramp.

He was dressed in black combat fatigues.

The overwhelming presence of a top-tier Alpha washed over the plaza.

His aura was darker, more dangerous than before, still laced with the faint scent of blood.

Scarlett rushed to greet him, her posture a perfect picture of an adoring Luna welcoming her mate.

“Julian, congratulations on your return! Some… unpleasant things happened while you were away. A freshman, Aurora, has been using your credit card and spreading rumors that you two are close. Here, this is the audio proof.”

She showed him her phone, her voice a mix of flirtation and self-importance.

“But I’ve already handled it for you. I confiscated the card, and the academy has permanently revoked her honors. Julian, this is the perfect chance for you to set the record straight. We wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea about you.”

The plaza fell dead silent.

Every eye was on Julian.

He looked up.

His molten gold eyes swept past Scarlett, over the sea of faces, and locked directly onto mine.

Two hundred people stood between us, but our gazes met.

His expression shifted.

His eyes flashed Alpha gold.

Then his eyes dropped.

They landed on the back of my hand, on the ugly, weeping gash left by the silver.

It was still too corrupted to heal.

He saw my pale lips, the way my face had thinned.

And his eyes… they darkened.

And darkened.

Until they settled into a terrifying look I knew all too well.

The last time I saw that expression, he was about to rip out the throat of a rival who had trespassed on our territory.

Someone was in for a world of pain.

Scarlett followed his gaze, saw me, and a triumphant smile curved her lips.

She stepped closer, placing a delicate hand on Julian’s arm.

She faced the crowd, her voice soft but clear for all to hear.

“Julian, don’t be shy! Don’t hold back! Tell her. Tell everyone, right now, what your relationship really is!”

Two thousand phones were raised in unison.

Two thousand lenses, like the barrels of two thousand guns, all aimed at me.

Julian violently shook Scarlett’s hand off his arm.

He moved through the crowd.

Every step radiated a power that screamed get out of my way.

The weaker wolves flinched.

They bowed their heads.

They scrambled back.

The crowd parted like the sea.

Scarlett hurried after him, her voice high with excitement. “Julian, she harassed you! You need to let everyone know the truth!”

Julian stopped in front of me.

He reached out, but his touch was surprisingly gentle.

He turned my hand over, his fingers hovering just above the festering silver wound.

“Who did this?”

His voice was low, but it held a rage that could freeze air.

Behind him, Scarlett’s heart leaped.

She thought he was about to punish me.

She eagerly stepped forward to take the credit.

“Don’t worry about it, Julian. I did it. It’s my duty to protect the academy’s integrity. Besides, she was shamelessly blackmailing you…”

Her words trailed off as a blush crept up her cheeks.

She lowered her head, waiting for his praise.

The entire plaza held its breath, waiting for Julian’s final judgment.

Julian dropped my hand.

He turned to Scarlett.

Deadly slow.

The killing intent rolling off him was enough to choke the entire plaza.

“Let me get this straight,” his voice was a low, lethal growl. “You’re saying... she blackmailed me?”

Scarlett nodded eagerly, adoration and pride shining in her eyes.

Julian scanned the crowd, his gaze sweeping over the upturned faces and the greedy, recording phones.

Then he spoke, his face a blank mask.

“Her full name is Aurora Valerius.”

“My father’s granddaughter.”

“The sole female heir of the Valerius Bloodline.”

“And my own flesh and blood.”

“My niece.”

He paused, his eyes like daggers, pinning Scarlett’s now-ashen face.

“Now. Say it again. Tell me what gave you the nerve to lay a hand on the Valerius heir?”

Julian blocked my path in the hallway.“Hey, where’s that tactical jacket?” He looked from me to my bag. “The one I gave you. You better bring it home. What am I supposed to tell Grandma if she asks?”I shrugged. “It’s ruined.”“Ruined?” He arched an eyebrow.“It got torn during that whole thing with Scarlett’s crew. Didn’t you see?” I held up my hands. “And I don’t have the money for a new one.”“You have the black card.”“I used it to treat Amelia and the others to a feast last month. A month-long feast. Your idea.”Julian’s expression went dark.He took a deep breath, like he was fighting back an impulse. The next second, he had his phone out.His fingers flew across the screen. My own phone lit up with a blinding transfer notification.A number with a long, long string of zeroes.“Is that enough for a jacket?” he asked, his face cold. “Stop wasting money.”“Are you worried about your wallet, or about me?”“Both,” he said without hesitation. “Mostly, I’m worried about your talent fo

Wednesday.3:00 PM.The Great Hall. The Headmaster of Ettelgard Academy was there in person. The sheer force of his presence made the air even heavier than the punishment announcements.“Aurora Valerius,” he said. His voice was heavy with deliberate respect.I stood and walked to the stage.I accepted the heavy medallion for “Elite Vanguard.”The cool metal was a stark contrast to the brand of shame I’d worn just days before. The Headmaster shook my hand. His eyes held genuine apology.“The academy bears undeniable responsibility for this. Our review process was flawed. We have already begun a complete overhaul.”He paused. “The Elder who signed your punishment order has been stripped of all his duties. As of next month, he is exiled to the Frozen Tundra. The northernmost border. Guarding against feral Rogues in the dead of winter.”The Frozen Tundra.A place of perpetual ice, where the cold could freeze your marrow. The only company was the endless wind and feral wolves. For an Elder

Monday morning, my phone vibrated so hard it shook my desk.Amelia shot up in bed, her hair a mess. “What’s happening?”I opened the notification. It was a top-level bulletin from the Enforcer Tribunal.【NOTICE OF FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION INTO SCARLETT BEAUMONT.】Below it were the signatures of all nine Elders. My heart started to pound.Amelia leaned over my shoulder. “Whoa,” she breathed. “They’re going to crucify her.”I didn’t say anything.I knew this was just the beginning. At 2:00 PM, an academy-wide email alert hit everyone's phone.【DECISION:Scarlett Beaumont: Expelled.Blacklisted by the Royal Council. Her Beta family?Stripped of all territory rights.Five years in the wasteland.】I read the announcement three times. They threw the book at her. They left her no way out.The network exploded.【God, permanent expulsion. We had dinner at an exclusive, Alpha-only club off-campus.Julian had just poured me some juice when he suddenly went rigid. His eyes unfocused for a second.I knew that look.He was being forcibly pulled into a mind-link.A Luna-exclusive mind-link.His face fell.He looked like he’d just been skinned alive.“Mom, let me explain—”He was cut off.I couldn’t hear what my grandmother was saying. But from the sweat on his forehead and the way his knuckles were white around his fork, it was epic.“We both agreed to it! I didn’t think it would get this bad!”He tried to defend himself, but his voice got weaker and weaker. After half a minute, he looked like his soul had left his body.He just stared at his steak.“What did she say?” I asked, playing dumb.“She told me to get my ass home tomorrow,” he mumbled. He started cutting my steak for me, his movements jerky with anger. “Said I was a pathetic excuse for an uncle. Letting a pup in my own territory get bullied. Said she could adopt a s

The doors of the Tribunal slammed shut. The air grew heavy.Scarlett knelt on the floor, her makeup smeared, looking like a drowned cat.Nine Elders sat in a row, their faces grim as Judgment Day.Julian stood beside me.He didn’t even glance at Scarlett. He just pulled up his phone. An encrypted bloodline file appeared on the screen. The golden seal glowed coldly: 【The Lycan Royal Council Registry · House of Valerius · Direct Bloodline · Aurora Valerius】.The nine Elders were silent. The one in the center turned to the Elder who had signed my punishment order. “You froze the honors of a Valerius heir based on a doctored recording? Without even verifying her identity?”The man’s face was white. His lips trembled, but no words came out.The head Elder then turned to Scarlett, his voice sharp. “You used your position on the Enforcer Council to intercept communications and freeze accounts. Explain yourself.”Scarlett looked up, her eyes swollen. “I… I don’t know how the chat logs were lea

The plaza was dead silent for three full seconds. Then the crowd exploded.Everyone was stunned.“Heir to the Valerius Bloodline.”The title echoed in their minds.Scarlett’s face went white. She stumbled backward.“No! Impossible!” she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. “She’s a nobody! A pathetic parasite! She can’t be a pureblood Lycan!”Julian didn’t even look at her.He stepped forward, his large hand gently cradling my wounded wrist. The moment his skin neared the raw, silver-burned flesh, a ferocious wave of Alpha aura and absolute command erupted from him.Students nearby went weak at the knees. They collapsed to the stone ground, unable to withstand the pressure, whimpering in submission. He unleashed his absolute Alpha authority. He forced a massive, plaza-wide mind-link.He shoved the audio directly into everyone's heads.“Let me show you the real truth,” his voice echoed in our minds.Three clear messages played through the mind-link.The first was my blocked dist
