Chapter 3

Penulis: Lynette Woods
"Are you making the food or not? My boyfriend's people will be moving into this neighborhood any day now. You'd better start kissing up to me while you still can, or you're gonna regret it."

I smiled at her threats. "What a coincidence. Kissing up has never been my strong suit. Since your boyfriend's so powerful, I'm sure you can find someone else to cook for you."

I turned and went back inside.

A second later, my phone started buzzing nonstop.

[You're just some pizza shop worker, and you think you can talk back to me?]

[Just wait. I'm not just going to get you fired. I'm going to have my boyfriend throw you out of this whole neighborhood!]

I stared at the threats lighting up my screen and did not even know what to say.

I was the little sister of one of the most powerful Dons in the country. I oversaw every operation on this street.

Yet my neighbor was threatening to run me out of my own territory.

If word of this got out, my friends would not let me hear the end of it for a year.

One thing in her messages did catch my attention, though.

Her boyfriend was only a Capo. By all rights, he should not have had the nerve to make threats like these, not unless someone higher up was backing him.

That meant the rot I had been tracking inside the family might run deeper than I had thought.

I sent Dante a text message: [I've figured out what's been going on with that street. Tomorrow night at 9:00 pm, I want a meeting with every person in charge of this neighborhood.]

His reply came almost instantly: [If you're the one calling the meeting, of course. Send word. No one skips.]

The following evening, I came home at my usual time.

The moment I stepped out of my car, I saw Bianca standing at the entrance of the apartment building with her arms crossed.

Next to her stood a heavyset man wearing a gold watch, his expression smug and superior.

I glanced at the tattoos on his arms and recognized him immediately. He was Enzo Moretti, the Capo in charge of this neighborhood.

Bianca spotted me and jabbed a finger in my direction. "That's her!"

Enzo looked me up and down and said coldly, "So, you're the neighbor who's been giving my girlfriend attitude?

"How long have you been living on this street? I've never seen you before."

I had been deliberately keeping a low profile to investigate the irregularities in this neighborhood.

I never brought bodyguards, never used the family's cars, and rarely even wore jewelry.

Someone at his level would never have had reason to cross paths with me.

The moment Bianca heard Enzo's question, her eyes lit up as though she had just found the proof she needed.

"She's only been here a month! You don't even know her, so she's obviously some nobody with no one backing her up! Get rid of her! Kick her out of this neighborhood!"

Enzo smiled, his eyes full of disdain. "So, you're new around here. Guess it's time someone taught you how things work."

He lifted his chin, his tone dripping with arrogance. "Since you've been cooking for Bianca these past few weeks, I'll let you stay in this neighborhood. But you'll have to agree to a few conditions.

"First, pay a protection fee of 50,000 dollars.

"Second, you cook dinner for Bianca every night. If she has guests, you serve them too.

"Third, you refused to cook for her last night and she had to spend her own money on delivery. That's 1,000 dollars.

"She went hungry because of you and was in a bad mood all night, so that's 30,000 for emotional distress. Then there's the phone she broke because she was so angry. That's another 5,000.

"Your total comes to 86,000 dollars. You wanna transfer it now, or should we walk you to the bank?"

The next morning, I had barely set foot back in the neighborhood when I spotted a crowd gathered at the entrance of my apartment building. They were holding signs covered in insults directed at me.The moment they saw me, they surged forward."Heartless Principessa! Get out of here!""Bring Enzo back to run things!"Someone even grabbed a handful of garbage and hurled it straight at me.I stood in the middle of the crowd, brushed the scraps of paper off my shoulder, and calmly pulled out my phone. I sent Luca a message: [Go ahead.]His reply came in less than two seconds: [Copy. Evidence and the legal statement go live now.]I put my phone away and let the people around me film to their hearts' content. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. The great mafia Principessa, cornered and publicly humiliated on her own turf by a mob of ordinary people. Some of them had already started livestreaming, eager to broadcast every second of my supposed disgrace across the city.A few

One evening about two weeks later, I was in my study going over the family's recent financial records when the Underboss, Luca Conti, called unexpectedly. He was usually the most composed person I knew, but this time, his voice carried an unmistakable weight."Principessa, we've got a problem. "Bianca and Enzo posted videos on social media. The internet's tearing you apart right now. A bunch of influencers have already jumped on the bandwagon and started making their own videos."There's a crowd forming outside the neighborhood too. Several of the bars and casinos are being blocked off, and we've been getting complaints from business owners nonstop."I set the documents down and opened my phone. Two familiar faces appeared almost immediately in the trending section of my feed.Enzo was wearing a hospital gown, lying pale-faced on a bed in a private clinic. He looked into the camera and spoke in a weak voice."Hey, everyone, my name's Enzo Moretti. I've been holding down thi

Marco cut Enzo off sharply, "Enough! Everything you just listed is part of your job. You don't get to stand in front of the Principessa and take credit for doing the bare minimum."I raised an eyebrow and turned a cold look on Enzo. "And collecting protection money was also for the family?"The moment the words left my mouth, the large screen behind me lit up. Financial records, transfer logs, and revenue breakdowns from every operation in the neighborhood appeared one after another.I picked up the microphone, and my voice carried across the entire room."Over the past five years, you've been charging a protection fee to every new resident who moves into this neighborhood, all under the guise of maintaining order for the family. “Five thousand dollars for regular tenants, and a minimum of 10,000 for businesses. Over five years, the total amount you've collected in unauthorized protection fees comes to 370,000 dollars."Not a single cent of that money entered the family's book

Enzo stood rooted to the spot, his face plastered with an ingratiating smile as he bowed and nodded at me nonstop. Bianca's eyes kept darting around, stealing glances at Marco, who was still on the phone nearby.Looking at the three of them, I had already formed a rough picture of the situation.I did not bother with them any further and headed to the family club with the Soldatos. Before long, Marco arrived as well and gave me a slight nod."Principessa, we're ready to begin."I looked out at the dense crowd and tapped the microphone. The sharp whine of feedback cut through every whisper in the room. Heads dropped all at once. Almost no one dared to make eye contact with me.They were clearly terrified that I would single them out in front of everyone, and even more terrified that I would pull on one thread and unravel everything they did not want said and did not dare to say. After all, drawing a steady paycheck from a family operation was far more practical than anythin

The entire street fell silent in an instant. No one moved. No one even dared to breathe. They could only stand there frozen as they stared at Marco.Marco walked briskly to where I stood, bowed at the waist, and gestured respectfully to the side. "Principessa Vitale, the meeting is ready. Don Vitale has instructed that you'll be chairing tonight's session personally. Once all personnel have checked in, we can begin."I nodded. The two Soldati who had been closing in on me moments ago stumbled backward as if they had been burned. The color drained from their faces instantly.I adjusted my sleeves in no particular hurry, letting my gaze pass over Enzo and Bianca before settling on Enzo."There's no rush. The meeting can wait. Let's settle this little matter first."Cold sweat broke out across Enzo's forehead. He shot Bianca a vicious look as if he wanted nothing more than to tear her apart right then and there for dragging him into this.Bianca had gone pale, her lips tre

That single word from Marco was enough to stun everyone on the street. The smile on Enzo's face froze in place. Bianca's gaze darted between Marco and me, and for the first time, unease crept into her eyes. The people around us exchanged bewildered glances and began whispering among themselves."Principessa? What do they mean, Principessa?""Signor Benedetti must have the wrong person. She's just a regular tenant who moved in recently.""Right? She goes grocery shopping and cooks for herself every day. She doesn't even have a bodyguard. There's no way she's the Principessa.""I've seen her helping out at the pizza shop. A real mafia Principessa would never live like that."After a few seconds of silence, Enzo finally gathered himself. He stepped in front of Marco with a forced laugh. "Signor Benedetti, could you be mistaken? "Everyone in this neighborhood knows that Don Vitale's sister is someone of great standing. There's no way it could be her."She's just an ordinary t
