Chapter 4

Author: Lynette Woods
I had never imagined that someone would demand protection money from me on my own turf.

Enzo pulled out his phone and opened his banking app. "Eighty-six thousand dollars."

He held the screen up to my face. "Pay up and we'll pretend this never happened."

Bianca stood beside him, making no effort to hide the satisfaction on her face.

The commotion had already drawn a crowd from the surrounding buildings, but judging by their expressions, this kind of thing was nothing new to them.

A middle-aged woman from the building across the street caught my eye and said quietly, "Just pay him. His people really will throw you out."

Another neighbor looked on with the kind of amusement reserved for someone else's misfortune.

"You picked the wrong guy to mess with. Everyone knows Enzo Moretti runs this neighborhood."

I looked around at all the uneasy faces, then turned back to Enzo. "Does everyone who lives here have to pay you 50,000 in protection fees?"

Enzo scoffed. "Not everyone gets the privilege.

"I'm the Capo around here. Street patrols, neighbor disputes, business taxes... All of that falls under me.

"I handle your problems, so a little protection fee is the least you can do."

Bianca nodded right away. "Exactly. My boyfriend's even willing to take your money, and that's him doing you a favor. Just like how he lets you cook for me. You should be grateful."

I studied the two of them, then asked calmly, "What if I say no?"

The smile dropped from Enzo's face. "No?

"Let me spell it out for you. Tonight, the Don and the Principessa are coming to this neighborhood for a meeting.

"If I tell him there's an unregistered tenant causing trouble on our turf, you'll be out before sundown.

"Think it over. Eighty-six thousand dollars for peace of mind. That's a bargain."

Bianca's eyes suddenly lit up. "Wait, Enzo, the Don is really coming?"

Enzo nodded. "Of course. I got word this morning. The Don wants every person in charge of this neighborhood at the family's club by 9:00 pm. He and the Principessa are coming to inspect."

Bianca perked up immediately. "Enzo, do you know if the Don has a girlfriend?"

Enzo gave her a sideways look. "Why are you asking?"

She glanced away and tried to sound casual. "Just curious."

He narrowed his eyes and grabbed her chin, his voice turning sharp. "I'm warning you. Don't get any ideas.

"Don Vitale is known for being completely untouchable when it comes to women. He's cold and ruthless.

"If you offend him, you won't get anything out of it except trouble for me. And when that happens, don't expect me to save you."

Bianca quickly latched onto his arm and softened her voice. "Relax, I was just asking."

She said it was nothing, but her eyes were already darting around.

She clearly had not given up.

Watching her, I could not help but laugh. "Even if the Don were single, he wouldn't look twice at someone like you."

Her face twisted with rage. "What would some hick who cooks for a living know about anything? Pay the 86,000 right now, or once the Don gets here, it'll be too late to come crawling to me!"

I ignored her.

Enzo had run out of patience entirely. "I'll ask you one last time. Eighty-six thousand dollars. Are you paying or not?"

I met his gaze. "No."

Something dangerous flickered across Enzo's face. "Your choice."

He snapped his fingers. "Get this trespasser out of here."

Two of his Soldati moved toward me on command.

Before they could reach me, a voice cut through the crowd from behind. "The Don is here!"

Every head turned. A black SUV had pulled up at the curb.

My brother's right-hand man, Marco Benedetti, stepped out of the vehicle.

The entire street fell silent. The Soldati who had been closing in on me a second ago snapped to attention.

"Signor Benedetti."

"Good evening, sir."

Marco offered a brief nod in acknowledgment. His gaze swept over the crowd.

"What's going on here?"

Enzo hurried over, his face rearranging itself into an eager smile.

"Signor Benedetti, here's the situation.

"I just discovered an unregistered tenant in this neighborhood. She's been disrespecting my people and won't follow the rules around here.

" I was about to remove her so that she wouldn't cause any trouble for the Don and the Principessa tonight."

Bianca chimed in immediately, "That's right! She won't pay the protection fee, and she insulted the Don.

"She has zero respect for the family. Trash like her needs to be thrown out now!"

Marco's expression hardened. "What? Someone publicly insulted the Don? Take me to her."

Enzo turned back to the crowd with a triumphant look and pointed at me. "She's right there."

Marco followed the direction of his finger. His eyes landed on my face.

His eyes went wide, and his entire body went rigid. "Principessa?"

The next morning, I had barely set foot back in the neighborhood when I spotted a crowd gathered at the entrance of my apartment building. They were holding signs covered in insults directed at me.The moment they saw me, they surged forward."Heartless Principessa! Get out of here!""Bring Enzo back to run things!"Someone even grabbed a handful of garbage and hurled it straight at me.I stood in the middle of the crowd, brushed the scraps of paper off my shoulder, and calmly pulled out my phone. I sent Luca a message: [Go ahead.]His reply came in less than two seconds: [Copy. Evidence and the legal statement go live now.]I put my phone away and let the people around me film to their hearts' content. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. The great mafia Principessa, cornered and publicly humiliated on her own turf by a mob of ordinary people. Some of them had already started livestreaming, eager to broadcast every second of my supposed disgrace across the city.A few

One evening about two weeks later, I was in my study going over the family's recent financial records when the Underboss, Luca Conti, called unexpectedly. He was usually the most composed person I knew, but this time, his voice carried an unmistakable weight."Principessa, we've got a problem. "Bianca and Enzo posted videos on social media. The internet's tearing you apart right now. A bunch of influencers have already jumped on the bandwagon and started making their own videos."There's a crowd forming outside the neighborhood too. Several of the bars and casinos are being blocked off, and we've been getting complaints from business owners nonstop."I set the documents down and opened my phone. Two familiar faces appeared almost immediately in the trending section of my feed.Enzo was wearing a hospital gown, lying pale-faced on a bed in a private clinic. He looked into the camera and spoke in a weak voice."Hey, everyone, my name's Enzo Moretti. I've been holding down thi

Marco cut Enzo off sharply, "Enough! Everything you just listed is part of your job. You don't get to stand in front of the Principessa and take credit for doing the bare minimum."I raised an eyebrow and turned a cold look on Enzo. "And collecting protection money was also for the family?"The moment the words left my mouth, the large screen behind me lit up. Financial records, transfer logs, and revenue breakdowns from every operation in the neighborhood appeared one after another.I picked up the microphone, and my voice carried across the entire room."Over the past five years, you've been charging a protection fee to every new resident who moves into this neighborhood, all under the guise of maintaining order for the family. “Five thousand dollars for regular tenants, and a minimum of 10,000 for businesses. Over five years, the total amount you've collected in unauthorized protection fees comes to 370,000 dollars."Not a single cent of that money entered the family's book

Enzo stood rooted to the spot, his face plastered with an ingratiating smile as he bowed and nodded at me nonstop. Bianca's eyes kept darting around, stealing glances at Marco, who was still on the phone nearby.Looking at the three of them, I had already formed a rough picture of the situation.I did not bother with them any further and headed to the family club with the Soldatos. Before long, Marco arrived as well and gave me a slight nod."Principessa, we're ready to begin."I looked out at the dense crowd and tapped the microphone. The sharp whine of feedback cut through every whisper in the room. Heads dropped all at once. Almost no one dared to make eye contact with me.They were clearly terrified that I would single them out in front of everyone, and even more terrified that I would pull on one thread and unravel everything they did not want said and did not dare to say. After all, drawing a steady paycheck from a family operation was far more practical than anythin

The entire street fell silent in an instant. No one moved. No one even dared to breathe. They could only stand there frozen as they stared at Marco.Marco walked briskly to where I stood, bowed at the waist, and gestured respectfully to the side. "Principessa Vitale, the meeting is ready. Don Vitale has instructed that you'll be chairing tonight's session personally. Once all personnel have checked in, we can begin."I nodded. The two Soldati who had been closing in on me moments ago stumbled backward as if they had been burned. The color drained from their faces instantly.I adjusted my sleeves in no particular hurry, letting my gaze pass over Enzo and Bianca before settling on Enzo."There's no rush. The meeting can wait. Let's settle this little matter first."Cold sweat broke out across Enzo's forehead. He shot Bianca a vicious look as if he wanted nothing more than to tear her apart right then and there for dragging him into this.Bianca had gone pale, her lips tre

That single word from Marco was enough to stun everyone on the street. The smile on Enzo's face froze in place. Bianca's gaze darted between Marco and me, and for the first time, unease crept into her eyes. The people around us exchanged bewildered glances and began whispering among themselves."Principessa? What do they mean, Principessa?""Signor Benedetti must have the wrong person. She's just a regular tenant who moved in recently.""Right? She goes grocery shopping and cooks for herself every day. She doesn't even have a bodyguard. There's no way she's the Principessa.""I've seen her helping out at the pizza shop. A real mafia Principessa would never live like that."After a few seconds of silence, Enzo finally gathered himself. He stepped in front of Marco with a forced laugh. "Signor Benedetti, could you be mistaken? "Everyone in this neighborhood knows that Don Vitale's sister is someone of great standing. There's no way it could be her."She's just an ordinary t
