Chapter 1

Author: Homebody
My name was Carlos Aguilar, and I had worked my way up in the IT industry for eight years, rising through the ranks from a low-level employee to the department director that I was today.

Instead of spending my first pot of gold on a luxury car or using it for investments, I bought a huge lakeside luxury apartment in Lakeview Heights in the city center of Dunnington with cash instead.

Just the renovation alone took me another six months, and I cherished this apartment with all my heart, never letting anyone other than my closest family set foot in it.

Felix Madden was an intern who had just joined the department three months ago. He was in his early 20s, and he was very good at sweet-talking and getting things done. He fawned over the senior employees the moment he joined the company, especially me, affectionately calling me "Carl".

His actions and attentiveness bordered on being forced and deliberate. At first, I thought that he was just a young man trying to curry favor with his seniors at the workplace just to gain a foothold in the industry, so I didn't pay much attention to him and even offered him a few work-related tips occasionally.

One day, during a department dinner before the long Thanksgiving weekend holiday, someone asked about everyone's holiday plans, and I casually replied that I was going back to my hometown to visit my parents.

As soon as I said that, Felix leaned over and said, "Since you're going home for the holidays, that means your apartment is going to be vacant for a few days, right?

"My parents happen to be coming to Dunnington then. I've called up the hotels nearby, and the prices are three times as expensive as usual.

"Since your place is going to be vacant anyway, why don't you just let us stay there in the meantime? Don't worry, we'll put everything back in place once we're done."

I rejected it without any hesitation.

"It's not that I don't want to let you stay, Felix, but there are too many personal items of mine and quite a number of valuables there. I think you should book a hotel room as soon as possible before they actually run out of rooms."

Felix's smile froze on his face at once. He didn't say anything more and just got up and left. While turning the corner, I clearly heard him mutter under his breath, "Fine, don't let us stay, then, you selfish bastard. I have my ways."

I didn't take it to heart and just assumed that he was being a sulky brat.

I had taken an extra day off before the actual Thanksgiving weekend. After checking the water and electricity meters, I locked up all the doors and windows. Then I locked the main entrance door and went all the way back to my hometown.

My hometown was very far away, and the drive alone would take an entire day. That was also why I seldom went back at all.

After reaching my parents' home, I'd only just sat down to take a sip of water and rest when I received a call from my apartment management.

"Mr. Aguilar, a young man just led a group of people into your apartment. They have your door passcode and said that they were your relatives, so we didn't have to tell you about their arrival, but we still decided to report it to you."

My heart sank, and I quickly turned on the security camera app linked to my phone.

In the video, the young man leading the group was none other than Felix.

Behind him was a middle-aged couple, presumably his parents, who were dressed simply and carrying large suitcases behind them. Their faces were filled with excitement and curiosity.

No company was willing to hire Felix.Even if he went to the more dangerous construction sites for heavy labor or applied to work as a dishwasher in the restaurants and all the lowest-paying jobs possible, people still rejected him and refused to hire him upon learning of his past incident.Fiona suffered the same fate. Her reputation was ruined because of this incident, and she couldn't find any work either. Instead, she could only hide at home, fearing going out in case she got ridiculed on the streets and got pointed at and gossiped about by the neighbors.Their lives were in shambles.…The seven-day deadline quickly passed, and the Maddens failed to pay the total compensation on time. So, Elliot filed a lawsuit in court against them as he had said he would, forcibly seizing all of the remaining assets under their names, including the money that they had borrowed, their furniture, and their electrical appliances, to offset the compensation amount. However, it was still fa

Felix's father's eyes reddened as well. He pleaded, "Officer, Mr. Collins, please give us another chance. We know we were wrong now, and we will do our best to pay as much as we can. "But this figure is in the millions, and we really aren't able to come up with it at all. Please lower the amount for us. We promise that we will eventually pay everything back. Is that okay?"Fiona was also shocked by the demands. She wept bitterly and apologized profusely, begging, "Please, I swear that I won't do it ever again. I'll go to work properly and earn the money to pay for the damages, but please don't arrest me. Please don't let me get a criminal record. Please!"Felix was also sobbing so hard that he could barely breathe. The four of them kept crying and begging for mercy while still blaming each other for the wrongdoings. It was complete chaos, but they weren't as aggressive and arrogant as they were before. Instead, they were still remorseful and in great despair.Elliot replied calm

I was at my parents' home when I received the call from the police station. After answering it, I calmly replied, "Thank you for your help. I will have my lawyer handle the follow-up matters. Regarding the compensation, I will pursue the matter to the end according to the law."I will not accept any private mediation, and I will also not let them off the hook easily."After I hung up, Mom looked at me and asked, her voice tinged with worry, "Is everything settled, Carl? Do you want me to come with you and settle the matter?"I held Mom's hand and smiled at her, saying calmly, "Don't worry, Mom. Everything's already settled. Nothing bad will happen with the police officers and my lawyer on my side."Those people did wrong, so they should bear the consequences. I won't let them off so easily. If not, they would certainly go and harm other people again."Mom just nodded and didn't say anything more. She just patted the back of my hand, her eyes filled with pride and some pity. She k

Felix's father exclaimed, "Felix, that brat, just wanted to show off to us to boost his ego! He dragged us all down with him! We can't afford to pay the millions in losses. It's all his fault! It's got nothing to do with us at all!"His face was ashen, and his voice icy. "I warned him a long time ago that he had to make an honest living and not be too ambitious or vain, but he wouldn't listen. He insisted on lying to us. "Now look at what's happened! He caused such a huge mess for us! And we're not just going to have to pay for compensation but also face punishment for what he did! He's thoroughly disgraced us! He embarrassed us in front of everyone else!"We're all victims here too! Felix should be the only one responsible for this! We shouldn't have to bear any consequences or responsibilities! We shouldn't have to be punished either!"The officers watched Felix's parents shift all the blame onto him and sternly reminded them, saying, "You might have been deceived by your son, b

Felix and his family had no choice but to reluctantly pack up their belongings and head out the door with the police officers.Meanwhile, I was far away in my hometown, watching the live updates from my building's property management on my phone and listening to the conversation between Felix's family and the police officers. I was calm and undisturbed the entire time.I had a full chain of evidence against Felix, from the moment I refused to let him stay at my place, to his lying to his family, trespassing on my property, brazenly damaging my belongings, disturbing the peace, and stealing my jewelry—literally every wrongdoing of his and his family's.I just had to wait for the police to finish taking their statements before formally initiating legal proceedings against them.I was going to make Felix and his family pay the price for their actions. At the police station, the officers first registered the identities of the four Maddens into the police system, then took them into se

The officers looked at Felix's arrogant and unrepentant demeanor, and their tones grew increasingly solemn."Don't be so arrogant, Felix Madden. The homeowner has already submitted a complete chain of evidence to us, including surveillance footage of your trespassing, images of the damaged property, screenshots of your boasting on social media, reports of the neighbors' complaints, and a complete record from the property management."You illegally occupied someone else's residence and intentionally damaged their property. The preliminary damage caused exceeds one million dollars, which is a substantial amount and constitutes a violation of the law."At best, you will face huge compensation payments. At worst, you'll receive a prison sentence, criminal charges, and a criminal record.""What? One million dollars?"Felix's voice raised a whole pitch higher when he heard the staggering amount. His arrogant expression froze on his face, and for the first time, panic appeared in his eye
