Chapter 6

作者: Words to Life
Ian, wanting to reassure me, sent me a surveillance clip.

In the video, Steve was trying to cling to his last shred of dignity.

Pinching his nose, he pointed disdainfully at a dark, lumpy mess in the bowl that vaguely resembled lasagna. "Paige, could you at least wash your hands before cooking? It's basic hygiene."

Paige was picking at her feet. Hearing this, she slapped him hard across the face, sending his glasses flying.

"Stop putting on airs!" she snapped. "Keep your mouth shut unless you've got money! I only humored you and washed your feet back then because you were a rich professor with status. But now you're just a useless freeloader, so how dare you look down on me? Eat!"

She upended the bowl of slop onto Steve's head, and greasy liquid dropped down his once-proud scalp.

Steve trembled but didn't dare fight back. He was starving. With shaking hands, he scooped lasagne off the floor and shoved it into his mouth, tears streaming down his face.

The dark crimson blood reeked of a metallic and foul odor.Steve froze in place. But his first reaction wasn't to help or even to panic. Instead, it was to stare down at his own shoes, now smeared with blood.Frowning in disgust, he quickly took his shoes off and threw them into the trash."Finally, it's quiet and clean," he muttered to himself as a strange, twisted smile spread across his face.A neighbor called the police.Sirens wailed as ambulances and police cars arrived one after another.Paige was rushed to the hospital, but the baby couldn't be saved. The doctor said it had been a deformed fetus, incompletely developed from the start. Even if it had been carried to term, it wouldn't have survived. So much for Steve's prized "primitive genes".When the police took him away, Steve was still frantically scrubbing his hands. He was washing them with that cheap air freshener, the same bottle I'd once thrown into the water. As they handcuffed him, he kept laughing, drool dr

Security rushed onto the stage and pinned the frantic Steve to the ground as if he were a rabid dog.Paige was still throwing a fit. "Let go of my man! You're all nothing but nasty people who can't stand to see us happy!"The university officials went pale, and they immediately announced Steve's suspension pending a full investigation.I walked out of the hall. The sunlight outside was so blinding, it made me dizzy. The chaos behind me already felt distant, as if it no longer had anything to do with me.Steve was still putting up a fight, his voice breaking as he screamed at my retreating figure."Audrey! You've ruined me, but don't think you'll get away! With a son-in-law like me, Maurice can forget about ever getting that fellowship!"I stopped short, but Ian was already shielding me with his body. He glanced back at Steve sprawled on the ground as if looking at a bug."Oh, I forgot to tell you that Mr. Stafford voluntarily came forward yesterday and reported everything to the

My suspension quickly drew media attention. To mask the stench he'd picked up from days spent in the pigsty, Steve drenched himself in half a bottle of perfume. But the odor had already seeped into his skin, mingling with the perfume into a strange, rotting-fruit smell.Paige was ordered to stay backstage at the hotel. Steve claimed he had a surprise prepared for her.He held my arm tightly. "Audrey, smile. Don't embarrass me," he warned under his breath, digging his fingers sharply into my side.I swallowed my disgust and plastered on a perfect, polite smile. The venue was packed. Rumors from the past few days had already spread far and wide. Everyone was watching us, waiting for our official response. But Steve walked onto the stage as if nothing were wrong."Esteemed colleagues," he began smoothly, "I'd like to take this opportunity today to present my research findings on primitive humanity and the philosophical return to origins, which I conducted during my time as a volunt

Paige's eyes lit up, and she immediately reached for the bottle of supplements."Well, aren't you thoughtful! Looks like you know what's good for you."Just as her hand was about to touch the bottle, the study door burst open, and Steve stormed out."Stop!"Without even asking what the pills were, he shoved me hard. Caught completely off guard, the back of my head slammed into the corner of the table. A burst of blinding pain shot through me, and everything went dark for a moment.Steve didn't even spare me a glance. He snatched the bottle from my hand and shouted, "Audrey Stafford, have you lost your mind? This is my child, my bloodline!" His face twisted with rage. "How could you be so vile? I can't believe you're actually trying to harm an innocent life!"I clutched the back of my bleeding head and struggled to sit up. As I watched him put on an act as a devoted father, I suddenly laughed."Innocent life? Steve, how dare you even talk about harming an innocent life!" I scre

I arrived home, a place that was saturated with Steve's rules—hands must be sanitized upon entry, the couch must remain perfectly unwrinkled, and the smell of cooking oil was absolutely forbidden. He had treated me like nothing more than a live-in cleaning lady.I walked into the kitchen and filled a bucket with water. Then, I took his prized collection of books and dropped them in, one by one.But that wasn't enough.I dug out a few bottles of cheap air freshener from the cabinet and sprayed them wildly throughout the house. This was the smell Steve hated the most. In fact, he called it the stench of the lower class.Once I was done, I sat on the couch and waited quietly. At 2:00 am, the door opened. The overpowering stench of pigsty and foot odor flooded the living room.Steve sauntered in hand-in-hand with Paige, brazen and unapologetic. Seeing the mess in the house, he froze for a moment. But soon, an expression of pure enjoyment spread across his face. With a deep inhale,
