Chapter 1

"Elena, this is our 19th wedding. I promise: this time will be the last."

Giovanni Rossi's voice on the phone was as gentle as ever.

"Put on your gown and wait for me at the church. I'll go pick up your mother's veil, and then I'll come."

I stood quietly on the cold stone steps outside the church, just as I had on the previous 18 occasions.

Thirty minutes passed. Giovanni did not show.

Then the church bells rang, and Lina Davinci's video call popped up.

"Hah… hah…"

Crude panting and the sound of barking burst from the phone.

On the screen was my mother's veil, the one she had sewn by hand, the only thing she left me after she died. It was now pinned beneath a rutting toy poodle.

Sticky, obscene sounds. Filthy paw prints. The violent tearing of fabric.

All of it drowned in Lina's shrill, unrestrained laughter.

"Bella! Tear it apart! This piece of trash suits you perfectly!"

The camera tilted.

Giovanni's bare back filled the frame as he buried his face in Lina's neck.

"Don't make trouble," he said hoarsely, his voice lazy with satisfaction. "Once I calm Elena down, I'll come back to keep you company."

I gagged.

A metallic sweetness surged up my throat. I dug my nails into my palm until the skin broke.

I thought I would cry.

I thought I would collapse.

However, I did not.

I simply turned around, expressionless.

My phone vibrated again; a voice message from Lina, dripping with mockery.

"Elena, don't be mad. Bella ruined yours, so I'll just buy you a new veil, okay?

"Oh, and I forgot to tell you. We've slept on every inch of the floor in your new house.

"Your man is very…useful."

This was the man I had loved for seven years.

This was the price of giving up my pride, my ambitions, and my life; it was all for him.

Giovanni called again, his voice urgent.

"Baby, Lina has a fever. I just took her to the hospital. The wedding will have to be postponed again… Don't sulk. We'll do it another day. Be good…"

"Giovanni." I cut him off. My voice was cold, like the winter sea off Sicily.

"What is it?"

"That veil doesn't need replacing. Give it to Lina to be buried in. She deserves something that's filthy."

I hung up.

Then, I dialed a number I had not called since a violent argument seven years ago.

The call was answered after the very first ring. It was as if the person on the other end had been waiting in the dark for centuries.

"Rafael Bellini."

I spoke the name that made the entire mafia world tremble.

"Elena." His voice was deep, magnetic, and restrained. Yet, it sounded like it was burning beneath the surface. "So…you've changed your mind?"

"Does your proposal still stand?" I asked calmly.

A low, pleased laugh came through the line: unhurried, confident, and absolute.

"I've waited a long time to hear that. So, what are your terms?"

I looked at my pale reflection, at the fire blazing in my own eyes, and said each word clearly, "Giovanni destroyed my mother's veil. I want you to give me a crown."

Two seconds of silence.

Then he laughed, not politely, but with genuine delight.

"As you wish," he said softly. "My queen."

Finalizing the political marriage with Rafael took less than ten minutes.

The moment I hung up, my phone exploded with notifications.

Giovanni had called nearly 30 times. His last message could not hide his panic.

"What do you mean by this? Stop being childish! Answer the phone! Now!"

I scoffed and blocked him without hesitation.

As soon as I arrived at the airport, a new post from Giovanni popped up.

A photo of empty church pews. There was a caption accompanying it.

[Some people never learn how to wait or how to be considerate. Leave the safest harbor, and the storm outside won't show you mercy. Take care of yourself.]

The comments were full of sympathy for him and ridicule for me.

I snapped my SIM card in half.

Lifting the hem of my wedding dress, I boarded the plane, heading toward the wedding that truly belonged to me.

He stood in the doorway, so worn down he was barely recognizable. For a split second, I did not even realize who he was. However, I steadied myself quickly."How dare you come here?" I asked, my hand quietly sliding toward the phone on the bedside table. He let out a bitter laugh."I must be out of my mind…" His voice was hoarse. "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you. I just…I just…"He trailed off, his gaze tangled with regret and desperation.Impatient, I asked, "Just what?"He lifted his head, suddenly deadly serious."I love you, Elena. Even after you married someone else, I still love you."The little power I had left could've protected me long enough to escape to another country. But I couldn't accept it. I had to come find you."He took a step forward, hope burning in his eyes."Come with me. Let's start over.""Stop right there."My voice cut through him like a blade. Disgust filled my eyes."Start over? Who do you think you are?"You left me standing alone in that

When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.I opened my eyes to see my friend, Sophia Marino, peeling an apple beside me."You're awake?" She immediately helped me sit up. "If you'd slept any longer, Don Bellini and the young master might've blown all of Southern Italy to pieces.""That dramatic?" I took the apple from her and bit into it. A sharp ache near my collarbone made me frown."Let's talk about you first." Sophia checked my IV line. "Relax. The baby's fine. You fainted because your emotions spiked too hard."As for those two…" Her expression turned complicated. "I flew back the moment the family called me. While you were unconscious, no one could rein them in."I paused. "What happened?""That woman, Lina," Sophia said flatly. "Your son personally cut through both her legs.""That's impossible." I frowned. "He's still so young."Sophia looked at me strangely."Are you wearing some kind of permanent filter when it comes to Antonio? He didn't even ask your hus

Giovanni wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and forced himself to speak."Don Bellini, please allow me to explain. This is all a misunderstanding."There was a trace of bitterness in his voice, carefully concealed."As Elena's former fiancé, I was only concerned about how she's been living these past few years. I never expected things to spiral like this."Of all moments, this was the one time he should never have mentioned that former engagement in front of Rafael.Rafael wiped the blood splattered on his hand from the punch he had thrown and smiled."Is that so?" he said calmly. "Go on."I could hear the sharp crack of knuckles as his fist slowly tightened. However, Giovanni seemed encouraged by that smile. He straightened his back, emboldened."You must have heard how deeply Elena once loved me," he said. "I thought her return after seven years meant she'd lost her way. I only meant to advise her. If she'd listened, none of this misunderstanding would have happene

Rafael immediately summoned a doctor. Then, with extreme care, he lifted me and placed me on the central sofa: the seat of honor. Turning his back to me, he spoke to his son, his voice gentle in a way that was almost terrifying."Take care of your mother."The boy nodded at once, his small hand gripping my uninjured one tightly.Rafael then turned and walked, step by deliberate step, toward Giovanni and Lina, both of them drained of color.Giovanni forced himself forward, swallowing hard."Don Bellini, this is all a misunderstanding! I…I was only afraid someone would stain the honor of the Bellini name…"Bang!Rafael did not waste a single word. His fist slammed into Giovanni's face with merciless force.Giovanni was sent flying, his forehead cracking hard against the marble floor as he collapsed unconscious.A collective gasp rippled through the hall. For decades, no matter how deep family feuds ran, no Don had ever struck another Don in public. The Rossi underboss and sev

Mamma: that single word froze the entire hall.Every guest turned at once. The mafiosi who had been watching coldly just moments ago now wore expressions of pure shock.Lina had to clutch Giovanni's arm to keep from collapsing.I struggled to lift my head and saw my son, who was always so composed, in tears."Sweetheart…"Instinctively, I tried to wipe them away with the back of my uninjured hand."Your hand!"He caught my mangled one instead. His voice cracked."Who did this?"His other small hand moved on instinct, resting against the custom pistol at his waist. Before the last word left his mouth, the air in the banquet hall turned deadly still.Rafael stepped forward. That face, beautiful as a carved god, held no emotion at all.The crowd parted instantly. He stopped beside our son, his voice deep and calm."Antonio, step back."Antonio obeyed at once, retreating several steps. His gaze swept over Lina and Giovanni: cold and lethal.Bang!Rafael kicked the massiv

"Let go of me! Giovanni, you bastard!"I struggled violently, kicking and clawing.Lina rushed over. The two of them forced me into the back seat together. Duct tape was slapped hard over my mouth as my wrists and ankles were bound tightly."Mmm!"I glared at Giovanni, hatred blazing in my eyes.Lina took her time admiring my humiliation. Then, her gaze dropped to my finger."Tsk. Even if it's just a high-grade imitation, that's real gold." She laughed and ripped the ring straight off my finger."It's mine now. I'll melt it down later and make myself a new necklace, perfect to match my diamond bracelet."She deliberately lifted her wrist and shook it."Elena, does this bracelet look familiar? I made it from the decorations I tore off your veil."I stared at her, my eyes burning red. The image of my veil being defiled filled me with murderous fury.Catching my expression in the rearview mirror, Lina clutched her chest in exaggerated fear."Oh, dear! Don Rossi, I'm terrified!
