Chapter 7

Author: Blooms Off
After dropping the kids off at school, Neil drove straight to the office.

As he stepped through the front doors, his assistant, Jonathan Ritson, approached with a serious expression. "Mr. Hammond, we have an update. Washi Pharmaceuticals just changed its major shareholder."

Neil's expression shifted as he took the tablet Jonathan handed him.

The top headline on the financial morning news read: [Pharma Giant Washi Pharmaceuticals Sees Major Shakeup in Ownership! Former Chairman Jack Cartwright sold his 25% stake last night. The buyer remains undisclosed.]

Jonathan kept pace as Neil walked, briefing him, "From what I found, this mysterious buyer didn't just acquire Jack's shares. Over the past six months, they've quietly bought smaller stakes from minor shareholders. Altogether, they now hold over 50% of the company."

Over 50% meant that this investor had become the undisputed majority owner of Washi Pharmaceuticals.

Jonathan pushed up his glasses. "Mr. Hammond, Washi is one of our biggest strategic partners. Mrs. Hammond negotiated that deal five years ago, and it expired last month. We've been trying to renew, but they've been stalled. And now, with this new owner, we don't even know who they are."

Neil stepped into the elevator, his face darkened with tension in the reflective glass. "What about Jack? Has he said anything?"

Jonathan replied cautiously, "He took his whole family and flew out this morning. He's gone off the grid. The only one who might have his personal contact is Mrs. Hammond, but in her current condition…"

Neil's expression soured. He hadn't told anyone Arya had woken up, and he didn't plan to.

Washi Pharmaceuticals had chosen to partner with the Niall Group because of Arya. She had once saved Jack's wife's life. Grateful, Jack had agreed to give the Niall Group a chance. Even during Arya's pregnancy, she had worked under immense pressure to deliver an outstanding pharmaceutical R&D proposal that earned Jack's full respect and secured a five-year strategic agreement.

Neil's eyes turned cold, his voice icy. "So, without Arya, the Niall Group's finished? No matter what it takes, I want everything on Washi's new owner within three days."

"Yes, sir," Jonathan replied.

Neil swallowed his frustration and entered his office. As he opened the door, he saw Lindsay bent over his desk, tidying up.

She wore a fitted white pencil skirt. The way she leaned forward highlighted her curves.

Neil swallowed involuntarily and quickly looked away.

At the sound of his footsteps, Lindsay turned and gave him a sweet smile. "Good morning, Mr. Hammond."

Before Neil could respond, his phone rang. It was the villa's landline. He didn't need to check to know it was Arya.

Just the thought of her stirred his irritation, especially with Washi on his mind. He took a breath, adjusted his tone, and answered gently, "What's wrong, Ary?"

"I forgot to mention something," Arya said. "I want someone to clean up the garden a little. You don't mind, do you?"

Neil frowned slightly, already impatient. She probably meant pulling weeds.

That garden was full of tulips—flowers had Arya planted herself after he had once mentioned liking them. She had painstakingly worked on it, even injuring her hands, just to make it beautiful for him. His smile made it all worth it.

She wouldn't make any major changes. Her emotions revolved around him.

Neil wasn't unmoved. As a wife, Arya had been perfect. At work, she had helped him establish his foothold. At home, she had been completely devoted.

But to Neil, someone like Arya, so easily read and predictable, had grown unbearably boring.

"Whatever you want at home is fine," Neil said coolly. "I have to get back to work."

Right on cue, Lindsay approached in heels. "Mr. Hammond, the meeting is ready to start."

On the other end of the line, Arya heard Lindsay's overly delicate tone and let out a cold, silent laugh.

Neil had just arrived, and they were already cozy.

Arya said sweetly, "Alright then, I won't hold you up. Go ahead with your meeting."

Just as Neil was about to respond, a beep told him she had hung up.

For a moment, he was stunned.

Arya had hung up on him? She used to wait for him to hang up first.

"What is it, Mr. Hammond?" Lindsay asked, pulling him back.

She stood close, her petite face turned up in concern. The curve of her chest lightly grazed his arm, but Neil neither moved forward nor stepped back.

Lindsay smirked and gently smoothed the frown on his brow. "Was it something Arya said?"

It was Arya, but the reason sounded ridiculous, even to Neil. What could he say? That she had hung up first?

Something about Arya felt different.

Before he could brush Lindsay's hand away, someone pushed open the door behind them.

"Well, I hope I'm not interrupting," came a teasing male voice. "Sorry to spoil the moment."

Lindsay blushed and stepped back. "Seamus."

It was Seamus McCauley. The McCauleys and Hammonds had been close for generations. Seamus was not just Neil's childhood friend, but they had also been university roommates.

Once Lindsay left the room, Neil shot Seamus a disapproving look. "Do you have to say that?"

Seamus dropped lazily into a chair. "There's no one else around, and besides, that's what we always said in university."

Neil grabbed a folder and tossed it at him.

Seamus dodged easily, his playful tone fading. "Alright, let's get down to business. You've heard about the shakeup at Washi, right?"

"I have someone looking into the new owner now," Neil said, rubbing his temples.

Seamus leaned in, lowering his voice. "My old man mentioned something. The new boss at Washi… Odds are, it's someone from the Pearces."

At that name, Neil's face darkened.

Come Monday morning, Arya rode to work with Neil. Their driver had taken the day off, so Jonathan was filling in.When Jonathan saw Arya in her crisp professional outfit, a flicker of admiration passed through his eyes. He realized his gaze lingered too long, so he quickly looked away and opened the backseat door.During the drive, he remarked, "It's nice seeing you heading to work with Mr. Hammond again, Mrs. Hammond."Arya gave him a polite smile. "Mr. Ritson, let's stick with 'Ms. Songhurst' at work."The title "Mrs. Hammond" grated on her now. Only her work and competence gave her any real leverage.Neil, who had been quietly checking his emails, glanced over at Arya. Her makeup was light, her hair neatly swept up. She didn't look much different from five years ago, but something about her felt more captivating now than ever."Ary, you look beautiful today," he said quietly. He reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.She felt the warmth of his fingers

Arya pulled the research documents from the envelope. Under "supervising professor" was Chuck's sweeping, elegant signature—Chuck Toulson. The pages were yellowed with age.Back then, Chuck had planned to let her lead the project after graduation, giving her a chance to head her own team and complete the research. It was meant to be her first independent project. He believed in her talent so much that, with his recommendation, the Royal International Pharmaceutical Association would likely have admitted her as their youngest member ever.Seven years had passed, and she was only now opening the project again.Suddenly, she heard familiar footsteps outside. Neil was back.Arya's expression darkened. She stepped out of the room. Before she even saw him, she smelled alcohol and a woman's perfume on him.She frowned slightly."I went to a very important banquet tonight," Neil said, flopping onto the bed with an arm thrown over his forehead. He winced from the hangover. "Ary, make me

That night, Arya stayed up caring for Charlotte. She fed her the medicinal soup and kept wiping her down. The fever finally broke around 3:00 a.m., and some color returned to Charlotte's face.Arya checked her pulse. It was steady and normal. Only then did she allow herself to retreat to her room, drained.A glance at her phone showed a message from Neil, sent three hours earlier. He'd written that he was staying at the Hammond estate and wouldn't be coming home that night. She didn't bother replying.A friend request had come in two hours ago. The account had no profile photo, just the default gray silhouette. The username was Try.She paused, then remembered that Diane had mentioned she'd be setting up a new account and would add her later. This had to be her.Arya accepted the request.A message appeared immediately.Try: [Still not asleep?]Arya: [About to. You should rest too. Good night.]She added two heart-shaped emojis. The other side started typing but never sent a

"How could it be your fault?" Arya said gently, her eyes red. "Sweetheart, you're only five and just a few minutes older than Lottie. The fact that you can take care of yourself already makes you amazing. You're the best big brother in the whole wide world."Cradled in her arms, Christopher didn't know what to do. He tried to push her away, lifting his hands with uncertainty, but hesitated. Her embrace felt so warm.He caught the scent of her—soft and clean, not like perfume. He couldn't describe it, but it smelled comforting. How could someone even smell warm?"Chris, sweetheart, go eat first. Mommy will take care of Lottie," Arya said as she gently let go and stroked his cheek with a warm smile.Still a little worried, Christopher asked, "Are you sure we don't need to call Dr. Oxley?""No need. Mommy's a very good doctor as well," she replied with a tender smile. He met her eyes and couldn't bring himself to argue. He was getting pretty hungry anyway, so he turned and walked t

Malcolm sat in Washi Pharmaceuticals' lounge with the project proposal in hand. After waiting for three hours, his irritation was written all over his face. The polished black marble coffee table mirrored his scowl. His eyes were sharp with frustration and impatience. He might not have reached Neil's level of success in Amersol, but he was still a legitimate heir to a prestigious family. Even the mayor treated him with respect. This was the first time anyone had kept him waiting this long."Mr. Hammond, thank you for waiting." Samuel, impeccably dressed, approached with brisk steps and an apologetic smile. "Sorry for the delay. Mr. Pearce was in a meeting that ran long."Malcolm's demeanor changed at once."Not at all," he said, his tone now pleasant. "It's truly an honor that he's even willing to meet me."He stood, holding the proposal as if expecting to be ushered in.But Samuel gave another apologetic smile. "Actually, you can just leave the file with me. Mr. Pearce is exhau

Arya had never truly been a proper mother to her twins, not even for a single day. Now, all she wanted was to seize every moment to show her two precious children how much she loved them as their mother.Neil did not stop her. While Arya was halfway through preparing a healthy meal, two star chefs arrived, carrying the dishes Neil had ordered."Ary, I picked all your favorites," he said softly.Arya glanced at the plates. These were not her favorites—they were his. Before, she always put his preferences above her own. Not anymore.Still, she said nothing. After all, meals like this would be rare between them.As they sat down to eat, she felt his gaze on her from time to time, clearly wanting to speak. She waited.Neil finally asked, "Ary, did you research Alzheimer's back in university?""I did. Why?" Arya answered calmly."Since the Pearce family's second heir took over Washi Pharmaceuticals, Alzheimer's research has become their main focus," he explained, excitement eviden
