Chapter 146— HOW I survived

Victoria's POV

Diana was almost at the door when she stopped. She turned around and looked at me.

"Wait," she said. "You didn't finish your story. How did you survive? The car was on fire. You were trapped."

I looked at her from across the room. Part of me wanted to stop here. Some things are better left unsaid. But Father leaned forward in his chair.

"Victoria," he said quietly. "Perhaps another time."

I shook my head. "No, Father. She needs to know." I pointed to the chair Diana had just left. "Sit back down, Diana. This part of the story... it changed everything."

The rain kept hitting the windows as Diana came back and sat down. The fire was almost dead now, just red bits glowing. Half my face was in shadow as I started talking again.

"I remember the crash like it happened yesterday," I said. "The car went out of control. It flipped over once, then twice, then hit the metal barrier on the side of the road. Everything got quiet for a second. Then I smelled gas."

I stopped talking.
