Chapter 3

Author: Sweet Beet
I felt disgusted when I saw that. I quietly took back everything I had thought before.

It was no wonder a shop attendant like Chloe dared to act so shamelessly. These two were clearly in cahoots.

Felix gave her a lecherous smile. Then, he turned to look at me.

“Tiana, it’s true that Chloe handed you the scratch-off ticket. But it’s also true that you didn’t pay for it.

“Since my employee broke the rule, I’ll deal with her later. But a ticket that wasn’t paid for still belongs to the shop.”

I protested to the police officers righteously.

“Officers, you heard him! This is straight-up theft. They’re trying to steal my scratch-off ticket. Arrest them right now!”

Felix smiled and said boldly, “Tiana, the ownership of this scratch-off ticket is just a minor dispute between you and me.

“If you’re unhappy, you can sue me in court. But you can’t have me arrested over it.”

The two police officers frowned. Although they did not agree with him, they nodded helplessly.

“Ma’am, we really don’t have the authority to arrest him for this.

“I suggest you two try to work it out. You’ve known each other for years. Why take this all the way to court over one scratch-off ticket?”

Felix smiled triumphantly. Then, he pretended to be magnanimous again.

“With the officers putting it that way, I won’t be unreasonable. After 20% federal tax, the remaining amount would be eight hundred thousand dollars. You can take three hundred thousand dollars. Chloe and I will keep five hundred thousand dollars. Fair?”

The two police officers turned to ask for my opinion.

“Ma’am, if you think that this split is unfair, you can say so. If it’s really not what you had in mind, you can also file a lawsuit against him. We’ll record today’s events accurately to serve as evidence for you.

When I remained silent, Felix spoke up again.

“I’d take the deal if I were you. Sure, my employee broke the rules first, but you didn’t actually pay for the ticket. If this goes to court, it isn’t certain who’ll win.

“If I decide to drag this out for six months or a year, you could end up with nothing at all.”

I glanced at the time and did a quick calculation in my head. My people would be arriving soon.

I might as well let Felix and Chloe experience the taste of false hope first.

I nodded in agreement. “Fine. three hundred thousand dollars it is.”

Felix was barely able to contain his excitement.

“Words aren’t enough. Since both officers are here, let’s sign an agreement. Once we pay you three hundred thousand dollars, you’ll have nothing to do with the scratch-off ticket anymore.

“From now on, if you come to my shop demanding any more money from us, that’ll be seen as extortion.”

What perfect timing! That could not have worked out better.

With this agreement, I would have solid proof that their shop engaged in illegal practices and stole a customer’s money.

I nodded again.

Felix and Chloe’s smiles broadened. They hurried off to prepare the agreement.

The onlookers, however, spoke up. They all thought this deal was unfair.

“Are you serious? That’s one million dollars. After he gets his cut, you walk away with just three hundred thousand dollars! Did you actually agree to this rip-off deal?”

“Talk about fumbling a gift from above. If it were me, I’d fight him tooth and nail.”

“The bottom line is that you haven’t seen enough of the world. You were bought off for a measly three hundred thousand dollars.”

I acted as if I had not heard a word from the crowd. When Felix brought the agreement, I made sure to request two copies and sign them.

After that, Felix transferred three hundred thousand dollars to me in front of everyone.

After politely seeing the police off, he pulled Chloe into his arms and kissed her.

“Chloe, you’re really my good luck charm! With you around, I can’t help but get rich.”

Chloe leaned against him and whined, “Felix, don’t just say it. Out of five hundred thousand dollars, give me at least half.”

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. You won’t get shortchanged.”

After they fooled around for a bit, Chloe noticed that I was still standing in the shop. Her expression turned dark as she saw me.

“Hey, old lady! What are you still doing here? Take your money and get lost!”

Felix also glared at me.

“Let me tell you something. The deal is signed. Even if you change your mind now, it’s too late.”

I smiled and said, “I’m just waiting here to watch you two regret it.”

As soon as he finished speaking, two officials from the state lottery agency walked in.

“Mr. Perkins, you have been operating in violation of regulations. We are hereby confiscating your unlawful proceeds and revoking your shop’s license to sell scratch-off tickets.”

When Felix saw that Chloe was about to expose all his secrets, he slapped her across the face.“You trash! Say one more word, and I’ll beat you to death!”Chloe was stunned for a couple of seconds. After she regained her composure, she charged at Felix and grappled with him.“How dare you hit me?! After everything I’ve done for you! I’ll kill you.”Even though Felix was a useless drunkard, he was still stronger than her. Chloe was soon pinned to the floor. She was unable to move.I had Victor and Ernest step in to pull them apart. Then, I called the police.Once Chloe was free, she looked at Felix in pure hatred.“You want to play dirty? Fine! I’ll do the same.”She sent a series of intimate photos of herself and Felix to his wife.Felix’s wife rushed into the shop shortly after. She punched and kicked Felix furiously.“You trash! I’ve been married to you for over ten years! I had kids with you! And you’re out here cheating with this little witch?“What’s wrong with you? How

I looked at him with mocking amusement in my eyes.“Take a guess.”Calling for backup, only to realize the person being pleaded with was the very one meant to be reported…There was probably nothing more humiliating than that.Felix shook his head in disbelief.“No. This can’t be…”Chloe, who was behind him, pointed at me and said, “I got it. You all planned this ahead of time. They deliberately stole Ms. Lowes’s phone just to scare us.”Felix latched onto this like it was his last lifeline. He shouted, “That’s right! You’re just some lottery-addicted hag. There’s no way you are Ms. Lowes.”He pointed at Victor and Ernest. “You’ve got some nerve. How dare you steal Ms. Lowes’s phone? When she finds out, she’ll write all of you up and fire you!”Victor and Ernest looked at him like he was an idiot. Then, they slowly walked over to me.“This is Ms. Lowes. It’s pretty funny that you used her name to throw your weight around, but you don’t even know what she looks like.”Felix i

Victor and Ernest looked at each other. They glanced at me. They did not know how to answer.I did not want to put them in a difficult position. I stepped forward and said, “What does it matter if we know each other? If you weren’t so obsessed with money, cheating your customers, and running your shop illegally, why would you be afraid of an audit? How else would all these problems have come to light?”Felix acted as if he had caught us red-handed. He shouted, “Just as I thought! I noticed it the moment they walked in! They kept glancing over at you. I knew something shady was going on.“You’re the ones in cahoots. I’m reporting all of you. I’m calling Ms. Lowes to tell her that her own people are trying to team up with an outsider to blackmail me!”The onlookers watched how confident he seemed and could not help but feel worried.“It was no wonder Lucky Mart never got in trouble. I’ve called in complaints so many times, but nothing ever happened. It seems they have connections.”

The footage on the surveillance camera showed what had happened half an hour earlier.I had just walked into the shop when Chloe greeted me warmly.“Tiana, you’re here! Scratch-offs again today?”I smiled and nodded.Chloe took a brand-new stack of scratch-off tickets from the counter and handed them to me.“Tiana, go ahead and start scratching. If you need more, I’ll grab them for you. Same as always. Take your time scratching, then pay whenever you’re done.”Then, the footage showed me taking out a coin and scratching the tickets. But after only two tickets, I uncovered the million-dollar prize. After hearing my excited squeal, Chloe snatched the winning scratch-off ticket from my hand without a second word. Then, she claimed the ticket belonged to their shop because I had not paid for it yet.The video played through clearly to the end.Victor and Ernest looked at Felix with serious expressions.“I remember when you first opened this shop, we told you that you had to take

The two officials who showed up were Victor Fields and Ernest Upton. They walked over to greet me, but I shook my head slightly to tell them not to.Today was my day off. I did not want anyone to assume that I was abusing my position to pressure others. At this moment, I was just an ordinary person seeking to protect my rights.Faced with this situation, Felix did not panic. After a brief moment of stunned silence, he smiled at Victor and Ernest sycophantically.“I wonder which jealous trash is bitter about my business doing well and made a fake complaint.“Victor, Ernest, you guys know me. I’ve been running this shop by the book for years. I’ve never done anything illegal. Please do your investigation and then tell the higher-ups exactly how it went.”I laughed mockingly. “Felix, I’m still standing right here. How are you not sweating bullets right now?”Felix glared at me.“What are you laughing at? What’s it to you? We’re done here! The deal is signed in black and white. No

I retorted, “You’re the one lying and twisting things. I bought this scratch-off ticket fair and square from your shop. You saw me win and got greedy. After hanging up, I looked at the shop attendant, Chloe Byrne, and warned her again. “If you don’t give me that ticket right now, not only will you lose the prize, but your shop will also get shut down over this.”Chloe firmly held the ticket in her hand and said dismissively, “Honey, I wasn’t bo
