Chapter 1

Author: Anonymous
When I saw that marriage certificate, my first thought was maybe it was someone with the same name.

But then I saw the photos of them. The face on it, the one I'd spent five years with day and night, stared back at me.

I couldn't lie to myself anymore.

My boyfriend, Piero Conrad, was married to someone else, and his wife was his childhood friend, Vivian Brett.

The date on the certificate was May 20, three years ago. The hard reality hit me like a punch to the chest.

Tears fell onto my phone screen, unstoppable.

Piero and I had been together since college, five years in total. But three years ago, he married another woman.

He'd been lying to me for three whole years.

Every morning, he'd wrap his arms around my waist and give me a good-morning kiss.

He'd thoughtfully make breakfast and see me off to work. Therefore, even though he bailed on our six previous marriage registration plans with excuses, I never doubted him.

I trusted our love so much that I thought getting married was just a matter of time. There was no rush.

I never imagined the man who was so gentle with me was already someone else's husband.

I swallowed the bitterness and continued to watch the video.

It stretched as long as seven minutes.

Photo after photo showed Piero and Vivian's childhood bond, his sadness when Vivian went abroad at 18, and their rekindled romance when she returned three years ago.

It was a perfect love story of childhood sweethearts turning into a couple.

The video had a lot of views, and the comments were full of praise.

[Made me believe in love again.]

[Childhood sweethearts are the best.]

[The old girl beats the new one every time.]

[What a beautiful reunion! Wishing them all the happiness!]

The comments stung. I could hardly breathe.

If I weren't Piero's girlfriend and that new girl, I might have been moved by their story too.

As if possessed, I paused every photo and read the captions word for word.

[May 20, 2021, first thing after coming back home: I made the boy who used to follow me around my husband.]

In the photo, Piero and Vivian were cheek-to-cheek, holding up their marriage certificate. Piero's eyes were full of tenderness.

On that day, I waited three hours at the restaurant we'd booked, only to get a text from him saying he had to work late.

When he came home at midnight, I hugged him, feeling bad that he had to work so late.

Now I realized I was the pathetic one.

[December 31, 2021, chasing the Northern Lights with him.]

They kissed passionately, framed by the dreamy glow of the aurora.

I heard about Piero's recent life from other classmates. After that day, he and Vivian had a huge fight. He said he still loved me, wanted to divorce Vivian, and blamed her for keeping him from marrying me.Vivian was furious, blurting out that she never had cancer. It was all a lie to get him to marry her. When she went abroad and learned Piero was with me, she couldn't accept it. Knowing he'd liked her before, she crafted a lie, and it worked.Even that video was posted to make sure I'd see it.In fact, back when they got their marriage certificate, Piero told her to keep it secret from me.Thrilled, Vivian agreed without a second thought, thinking that would push me out of the picture. But three years later, Piero and I were still together.Unable to accept it, she posted the video online and sent me that taunting text to break us up.It worked, and I left Piero.Vivian was relieved, thinking Piero would stick with her forever. But when he heard I was back, he rushed to th

Even if Piero realized his mistake and wanted to divorce Vivian to win me back, I wouldn't go back. And I knew he'd never even consider it.Sure enough, his face twisted with conflict. "I..." "Alright," I cut him off. "No more explanations. I don't want to hear them, and I'm not getting back with you."He panicked, grabbing my hand. "But I only love you. Vivian is just a friend growing up with me.""Is that so? Then why did you kiss her? Is kissing a friend normal for you?" I asked the question I'd held back before.Piero kept claiming that Vivian was just a friend, but her video showed a different story. They took cozy cheek-to-cheek photos, kissed under the Northern Lights, and went on Valentine's Day dates. Those were things that only couples would do.Plus, over three years, Piero stood me up seven times, leaving me waiting alone at City Hall in vain.I couldn't help but wonder if he felt even the tiniest ounce of guilt while I waited eagerly to get the certificate with

Unwilling to give up, Piero tried to reach me through different numbers.Annoyed, I set my phone to reject unknown calls. Finally, some peace. The guesthouse was hiring volunteers, and I signed up to keep myself busy. For months, I only checked in with my parents and close friends, cutting off everyone else. Till an old classmate sent me a wedding invitation, I booked a flight back.At the wedding, tons of old classmates were there, catching up on old times.Someone brought up Piero. "You and Piero were so tight back then. Bet you're close to tying the knot now, huh?""Yeah. The next wedding we're attending might be yours," echoed another."By the way, why are you here alone? Where's Piero?" asked a third person.I'd only told my parents about the breakup, so no one else knew. This was a good chance to set the record straight and avoid misunderstandings."Piero and I broke up months ago," I replied.Right then, a male voice came from behind me. "We didn't break up."I turne

Memories full of lies didn't deserve to exist.I took off the engagement ring I'd worn for three years and left it on the coffee table. Then I dragged my suitcase out and shut the door. When Piero called, I'd just arrived at a guesthouse.Last year, I'd told him I wanted to visit a beautiful place. He had brushed it off, saying he was too busy. The same old excuse! But I didn't want to leave him or travel alone, so the plan got shelved. Now that we were done, I had no more worries. I booked a guesthouse online and flew over. The scenery was just as I'd imagined. Flowers were blooming everywhere, soothing my tired soul.I'd barely set down my bags to go explore when Piero called."Ida, where are you? Why is all your stuff gone? Our photos too?" he asked, his voice tinged with anger."We're done. Remember?" I replied indifferently.A young couple passed by.The girl was chattering with the guy. He held a camera, snapping photos of her bright smile. It reminded me of my first

Piero panicked. "Why? I only did it for Vivian's health. Is the certificate really that important? It's just a piece of paper. Love is all that matters."His tone turned accusatory, like I was making a fuss over nothing.I almost laughed at how absurd it was.My boyfriend of five years married another woman and lied to me. And he wanted me to accept it."You expect me to stay and be the other woman between you and Vivian?" I asked sharply.Piero's face darkened. "I've explained already. It was just to fulfill Vivian's wish. Why are you being so aggressive?"In our five years together, I rarely saw him look this upset. He used to brag about being the most patient boyfriend, and I hadn't argued about that. But now, he flipped out for Vivian.Maybe I just never touched his sore spot before. Vivian was that sore spot."Let me answer you something," I said. "If I told you to divorce Vivian, would you?"Piero froze, his face flushed with conflict. Then he replied firmly, "The docto

Piero's pupils shrank, and his body shook.I watched his reaction, my chest heavy, like a stone was crushing it.Five years of love were hard to let go of. I still clung to a shred of hope. Maybe it was Vivian's one-sided story; maybe the photos were fake. But Piero's reaction confirmed it. He and Vivian were married. He forced a stiff smile, his voice shaky. "What are you talking about? I..."I cut him off, pointing out, "You may not know, but you touch your earlobe when you lie."His hand hung in mid-air, then dropped as he tried to pull me close. "It's not what you think. I can explain."I pulled up the video and shoved it to his face. "This is why you bailed on me seven times, right?"I looked him in the eye. He held me, flustered. "I had my reasons."I waited for him to continue, curious about the reasons that had pushed him to marry Vivian behind my back and lie for three years."Three years ago, when Vivian came back, she gave me a diary full of things about me," he ex
