Chapter 7

Author: Wheat Grain
Kyle froze when he saw Elena hanging thirty feet in the air.

"Kyle. You made it."

Allison pointed up at Elena.

"I cut halfway through the rope. She's got maybe twenty minutes before it snaps."

Kyle's eyes went red.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Allison ignored the question and pointed to the old wooden crates piled in the corner.

"If you hurry, you might be able to stack those high enough to reach her.

"Oh, and we're in the middle of nowhere. Even the fastest ambulance is at least thirty minutes out."

Kyle clenched his fists until his knuckles cracked.

"You're insane!"

"I am insane."

Allison laughed, her eyes wilder than ever.

She walked toward the men and yanked open her collar.

"Don't you think I'm disgusting? Isn't this what you wanted? Me with another man's kid? Other men putting their hands on me?

"Then go ahead. Watch."

She pulled several pills from her pocket, swallowed them, then motioned for the men to do the same.

"If you leave, Elena dies."

Kyle's expression changed.

He didn't hesitate.

He rushed to the pile of crates and started moving them with his bare hands.

Minutes ticked by.

The drugs started kicking in.

Allison began tugging at her clothes, breathy moans slipping out.

The men's eyes glazed over as they slowly closed in on her.

Kyle suddenly froze, a crate still in his hands.

That was when he realized what Allison and the men had taken.

'Allison really has lost her mind!'

Just as one man was about to touch Allison, Kyle hurled the crate in his hands at him.

"Ah!" The man screamed as it struck him.

Kyle lunged forward, kicked the nearest guy away, and pulled Allison into his arms.

Barely conscious, she sagged against him, her fingers curling into his collar.

"Kyle... you still can't stand to see anything happen to me, can you?"

She smiled as tears slipped down her cheeks.

Kyle glanced at the men closing in, then up at Elena swaying thirty feet above the floor.

His face tightened, torn.

Allison was burning up in his arms, already starting to babble.

The men kept closing in, breathing hard, their eyes locked on her.

Kyle gritted his teeth and shouted up at Elena.

"Protect your head! From that height... the fall probably won't kill you!"

Then he carried Allison out of the warehouse without looking back.

Elena watched them disappear through the door.

The last bit of hope inside her shattered.

This was the third time.

The third time Kyle had chosen Allison and left Elena to live or die.

Her eyes burned, but no tears came.

The men below quickly recovered. With Allison gone, every one of them turned toward Elena.

They crowded beneath her, reaching up and yelling disgusting things.

Then some started stripping.

Above them, the rope began to fray.

Elena went cold.

Even if the fall didn't kill her, she knew what was waiting below.

For the first time, fear completely swallowed her.

There was nothing she could do.

She shut her eyes.

Snap!

The rope broke.

"Because you don't deserve a place in my life anymore."Kyle left in a daze.Outside, the rain had stopped. When Elena woke, Kyle was sitting beside her bed.The memories came rushing back, shattering three years of peace. Every moment from the past felt as vivid as yesterday."Elena, how are you—"He lit up when she woke, but the disgust in her eyes stopped him cold."Mr. Fenton, thank you for saving the community."Her voice held none of its old wariness. Just ice.Kyle felt like he'd been dropped into freezing water. His voice shook."Elena... you remember?"Elena looked away and said nothing.Kyle instinctively reached for her hand."I'm sorry. Let me explain..."Elena calmly pulled away, got out of bed, and walked out.Kyle's hand stayed suspended in the air. His throat tightened, panic and pain crushing his chest until he could barely breathe.Elena went to Ace's room and sat beside his bed, quietly holding his hand.Kyle followed and stopped outside the door. Then Ace woke.Elena immediately checked his vitals.Seeing the dark circles under her eyes, Ace lifted a hand

Kyle, who was helping nearby, saw a local man running toward him."Something happened! Mr. Ashford... he was crushed by a rock while saving someone!"Kyle's heart jumped. He gathered a few people and rushed over.Together, they worked to move the massive rock off Ace."Get a stretcher! Hurry!"They carefully lifted Ace onto it and rushed him back to the clinic.Elena froze when she saw him.Just moments ago, Ace had been talking to her.Now he was covered in blood."Ace!"She ran to him, fingers shaking as she checked his carotid pulse.There. A pulse. She forced herself to focus and checked him over."Multiple broken ribs. He needs surgery. Now."The room went dead quiet.Surgery? How the hell were they supposed to do that in a clinic that barely had basic supplies?Ace's breathing got weaker. Elena's voice cracked."I can't operate... We don't have the equipment, anesthesia, or blood. I can't save him..."Kyle looked at Elena's shaking figure, then at Ace's injuri

'Who was that woman?'Her head started throbbing again.Elena shook it off and pushed the thought away.Outside, the rain had turned brutal, hammering the windows like it might break through.Wind howled through the trees, branches snapping in the dark. The whole world seemed ready to collapse beneath the storm.Boom!Thunder cracked as lightning split the sky, briefly lighting up the steep cliffs beyond the community.Elena's heart jumped.Something felt wrong. Then the emergency PA system blared."Flash flood! Everyone evacuate! Get to higher ground!"Before the announcement even finished, the ground shook violently.Elena nearly lost her balance.Gripping the window frame, she watched a row of nearby houses collapse into the muddy flood and disappear."Elena!"The door flew open.Ace rushed in and grabbed her hand."Get to the clinic. Ace's expression didn't change, like he'd known all along."I... hurt her." The words barely came out. "Badly."But I love her. She's my wife."Ace gave a cold laugh.Just because he'd chosen to teach in a remote mountain community didn't mean he didn't have connections.Elena had told him she was happy with her life now, so he'd respected that and never dug into her past. But the second Kyle showed up, it was obvious. He knew Elena. And with Elena's nightmares getting worse since Kyle showed up, Ace needed to know who he was. That was how he learned what had happened three years ago.How Kyle had treated Elena like a replacement for his ex.How badly he'd hurt her.Ace wanted to beat the hell out of him.But for Elena's sake, he didn't.All she wanted was a quiet, normal life."Your wife?" Ace shot back. "That's how you treat your wife? Use her as a replacement? Leave her covered in scars?"Besides, Elena divorced you. You're nothing to her."Kyle froze.'How does so

Cold sweat soaked Elena's pajamas, leaving them clammy against her skin.A soft knock came at the door."Elena, you okay?"Ace.Elena pulled herself together, got out of bed, and opened the door.He stood there in his pajamas, holding a glass of warm water. Her nightmare must've woken him, and he'd come straight over."Another nightmare?"He handed her the glass.Elena wrapped her fingers around the warmth, and her racing thoughts slowly settled. She nodded.Ace didn't ask what she'd dreamed about. He just stayed beside her until she finished the water."If you can't sleep, I can stay and talk."With Ace there, the tension slowly left her body.Eventually, she fell asleep and slept peacefully until morning. After that night, the nightmares wouldn't leave her alone. They got clearer, but somehow more chaotic.Sometimes, a tall figure pinned her against a desk while tears of humiliation blurred her vision.Other times, men chased her through the dark as she ran for her
