Nepotism?

Tuesday morning finds everyone but Nadia gathered in the kitchen for breakfast. Caleb gives me an approving nod spotting the hoodie back on me. Lilith wrinkles her nose in obvious distaste while Jacob just smirks, thoroughly entertained.

"Seriously, that thing again?" Lilith complains. "Girl, why bury all that gorgeousness under something so hideous?"

"Enough, Lilith. Nothing wrong with it," Caleb snaps. She drops her gaze to her cereal, though I catch the sneaky eye-roll first.

The next several days find me back in the hoodie, constantly scanning for that golden god who's somehow taken over way too much real estate in my brain. Way too much. He's crowding out space I need for actual coursework, and apparently fixating on a golden-haired deity doesn't do wonders for retaining lecture material.

That look he gave me keeps replaying, movie-scene style, on constant loop in my head. Heart rate spikes, stomach flips, every single time it resurfaces.

Even sleep isn't safe. Dreams feature his fierce, stunning face turning toward me, pinning me in place with nothing but a look. I try running, but my legs feel weighted down, sluggish, like wading through quicksand while he closes the distance behind me. I jolt awake heart racing, only partially from fear, mostly pure adrenaline excitement. Some ridiculous part of me actually wants him catching me. Insane, right?

Strangely, he's nowhere to be found the entire time I'm hooded up. Tuesday, first day back in disguise, I swore I spotted him constantly, though admittedly I couldn't stop scanning crowds either. Every blond head sent my pulse racing. Thursday rolls around, still no sightings, and paranoia sets in hard. Trap theory starts forming. Friday brings doubt, maybe his attention was aimed elsewhere entirely. Weekend hits and I've talked myself into believing none of it was real. He wasn't actually looking at me like prey. Pure imagination. Why would he, realistically? Gorgeous girls practically fall over themselves for his attention constantly. Me specifically? Absurd thought.

Monday, fully convinced my brain staged the entire fantasy. Still, cowardice wins and I skip every class that day, including our shared one, just to be safe. We're allotted five skip days per semester and I'm burning through mine fast.

Tuesday morning arrives and enough's enough. No more skipping classes, and while hobo hoodie's earned my respect, love's a stretch too far. Eventually we part ways.

I leave my room in denim shorts (built for quick sprints if necessary), a candy-striped top in light blue, pink, and white, white Converse completing things. Hair loose today. The hoodie gets stuffed into my bag though, just as backup.

Caleb frowns at my outfit choice but stays silent.

"Skipping breakfast?" Lilith asks between cereal bites.

"No time today, running late." Need to catch the seven-thirty bus, plus stop by the library first for research materials before my nine o'clock class.

"I'm driving you," Caleb announces. Arguing's pointless, so I just follow along. Man makes an offer like that, you accept, otherwise he'll physically haul you into his car like cargo. Stubborn caveman werewolves.

=====≠=======≠======≠========≠======

Walking into Club Espresso Degree, campus's favorite coffee spot, puts an instant smile on my face. Coffee aroma mixed with fresh pastries, pure heaven. Just past ten, still fairly quiet inside. I always come straight here after first period, though normally I'm budget-conscious about visits. Skipped breakfast though, starving now. Spotting that help-wanted sign taped to the window practically has me bouncing in line while waiting on my order.

Working here would be perfect honestly. Food and I are basically soulmates already. This feels destined, fated even. Okay, mostly I'm just hyping myself up, standard procedure whenever food-service openings appear anywhere.

"Morning! What can I get started for you?" the counter girl asks. "Freya?"

"Harper!"

"Girl, where've you been hiding? Missed you in class yesterday," Harper exclaims, clearly thrilled. "Actually missing all week now that I think about it." Quick glance behind her, then leaning conspiratorially close. "Nolan's been asking about you nonstop." Mischief practically radiates from her expression.

"Yeah, just...busy lately." Busy avoiding the world, more like.

"Nol! Check who showed up!" she hollers backward before refocusing. "Anyway, what're you ordering?"

"Mango smoothie plus a toasted sesame bagel, cream cheese?" I request. "Oh, and that job posting in the window, I'm interested."

Her grin stretches wider instantly. "Nol, hear that? She's officially staff now," she announces while assembling my order.

Nolan's glasses-framed face pops up behind her. "Hey, Freya," he greets, pushing his glasses up while smoothing down his branded apron.

"Hey yourself." I grin back. He's barely taller than me, and that nervous, boyish smile makes him look impossibly young.

"Swing back around two. Owen, our manager, handles hiring. Quick form, couple questions, nothing major. Job's basically guaranteed already," Harper says, winking. "Owen's actually Nolan's cousin."

"Isn't that technically nepotism? Feels a little sketchy," I point out.

"Sweetie, worried about nepotism landing a smoothie-slinging gig? It's never what you know, always who you know," Harper replies, completely unbothered. "Besides, we're not exactly forcing his hand, just gently 'encouraging' the hire...unless tire-slashing becomes necessary."

I laugh it off, hoping desperately she's exaggerating.

"Owen's got a thing for pretty hires anyway. You're basically guaranteed," Nolan adds, then immediately looks horrified realizing what slipped out. His face floods red. "Not that, I mean, you ARE pretty, but that's not, I didn't mean..."

"Nolan, buddy, smooth as ever," Harper cracks up completely. "I officially surrender trying to help you."

"So, Freya Hayes..." he murmurs, like he's tasting the sound of it. The way my name slides off his tongue sends a shiver straight down my spine. I'd just finished signing the attendance sheet as it circulated, and apparently he's only now piecing together my full name. "Freya..." he repeats under his breath, then lets out a low chuckle. "The fvcking irony," he says. "Perfect." Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean? God, the man is exhausting! Is he mocking my name now? Because if so, I will happily gouge his eyes out with this pen. I mean it. I spin around and shoot him a look meant to promise violence, holding my pen up in a stabbing motion for emphasis. He laughs quietly, clearly delighted by my reaction. "Easy with the threats, sweetheart," he whispers, pitched just loud enough for me and every nosy student nearby to catch. "You're putting ideas in my head. Getting me worked up. Giving me all sorts of thoughts..." Oh my god. A strangled little sound, half squeak half whimpe

Freya's POVNobody's home when I get back, same as always. After showering, I throw on pajama pants and a tank top, then scrutinize myself in the mirror. There's zero chance anyone in this house misses that massive hickey on my neck. I'd been careful hiding it under my hair all day, but even Harper caught it. We were sipping smoothies at the cafe after my interview with Owen, the manager, when Harper cracked up and said, "Oh, boy, poor Nolan, he never stood a chance, huh?" Her eyes kept drifting to the bruise the entire time. Nolan had looked anywhere but at me, pretending he hadn't noticed or heard a word Harper said. It's impossible to miss, honestly. Caleb definitely won't be thrilled. He's ridiculously overprotective lately. I'm technically an adult, yet my cousin still treats me like some twelve-year-old.I refuse to hole up in my room avoiding everyone until this thing fades. I did enough hiding back at Night Shade Pack, and I despised every second of it.Ugh, fine, decision mad

  • From Pack Slave to Lycan Princess   Has Anyone Ever Died of Blue Balls?

I glance over my shoulder to watch her stomp away like a queen-child. She is fuming. Her hips sway as she walks away. It's not done intentionally or in an exaggerated way like some girls do either. That's just the way she walks and it's as sexy as fvck and I can't take my eyes off of her, damn it! I can't help the grin from forming on my face. I never had to work to get a girl before. This would be interesting. I live for challenges but I'll be damned if I have to wait for years, like the way Caspian waited for Livana before I claim my erasthai. I watch her disappear from view before I push myself off the wall to stalk back to where I left my bag. I weave through girls standing in front of my bag and books. "Julian, we can continue with our project in my room, if you want. We won't get interrupted there," says my project partner, Serena. "No, I have a class in ten minutes," I tell her as I sling my backpack over my shoulder. "What about later? I'm free the whole day." "I'm

  • From Pack Slave to Lycan Princess   Her Stubborness

Julian's POV The air crackles with electricity between us. The pull is intense. I fight for control but now, my vision is tinged red. My animal side is taking over. The thought of her with some other guy, even just for a simple lunch drives me crazy. Her hiding my mark on her, even a temporary one, just snaps off my control and my lycan takes over. I inhale her incredible, magical scent deeply to calm the beast in me. "Tell me you're not seeing anybody. Tell me there's no other man." She's mine. I can hear the thunderous drum of her heartbeat, the heated blood that rushes through her body, the ragged breathing that matches my own but she remains silent. It doesn't matter. She belongs to me. If there's another man staking a claim on her, I will crush him. I will destroy anything that comes between me and her. The graceful curve of her neck looks so tempting as I run my nose close to it and breathe in her scent deeply one more time. Her scent manages to calm me and excite me at

"I'm not going to tell you my name and I'm not going to show you anything that's mine." "Well...that's too bad, Princess," he says. "I want to see everything that's yours and it's hard to get to know each other if you won't tell me your name. It's going to take a while for us start making out, huh?" What the hell? I stop in my track and turn to look at him. He has that annoying smile that says he knows something that I don't. So very annoying. "Listen here bud, we're not ever going to be making out," I tell him. "Okay. Tomorrow then?" he says with that sexy stupid cocky grin. Ughh!!! I start walking again but I have this urge to stomp my feet like a five-year-old throwing a tantrum. "So....not tomorrow either? Is the next day okay?" I stop again and glare at him. Is he doing this just to annoy me? He bursts out laughing. I have to admit, the sound of his laughter almost makes me melt into a puddle at his feet. It's beautiful. Low and manly yet full of tempting naughtines

  • From Pack Slave to Lycan Princess   Species: Unknown

Werewolves generally have variants earthy smell of the forest. Living among them all my life makes me familiar with their scent. I can spot even the faintest of their scents anywhere. Even Nana had her own unique scent of the wild. The beautiful stranger whose hands are currently gripping my hips and whose lips and nose are firmly buried in my neck has a different kind of scent. It's definitely wild and it's something I'm not familiar with, mixed with the smell of an expensive cologne. He smells rich...and oh, so very good. Like catnip to cats, like crack cocaine to an addict, I can't resist burying my face into his soft silky golden hair, taking a long deep drag of his addictive scent into my starved, deprived lungs. The feel of his lips on my neck is sending bursts of electrical current to every cell and nerve ending in my body. I place my hands on his broad solid shoulders and succumb to the urge to plaster the front of my body to his until there is no part of the front of our bo
