View MoreShe couldn’t speak. He was angry. She watched his anger grow but yet no matter how she tried, her mouth wouldn’t open. “Don’t let me repeat my question” he said and she gulped loudly. “It’s….” She stammered “It’s nothing. I fell down recently” she laughed awkwardly “I’ve got two left legs sadly” He didn’t laugh. He just kept staring at her. He knew she was lying but that was all she could give him. How could she open her mouth to say it was her step mother, Lila that hit her just because he had chosen her to be his mate instead of her stepsister, Lydia? It would infuriate him and he honestly didn’t look like someone that one would want to infuriate whether at themselves or at others. She dreaded what he would do to her for lying to him but the next words that left his mouth, stunned her “You need a bath” he said, changing the topic and Jenny almost sighed in relief. She looked down on herself, suddenly self conscious “Yes, I do need a bath” Agreeing with him while also cursin
Jenny’s POV Immediately we entered the gates, I felt it. It could have gone unnoticed if I wasn’t so sensitive to people’s feelings. Perks of being a healer. I felt people’s energy sometimes and while I hated it most times, it helped me on some occasions. Around the town, conversations seemed to quiet down as people turned to stare at us. There were no malicious looks but they were obviously intrigued about our appearance for some reason. Henry, they knew of course so it was me that was the odd one to them. I sat straighter on the horse. Painfully aware of every eyes on me. “Why is everyone looking at me?” I asked Henry in a low tone, like I didn’t want anyone else to hear me. Henry gave me a small smile of encouragement, “Just ignore them and they’ll mind their business” “That’s not really the answer to my question, you know.” “Yes it’s not” he sighed “ I should assume it’s because you’re after all the Alpha’s chosen and naturally, it’s expected for the people to be curio
Jenny watched the first light of morning crawl through the tiny window. She hadn’t slept. Even for a minute. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard Lila’s voice again. He breaks people like you to pieces. Then Henry’s. Some of them might be true. That was somehow worse than anything Lila had ever told her since she met her. If Henry had simply told her Maurice was a monster, she would have believed him. Monsters were easier to understand because you knew what to expect from them. It was the uncertainty that bothered her and Jenny hated uncertainty. She preferred knowing exactly how badly someone could hurt her. A knock came at the door, “Miss Maychild?” Henry’s voice called out She looked down at herself. The clothes he’d brought her were folded neatly on the mat. A simple dark dress, thick enough for the early morning cold, with a pair of boots that looked almost new. Almost. Nothing about her life was ever completely new. “Come in.” Henry opened the door and sto
"You stupidass girl” The slap came out of nowhere, snapping Jenny’s head to the side and sending stars exploding across her vision. She stumbled backward, tasting blood where her teeth had cut the inside of her cheek. Lila stood over her, trembling with rage. "Do you have any idea what you've done? Alpha Maurice could have chosen any woman in this pack.. Any woman-and instead he chose you. A nobody. A servant. A bloody Maychild” Jenny didn't respond. What could she possibly say? She hadn't asked for this. She hadn't done anything except exist-and apparently, that was crime enough. "My daughter was supposed to be chosen," Lila hissed. "My Lydia. She's beautiful, well-bred, worthy. And instead, that monster picked you." She grabbed her hair and yanked her head back, forcing their eyes to meet. "What did you do? Did you spread your legs for him? Bewitch him somehow?" "I didn't do anything," Jenny said, barely audible. "Liar!" Another slap, this one hard enough to split her l
