LOGINI sink down against our front door, back pressed to the wood. Heartbeat gradually slowing toward something resembling normal...mostly.
I keep knocking my skull backward against the door repeatedly. Eyes shut, replaying that intense stare that pinned me in place. Those eyes. My heart absolutely hammering. He looked utterly transfixed, and somehow I couldn't tear my own gaze away either. Frozen there by the lecture hall entrance, completely trapped. Forgot entirely how breathing or movement worked. Everything else simply dissolved. Just the two of us existing. No clue how long that lasted before someone crashed into me from behind, snapping the spell. That predatory hunger etched across his gorgeous face triggered pure fight-or-flight instinct. Flight won easily. I spun around and bolted like something demonic was chasing me. I can vaguely recall the journey back here. Remember sprinting blindly, disappearing into a crowd of students funneling into some lecture hall. The crowd just swallowed me whole and carried me along. In one door, out another. Legs pumping. Pumping harder. Hopping on a bus. Trudging the rest of the way home on foot, and now here I sit, trying to untangle what the hell just happened back there. Did it even happen? Why would it happen? Was that really him chasing after me, or did I just imagine footsteps behind me? What did I just walk into? What did I even do? Great, I completely missed class. I park myself on the front step for a good long while. Just sitting. Just thinking. Thinking has never been my strong suit, honestly. Once my pulse and breathing finally settle back down, I push myself up and let myself inside. Jacob's sprawled at home, working through a sandwich while some youtube clip plays on his phone. "What're you doing back already?" he asks, clearly caught off guard. "Don't you have somewhere to be?" "Uh...ditched today," I admit. "Sick or something?" "Not feeling great." Sure, we'll go with that. Really I'm a jumbled mess, half-breathless, heart doing weird things, somewhere between thrilled and terrified. Close enough to "not feeling great," right? "You ditched the hoodie too," he notices. "Oh look, another genius observation," I say. "Another what?" "Captain Obvious, reporting for duty." "That's me," he confirms, sounding weirdly pleased about it. "Hey, real question, Jacob. What's the hoodie actually do? Does it smell bad to you guys too, or just humans?" "Doesn't affect me at all. It's for whoever's wearing it. And no, it's not pleasant. Obviously." "Obviously." Eye roll. "So what exactly does it do for the wearer?" "Masks your scent," he explains. "Makes you read as an Omega. Boring, harmless, completely beneath notice. And here's the thing, the stronger the werewolf, the more invisible you become to them. An Alpha probably wouldn't even register you exist." Huh. Didn't see that coming. I sit with that information a moment, and suddenly hobo hoodie's earning a lot more respect from me, stench included. "So how'd Caleb end up with it?" "Beats me," he shrugs, returning to his sandwich. "Why're you even home right now?" I ask, steering us elsewhere. "Client meeting at noon. Figured I'd eat here first." Hold up. "Client? What exactly is it you do, Jacob?" "Real estate," he says. Seriously??? "What's that face for?" he asks, catching my stunned expression. He's dressed sharp, crisp white shirt, pressed slacks, but I genuinely could not have guessed real estate in a hundred years. "Wow, that expression's kind of offensive," he says between bites. "Bruising your delicate ego over here?" "Deeply wounded, yes." "How long you been doing this?" "This 'gig,'" he mutters, chewing. "Not long. Pretty new, actually." "So what does Caleb do, then?" I ask, genuinely curious. "No clue. Guy's basically a locked vault, not exactly chatty. Gives off major Alpha energy even though his old man was apparently just a Beta. Most people wouldn't dare talk to him the way you do," he says. "Day one you showed up, he warned me he'd end my future kids if I so much as looked at you wrong. Not that you're not gorgeous, because you are, but I like having kids someday." Ahh, so Caleb was behind that after all. "So what's the video, anyway?" I nod toward his phone. "Cats being idiots. Hilarious stuff. Join me? Few more minutes left." "Sure," I say. "Also, wow, that's a serious sandwich stockpile. Nana always said sharing's basically a love language." "Noted." "So...sharing?" "Absolutely not. Get your own.""So, Freya Hayes..." he murmurs, like he's tasting the sound of it. The way my name slides off his tongue sends a shiver straight down my spine. I'd just finished signing the attendance sheet as it circulated, and apparently he's only now piecing together my full name. "Freya..." he repeats under his breath, then lets out a low chuckle. "The fvcking irony," he says. "Perfect." Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean? God, the man is exhausting! Is he mocking my name now? Because if so, I will happily gouge his eyes out with this pen. I mean it. I spin around and shoot him a look meant to promise violence, holding my pen up in a stabbing motion for emphasis. He laughs quietly, clearly delighted by my reaction. "Easy with the threats, sweetheart," he whispers, pitched just loud enough for me and every nosy student nearby to catch. "You're putting ideas in my head. Getting me worked up. Giving me all sorts of thoughts..." Oh my god. A strangled little sound, half squeak half whimpe
Freya's POVNobody's home when I get back, same as always. After showering, I throw on pajama pants and a tank top, then scrutinize myself in the mirror. There's zero chance anyone in this house misses that massive hickey on my neck. I'd been careful hiding it under my hair all day, but even Harper caught it. We were sipping smoothies at the cafe after my interview with Owen, the manager, when Harper cracked up and said, "Oh, boy, poor Nolan, he never stood a chance, huh?" Her eyes kept drifting to the bruise the entire time. Nolan had looked anywhere but at me, pretending he hadn't noticed or heard a word Harper said. It's impossible to miss, honestly. Caleb definitely won't be thrilled. He's ridiculously overprotective lately. I'm technically an adult, yet my cousin still treats me like some twelve-year-old.I refuse to hole up in my room avoiding everyone until this thing fades. I did enough hiding back at Night Shade Pack, and I despised every second of it.Ugh, fine, decision mad
I glance over my shoulder to watch her stomp away like a queen-child. She is fuming. Her hips sway as she walks away. It's not done intentionally or in an exaggerated way like some girls do either. That's just the way she walks and it's as sexy as fvck and I can't take my eyes off of her, damn it! I can't help the grin from forming on my face. I never had to work to get a girl before. This would be interesting. I live for challenges but I'll be damned if I have to wait for years, like the way Caspian waited for Livana before I claim my erasthai. I watch her disappear from view before I push myself off the wall to stalk back to where I left my bag. I weave through girls standing in front of my bag and books. "Julian, we can continue with our project in my room, if you want. We won't get interrupted there," says my project partner, Serena. "No, I have a class in ten minutes," I tell her as I sling my backpack over my shoulder. "What about later? I'm free the whole day." "I'm
Julian's POV The air crackles with electricity between us. The pull is intense. I fight for control but now, my vision is tinged red. My animal side is taking over. The thought of her with some other guy, even just for a simple lunch drives me crazy. Her hiding my mark on her, even a temporary one, just snaps off my control and my lycan takes over. I inhale her incredible, magical scent deeply to calm the beast in me. "Tell me you're not seeing anybody. Tell me there's no other man." She's mine. I can hear the thunderous drum of her heartbeat, the heated blood that rushes through her body, the ragged breathing that matches my own but she remains silent. It doesn't matter. She belongs to me. If there's another man staking a claim on her, I will crush him. I will destroy anything that comes between me and her. The graceful curve of her neck looks so tempting as I run my nose close to it and breathe in her scent deeply one more time. Her scent manages to calm me and excite me at
"I'm not going to tell you my name and I'm not going to show you anything that's mine." "Well...that's too bad, Princess," he says. "I want to see everything that's yours and it's hard to get to know each other if you won't tell me your name. It's going to take a while for us start making out, huh?" What the hell? I stop in my track and turn to look at him. He has that annoying smile that says he knows something that I don't. So very annoying. "Listen here bud, we're not ever going to be making out," I tell him. "Okay. Tomorrow then?" he says with that sexy stupid cocky grin. Ughh!!! I start walking again but I have this urge to stomp my feet like a five-year-old throwing a tantrum. "So....not tomorrow either? Is the next day okay?" I stop again and glare at him. Is he doing this just to annoy me? He bursts out laughing. I have to admit, the sound of his laughter almost makes me melt into a puddle at his feet. It's beautiful. Low and manly yet full of tempting naughtines
Werewolves generally have variants earthy smell of the forest. Living among them all my life makes me familiar with their scent. I can spot even the faintest of their scents anywhere. Even Nana had her own unique scent of the wild. The beautiful stranger whose hands are currently gripping my hips and whose lips and nose are firmly buried in my neck has a different kind of scent. It's definitely wild and it's something I'm not familiar with, mixed with the smell of an expensive cologne. He smells rich...and oh, so very good. Like catnip to cats, like crack cocaine to an addict, I can't resist burying my face into his soft silky golden hair, taking a long deep drag of his addictive scent into my starved, deprived lungs. The feel of his lips on my neck is sending bursts of electrical current to every cell and nerve ending in my body. I place my hands on his broad solid shoulders and succumb to the urge to plaster the front of my body to his until there is no part of the front of our bo
