Chapter 1

"Babe, Faye's got that soft, charming personality clients love. Everyone says work feels easier when she's around. If we fire her, can you really handle keeping the clients happy with that tough-girl attitude of yours?"

Perry Anderson's words sent a chill straight through me. Something dull seemed to be sawing back and forth across my chest.

Back when Perry was just a broke nobody, I had ignored my billionaire father's objections and married him anyway.

My mother passed away when I was young. My father raised me like I was his whole world, training me to be a real high-society daughter. Music, art, etiquette, cooking, I mastered all of it.

But for Perry, I traded my heels for flats and ran myself ragged, chasing investors and pulling in clients. All he had to do was stay in the lab and focus on his robotics research.

He used to hold my hand and promise, "You've stood by me while I built my future. I'll give you the world in return."

But the moment his company went public, everything changed.

Faye Dawson had nothing but a pretty face and a sweet mouth, yet he placed her in the most important position in the company, as if she were some kind of treasure.

Meanwhile, I spent every day cleaning up her messes, smiling through clenched teeth as I patched things up with clients she offended with her fake charm.

Those clients only held back because of my father's influence and the connections I built over the years.

But in Perry's eyes, all of that credit went to Faye.

To him, the company could survive without me but not without her.

I let out a sharp laugh, the anger I had been holding in finally breaking loose.

"Perry, do you really think going public means you're untouchable now? Do you have any idea how competitive the market is? Clients want professionalism and sincerity, not some assistant twisting in weird angles and batting her eyes like that's going to seal a deal."

Perry frowned, irritation clear in his eyes.

"What era are you living in? Your mindset is outdated, Wanda. These days, it's all about emotional value."

The moment he said that, Faye jumped in, draping herself over his arm like she didn't have a spine.

"He's right. I'm young and pretty, and I know how to read people. Clients love me. Unlike you, always so serious, scaring everyone away."

She even winked her carefully made-up eyes at me, smug as could be.

Perry reached up and gently patted her head, his voice soft as if he were soothing a child.

"You're the best."

Then he turned to me, his expression hardening, his tone turning cold and condescending.

"You should learn from Faye. Stop acting like you're always ready to pick a fight."

Learn from her?

What, learn to call my husband "Cocoa"? Learn to pose and flirt in front of clients?

The thought made my stomach turn.

Whatever warmth I still felt for him shattered completely in that moment.

Fine.

Looking at the two of them, I suddenly felt nothing at all.

"Alright," I said, slow and clear. "If Faye's so amazing, then let's get divorced. I'm done being the CEO's wife."

Perry froze for a second, then let out a mocking laugh, as if I had just told the funniest joke in the world. He looked me up and down with pure contempt, completely certain of himself.

"Fine. Let's divorce. I'd like to see how long a useless country girl like you lasts without me."

Faye's face went pale at my words. She collapsed on the floor, her crying turning sharper, almost hysterical. My father didn't even spare her a glance. He simply spoke to Jenson beside me, his tone calm."Jenson, call the police. Tell them there's suspected embezzlement and large-scale commercial fraud. Have them take her in as well and look into everything properly."Faye's sobbing cut off instantly, as if someone had grabbed her by the throat. She jerked her head up, her carefully made-up face filled with shock and disbelief. Then her eyes rolled back, and she dropped straight toward my father's feet.Trying to fake it, huh? Before she could even touch the hem of his pants, one of the bodyguards behind him reacted instantly. He grabbed her like she weighed nothing and dragged her out. With that nuisance gone, all attention returned to Perry, standing alone on the stage. He was finished. His eyes were empty, his face drained of all color.Camera flashes exploded again, nonst

My father had arrived. He ignored every stunned stare in the room and walked straight through the crowd toward me.His steps were steady and unhurried, each one landing like it weighed on Perry's chest. The bodyguards who had been closing in on me just seconds ago instinctively backed off, giving him a clear path without even realizing it.He stopped in front of me.The eyes that had always held warmth when he looked at me were now filled with pain and tightly restrained anger. He lifted his hand, his rough fingertips brushing lightly across my cheek. His voice came out low and slightly hoarse from holding everything back."Sweetheart, you've been through too much."It was such a simple sentence, but it shattered everything I had been holding together. From the moment I chose divorce, to setting this trap, to standing here surrounded without flinching, I had kept myself tight, controlled, and unbreakable. But under his gaze, that last thread snapped.Tears rushed up without w

Faye didn't want to go down. Her mind, built on nothing but money and vanity from that socialite training program, twisted under pressure. In that moment of pure fear, something ugly and vicious broke through. She clutched Perry's arm so tightly that her nails nearly dug through his suit. Leaning close to his ear, she whispered to him in a shaky, frantic voice. "Cocoa, don't panic. No matter how powerful her family is, this is still our territory. Listen to me. If we just… If we lock her up first, make it so she can't talk for now, then once we clean up this mess, everything will be fine."Her voice dropped lower, turning more desperate and unhinged."By then, what can her family really do to us? They care about their reputation, too."Those words were like a match striking dry wood.Perry had nothing left to lose. What was there to be afraid of anymore?Right. He still had a chance. He suddenly looked up, his eyes blazing with the reckless madness of someone who had already

The moment Perry shouted, the laughter died. The entire room went quiet. Every gaze shifted back to me, sizing me up, weighing whether what he said could be true.I laughed so hard that my eyes started to sting. Then I walked straight up to him and stopped, meeting his bloodshot eyes, still burning with anger and panic."Ordinary?" I echoed softly. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried clearly through the silent hall. "Did it ever occur to you that a family who can casually afford Belmont University's tuition might not be all that ordinary?"His expression froze. The fury drained out of his eyes, replaced by fear, which was creeping in slowly and heavily. It was as if he was finally replaying all the details he had ignored for years: the designer pieces I had casually tossed into the walk-in closet. The family estate I had mentioned in passing, the one he had always brushed off as exaggeration. The life I had lived for over 20 years, one he had never really seen but had alw

The next second, Perry completely lost it.He pointed straight at Jenson, his voice sharp and almost distorted."Who the hell are you? You think you can just walk in here and put on a show? If you're trying to scam someone, at least pick the right place!"Then he turned to me, his tone dripping with accusation."Wanda, just to get out of taking the blame for sabotage, you really went all out. Where did you even find this guy? He's convincing, I'll give him that. He almost had me fooled."He looked around, then barked at another assistant standing nearby."Go! Find out who the real executive assistant from Black Group is! I don't believe for a second they'd send someone like this to handle business with me."Faye was clearly on the same wavelength as him. Not only did she fail to see anything wrong, but she also stepped forward and looked at me with what she thought was clever sympathy."Honestly, aren't you scared? If the real Black Group finds out, you could be in serious trou

Soon, the delivery inspection began. Jenson didn't even bother lifting his gaze. He simply reached out with a gloved hand and lightly ran his fingers across the surface of one of the robot shells.Beneath the glossy paint, the uneven texture showed through immediately."Mr. Anderson, the quality of this batch seems quite different from the sample."The smile on Perry's face froze. He rushed forward, staring at the flaws in disbelief. How could this happen?Clinging to the last shred of composure, he forced out through gritted teeth, "So you're just giving up the deposit?"Only then did Jenson look up. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes cold and unreadable."You might want to ask Ms. Dawson about that. She said Black Group and Anderson Corporation are friends, and that friends don't need deposits."Perry whipped his head toward Faye, his expression filled with accusation.Faye flinched, then quickly grabbed his sleeve, her voice turning soft and teary."Cocoa… I w
