Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
To pacify the angry public, the hospital held a special briefing session for the Fletchers. The intention was to explain the standard procedure for the hospital's patient intake process, but Tina invited a bunch of reporters to attend the session, with Mindy sitting by her side.

Mindy looked very pale, and her wrist had a thick bandage around it. I glanced at her and looked away.

Before I got on stage, I went to the hospital's archives and retrieved all the old files from fifteen years ago. Meanwhile, I received news from the police that some of my bullies from years ago had handed over an audio recording because their conscience had pricked them.

It was a recording of Tina when she stood at the lectern and said, "There must be a reason that you're targeted by your classmates. Why would they choose to bully you and not someone else?"

I downloaded the recording. "Because what comes round will come round."

The briefing session started, and Gavin stepped onto the stage to explain that the hospital does not condone any doctor's behavior of refusing patients. He clarified that I had applied to be recused from the patient's case in accordance with procedure, and the hospital has reached out to other teams.

However, the reporters refused to accept the explanation.

"This is clearly a case of a doctor refusing a patient. Why can't the hospital or doctor explain the reason?"

"The patient is in serious condition and might encounter life-threatening danger while waiting for the other team to respond. Who will take responsibility when that happens?"

"Is Dr. Shaw undermining the patient's family just because she's a famous doctor?"

Tina suddenly stood up. She held the microphone and choked back a sob. "I don't understand all this professional jargon. All I know is that my daughter is fighting with death for more time. I'm begging you as a mother, Dr. Shaw, to help save Mindy no matter how much you hate me."

Lowered discussions could be heard coming from below the stage as cameras pointed in my direction. Everyone was waiting for me to give in, but I turned on my laptop to display the first picture. It was of a young girl covered in wounds.

The briefing room fell silent, and I said, "The girl in the picture is called Carla Shaw. Fifteen years ago, she was bullied by her entire school just because she came from a poor family."

Tina's expression fell apart as she stood up right away. "Why are you showing this picture? What does this have to do with my daughter's condition?!"

The second image I displayed was the injury assessment, which stated that the girl had a cut on her temple and suffered from a soft tissue contusion. The last image was the medical report diagnosing the girl with severe depression and suicidal tendencies.

There were also records of her being admitted to the hospital for a suicide attempt, a letter proving her leave of absence from school.

I displayed one record after the other, and Tina's voice started trembling. "It's not true. It's all fake! What are you trying to do?!"

That was when I finally looked at her. "Don't be anxious, Madam Fletcher. I'm not done yet."

The audio recording appeared on the big screen. "There must be a reason that you're targeted by your classmates. Why would they choose to bully you and not someone else?"

Everyone fell silent in the briefing session, and the reporters holding up their microphones while questioning me froze on the spot. Tina suddenly dashed to the stage. "Turn it off! Turn everything off!"

The security guards tried to stop her as she struggled. Her hair was a mess, and she no longer looked like the dignified educator she portrayed herself to be. "This is slander! What can an audio recording prove?"

I clicked on the next slide, which displayed statements from my old classmates. Someone wrote: [We pour buckets of water on her. Ms. Fletcher saw us do it but did nothing about it.]

[Ms. Fletcher told us not to play with people like her.]

Screenshot after screenshot of texts were displayed.

In the end, I showed her a picture of myself.

"Madam Fletcher, you claim not to know who I am, but fifteen years ago, you said this in public, and it prompted a young girl to jump off a building." I stood under the spotlight and stared right at her. "But she didn't die. She climbed out of the hospital bed to crawl her way inch by inch out of the dark abyss, and she is now standing right in front of you as your daughter's only cure."

I looked at her. "Now, do you know why I had to recuse myself?"

Tina's lips were trembling, and there was finally a look of fear in her eyes.

When I returned to the hospital, I started a charity project focused on helping bullied children, especially those who had been pushed to the brink by the words, 'figure out what you did wrong'.The charity was called 'It's not your fault', and many people attended on the day it was launched. Among them were some of my old classmates. They said that they wanted to apologize to me in person, but I did not see all of them.Late apologies were just like the wind too. Once they blew over, they were gone, but I accepted their gesture because I knew that some children out there needed to know that it was not their fault. The first batch of volunteers for this charity had psychologists, teachers, and parents, and we went to numerous schools to tell the children that it was not their fault for being bullied. We also educated the teachers to stop telling bullied children that it takes two for a fight to start.Once, when I was giving a talk at a high school, a teacher talked to me in privat

Tina was eventually terminated from her school. According to the education board, she had committed moral misconduct as a teacher, and the honor given to her as 'Teacher of Excellence' was rescinded. There was a commotion in the internet community over the news, but I did not pay much attention to it. Justice that came too late was just like the wind. Once it blew over, it would disappear. What was really left behind was the scarring from the wounds.Mindy was transferred to a new school, and Emery's team's intervention was working on her. She started attending proper therapy sessions and was making new friends. She was smiling more and had begun to truly believe that it was not her fault that she was bullied.I had done everything I could, and Mindy had to walk the rest of the way by herself. One day, Elaine asked, "Do you regret it, Dr. Shaw? Do you regret not getting into the university you wanted and ending up taking the difficult path?"I gave her question some thought. "No.

It was a gloomy day when Tina came to see me. She had lost a lot of weight, and her hair was no longer tidy as before. "Nora."I was sitting behind my desk and did not respond to her. When she walked into my office, she was clutching a bag strap. "I've been suspended because the school said there was an issue with moral misconduct on my part. I might lose my job.""Why are you telling me this?" I asked as I looked at her.Tina suddenly started crying. "Mindy is still in the hospital, and she refuses to eat anything. The doctors say that she is in critical condition. I'm begging you to please save her."I looked at her. "I'll help her. I've already referred her to Emery Crane's team. Mindy will be treated very soon."Tina was taken aback. "What about you? Why can't you treat her personally? You're the best in the field."I shook my head. "I can't take her as my patient.""Why not?""Because you're the person who hurt me all those years ago."Tina turned pale. "I know I was wron

Mindy was wearing a hospital gown when she met me. Her wrist was covered in bandages, and she looked worse than she did in the video clip. "Dr. Shaw."I nodded. "Have a seat."She smiled bitterly. "I've never been able to stand well, anyway."I did not laugh at her self-deprecating joke. She clenched her fingers and was silent for a long time before asking, "Can I ask you a question?""Go ahead.""Do you hate me as well because of the kind of person my mother is?"I looked at her. "No, I don't. I don't hate you."Mindy looked like she was about to cry, but she did not make a sound. "Okay."The room fell silent. Outside the window was the hospital's garden, and the holly in the garden had been nicely trimmed. Someone passed by slowly while dragging along their IV drip.Mindy lowered her head and said, "When I was young, my mom used to tell me that the proudest achievement in her life was becoming a teacher. She said that all her students were the most obedient and followed the

After the briefing session ended, there was a reversal of public opinion. Netizens were quick to find out that Tina had always been an 'excellent teacher' at key high schools, and she loved saying, "There must be a reason that you're targeted by your classmates."Someone found several of her old students and left an anonymous post online. [Carla Shaw was not the only student she had destroyed with her words. There was a girl in our class who never came back to school after she was told that she was 'not good enough'. That's not being strict with her students. [That's just plain murder. None of us dared say a thing back then, but we can finally say it now. I'm glad she is finally facing the music now.]The words were so scathing that even a public relations professional could not smooth this over. What was even worse was Tina's texts in the parents' group chats, which had leaked as well. She texted: [Some parents are just too sensitive. All it takes is a few words from their chi

The briefing room was in chaos as the camera lights flashed crazily. The microphones that the reporters were planning to point at me were now pointed at Tina. "Madam Fletcher, can you confirm that the person in the audio recording was you?""Did you really say those words to a student who had been hurt?""Were you aware that Carla Shaw was being bullied?""Did you silently consent to the bullying back then?"Tina was flabbergasted by all the questioning. The tears on her face had not dried, but her carefully maintained soft expression fell apart. "It wasn't me. I never said anything like that. It was taken out of context."She suddenly looked at me and cried, "Nora Shaw, I did all that for your own good. You came from a poor family and had a loner's personality. I just wanted you to break out of your shell."Everyone looked hesitant when she said those words.Tina knew how to cry, and she knew when to deny the truth and display vulnerability. She even knew how to package herse
