Just then, an old wolf with a white beard and hair pushed through the crowd.

He pointed at Ethan. "Well now, Ethan, my boy, what's wrong with your new mate here? Why is she on the ground? Her aura's so unsteady."

Listen. New mate. How ironic.

Ethan’s eyes lit up when he saw him, like he’d found a lifeline. He rushed over and pulled the elder to Amber's side.

"Elder Grey, quickly, look at Amber!" he urged. "She was hit by the backlash from a vicious curse my ex-mate cast. Her heart's weak, her soul's been shaken, and she fainted!"

This Elder Grey seemed to know some old pack healing arts. He knelt, carefully checked Amber, even sniffed her aura.

Then he looked puzzled. "Strange. This she-wolf's breathing and pulse seem fairly stable. Her soul-flame is a bit dim, but it doesn't look like a soul-shock. More like… she’s faking it."

Ethan glared at him, his tone disrespectful. "Elder Grey, I thought you were a respected elder, that's why I asked for your help."
