Chapter 2

Author: Big Stick
The title read, "Mass Casualty at the Test Site. 43 Confirmed Dead at Redmont High School".

The article was published 30 minutes ago.

My fingers began to tremble. I scrolled down, but the crime scene photos were heavily blurred, showing nothing more than yellow police tape and white body bags.

43 people.

Excluding me, there were exactly 43 people in that room.

"How…" My voice seized up, barely a whisper. "How did they die?"

Isaac said nothing. He reached for my phone and pressed the power button. Then he rolled down the window and hurled it outside.

"What are you doing?" I yelled.

"That thing can track us through phones," Isaac replied. "From now on, no phones."

I stared him down. "How do you know all this? What the hell are we running from?"

Isaac went quiet for a few seconds before speaking up. "I can't tell you. You'll understand once we reach Mount Aethel."

"What?"

"I can't say it out loud." He turned to me, his eyes full of conflicted emotion. "You have to figure it out yourself."

"Figure what out?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

The low-fuel warning light buzzed to life on the dashboard.

Swearing under his breath, Isaac pulled the SUV into a roadside gas station. "I'm grabbing food and water. Stay in the car. Don't step foot outside."

He opened the car door, then glanced back at me. "No matter who knocks, do not open the door."

The station was lit by a yellow glow that cast long shadows across the convenience store front.

As I watched his retreating back, a knot of dread tightened in my gut.

Before Isaac threw my phone away, I hadn't even checked if my parents had messaged me. If they realized I was missing, they'd be out of their minds with worry.

Two minutes later, something rapped against the window.

I jerked my head toward the noise.

Another Isaac was standing outside, his pale face reflected in the glass. "Trevon… get out of the car, quick!"

His uniform was stained and torn. "The guy who was driving is a fake! I've been tailing you two this whole way just to catch up!"

What?

My heart hammered against my ribs.

He looked frantic. "Come with me! It's coming back! Did it throw your phone away? Everyone's looking for you—"

"Don't move!"

The other Isaac stepped into the yellow light with a plastic bag in hand. "Trevon! Don't open the door! Don't listen to a single word he says!"

My mind reeled. The two Isaacs had the same voice, identical faces, and even the exact same manner of speaking I remembered.

"Trevon!" The Isaac outside the window yanked out a phone. "Look! Your parents have been calling me nonstop! They can't get hold of you! We need to go!"

I glanced at his screen. Missed calls from "Mr. Pace" and "Mrs. Pace" glowed bright red, timestamped around the time I got into the SUV.

"I'll go with you. Just tell me what our secret phrase is," I said.

The figure behind the glass froze. The panic melted off its face, replaced by a slow, grotesque smile.

"Damn it. So close."

Terror spiked through me. I lunged into the driver's seat and slammed the gas pedal to the floor in reverse.

The SUV bucked with a heavy thud as it ran over the thing standing by the door. I jerked the wheel, whipping the car around to pull up right beside the real Isaac.

Isaac jumped into the car with a plastic bag in hand, still shaken.

Cold sweat poured down my neck. I felt like throwing up.

What the hell was that thing? How did it look exactly like Isaac?

The engine roared as I floored it out of the gas station. I caught a glimpse of the rearview mirror.

The other Isaac was sprawled on the pavement, its bones snapping and popping as if being dismantled and reassembled.

Drenched in dark blood, it pushed itself up joint by joint. Its head twisted a full 180 degrees to lock its gaze onto me.

I slammed my foot down even harder.

Beside me, the real Isaac was breathing heavily, clutching his arm. In my mad dash to hit the gas, he had barely made it inside before the car took off.

"What was that thing?" My voice shook violently.

"I can't say," Isaac replied. "But it can take the form of anyone."

"Anyone?"

"Anyone." He glanced at me. "Your parents, me, yourself, anyone you trust."

My hands were slippery with sweat on the steering wheel.

We drove straight to the train station.

Since our driving route was already compromised, we had no choice but to ditch the car and take the train.

The waiting hall was mostly empty. Isaac and I crouched in a quiet corner, scanning every face that passed by.

Dad, Mom, the students from the exam hall, the proctor, and even the torch-bearing crowd from the foot of the mountain all stood there, their eyes hollow and their faces twisted into the same uncanny grin."Look," the old priest rasped. "They are all me now. You strike me down, and every last one of them dies with me."I tightened my grip on Aegis Blade. The golden light surged outward but halted the moment it reached the figures.I couldn't bring myself to do it."Trevon." Orikiel's voice cut in. "It's lying to you."I looked up at him."Gathason can't possess that many vessels all at once," he said. "It's just banking on you hesitating."The old priest's expression instantly soured. "You—"Orikiel raised the thunderbolt scepter high and brought it crashing down right on top of the old priest. The impact sent a violent wave of golden light detonating outward. The shadowy figures dissolved into thin air, leaving only the old priest standing. The moment the thunderbolt scepter

I watched Dad swing the wooden stick, his movement stretching out like a frame-by-frame freeze.I saw Isaac standing tall in front of me, the wound on his back bleeding out drop by drop.I saw the black threads oozing through the cracks in the door, inching forward. And then I saw it—the maintenance room in the tunnel from that day.Mom crouched before me, gently cupping my face, while Dad stood nearby with a shovel in hand. Across from us, Isaac slumped against the wall, one hand pressed over his wound. All three of them opened their mouths at the same time, speaking a single sentence to me.I couldn't hear it that day. All I could hear was a chaotic wall of noise. But now, I heard every word.Aegis Blade surged forward, sweeping past my face. Aegis Wisdom Blade could cut through ignorance, shattering the veil of delusion.Their three voices fused into a crystal-clear choir. "You are the reincarnated Saint!"Suddenly, a burst of golden light erupted from Aegis Blade once mor

When I followed Isaac out, my feet hit the ground on shaky legs. The crowd parted on its own, carving out a pathway leading straight to the summit. At the end of the road stood a chapel named Aegon Chapel.I took a single step forward.Every single one of those duplicates turned their heads in unison and stared at me. All those hundreds of eyes looked identical to mine. The sight was utterly eerie."Don't look at them," a voice called out from beyond the crowd.I looked up.An old priest stepped through the crowd in a gray habit, a cross hanging around his neck.I recognized him. 12 years ago, on the slopes behind Mount Aethel, he had gifted me that little wooden sword. As he raised his cross, a dense web of golden light spread over the creatures blocking the path, drawing a chorus of agonized shrieks."Father—""Get inside! Hurry!" he cut me off, looking behind me. "This won't hold them for long! Move!"We bolted up the mountain path. The crowd didn't give chase. They si

The aircraft shuddered violently as every cabin light snapped off, leaving only the sickly glow of emergency lighting.I slammed my fists against the door in a frenzy. "Mom! Mom!"Inside, the lavatory fell dead silent for a second. Then, Mom's voice drifted out, trembling on the edge of tears. "Trevon, it's Mom. Open the door, sweetie. Let me out…"My hand froze in midair. It was the same voice Mom used to coax me to open the door whenever I woke crying from nightmares as a child.Exactly the same—the same tone, the same pauses, and even the same upward lilt at the end."Trevon, I made your favorite honey-glazed ribs. Can you open the door for me?"A cold shudder ran through me.When I was seven, I had locked myself in my room and refused to come out. Mom had stood outside the door with a plate in her hands, saying those exact words. That was 14 years ago. How could she possibly still remember?"Don't open it!" Dad's voice cracked with strain. "Trevon, that's not your mom an

"Don't turn around," Isaac whispered suddenly. "Listen to me. Whatever happens next, do not panic."My heart instantly shot into my throat. "What's wrong?""The cockpit door," Isaac said, barely venting the words through gritted teeth. "It just opened."I tilted my head, catching a glimpse out of the corner of my eye toward the flight deck. The cabin door was sealed, and the red light was glowing. Everything seemed normal. But I remembered the captain and first officer had entered the cockpit from the jet bridge before takeoff. The door closed behind them and never opened again. If it had just opened…"Ladies and gentlemen," the overhead speaker chimed to life, carrying the captain's voice, "we have a special announcement."Passengers throughout the cabin raised their heads, looking up toward the overhead monitors. The screens flickered on.It wasn't the flight tracker or the safety video. It was a face. A face twisted into an unnatural grin."We have a very special passenge

Mount Aethel. It all started at Mount Aethel. Whether it was the relentless hunt or this whole nightmare, the source and the only solution lay on that mountain. After waiting for a while, the noise outside died down completely. Isaac eased the door open, checked the corridor, and ushered us out of the maintenance room."We don't have much time," he muttered. "They're closing in. Our only option now is to fly."Half an hour later, with Dad pushing us to hurry, we rushed through the terminal and finally made it to the airport.I never imagined I'd be standing in a departure hall, listening to news that the very train we were supposed to board had just derailed. The loud audio from someone's phone drifted over to me. A middle-aged man in a floral shirt stared at his screen, where a blood-red headline screamed, "Mount Aethel Line Derailment. All Passengers Confirmed Dead, Investigation Underway."I froze.Isaac's back was still bleeding through his shirt, Dad's face was completely d
