Chapter 4

Author: Violet Bolt
"You'll be the child's mother from then on, and the three of us can live as a family," Michael said.

I agreed out loud and went along with what he said, deliberately putting on an act of being deeply moved.

After the call ended, I immediately opened the home surveillance feed.

On the screen, Michael had his arm around Natalie, his tone tinged with smugness. "Don't worry. Josephine's taken care of. Once the baby's born, I'll bring up the divorce. A childless woman like her won't be in a position to compete with you over anything."

Laura sat to the side, smiling broadly as she handed Natalie some supplements. "Michael knows what he's doing. As long as she stays quiet for now, she won't cause trouble and affect your pregnancy. Natalie, have some supplements. This child has to be born strong."

Watching this "harmonious" scene, I laughed until I nearly doubled over.

With Natalie's condition, they were still talking as if a smooth pregnancy were a given. If she could even make it to delivery, that alone would be miraculous.

The three of them were eating and living together every day without any precautions at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Michael and Laura were already infected.

Sure enough, just a few days later, Michael called again. This time, the panic in his voice was unmistakable.

"Josephine, something's wrong with Mom. She's had a high fever for days, and her body's covered in rashes. I haven't been sleeping or eating either. Everything hurts."

Resisting the urge to smile, I kept my voice calm and deliberately gentle. "Darling, the temperature's been dropping lately. It could just be the flu or some kind of viral infection.

"Take care of Mom for now. Once I'm done here, I'll book a flight back. If you need medication, I'll help get it from the hospital when I return."

"Alright… Hurry back," he said, his voice already weak.

After hanging up, I booked my next destination.

I stalled for several more days after that. Michael kept calling nonstop until I was so annoyed that I blocked him.

That was when his assistant reached me instead, his voice clearly shaken. "Mrs. Collins, Mr. Collins collapsed in the conference room today and was rushed to the hospital!

"And Ms. Laura was admitted to the ICU yesterday. The doctors say she's experiencing multi-organ failure and may not have much time left."

Hearing this, I knew the timing had come.

I booked the earliest flight and flew back overnight.

When I arrived at the hospital, the attending doctor asked to speak with me alone and handed me a thick stack of reports, his expression grave.

"Ms. Schofield, as a family member, it would be more appropriate for you to explain this to your husband."

He paused before continuing, his gaze filled with sympathy, "Mr. Collins and his mother's blood test results are back. The situation is extremely complicated. They're currently infected with more than 20 infectious pathogens, including HIV and syphilis. I strongly recommend that you also get tested."

I nodded and took the reports, my expression neutral. "I understand. Thank you."

After changing into protective gear and putting on a mask and goggles, I entered Michael's isolation ward.

He lay on the hospital bed, his face ashen and gaunt. There was an IV in the back of his hand, and monitoring equipment surrounded him.

When he saw how I was dressed, confusion flickered across his face before giving way to fear. "Honey, what exactly is wrong with me? Is it serious? The doctor hasn't told me anything. Did you see my mom? How is she doing?"

I didn't answer. I simply sat down by the bed and pulled out the reports.

"Michael, what makes you think you still get to say things like that to me? And what gave you the idea that I should stand by you after everything you've done?" I asked.A bright red handprint bloomed across his face, and he stood there in a daze."Being around you disgusts me," I continued. "Every extra day I stayed was something I forced myself to endure."With each sentence, the color drained further from his face, and the light in his eyes faded little by little.I pulled a thick stack of documents from my bag and held them up. "Everything you did during our marriage, the affairs, the money you secretly funneled to other women, and the fact that you hid a serious infectious disease from me, has already been submitted to the court. I trust that justice will be served."With that, I didn't spare him another glance. I straightened my back and walked out of the venue.A few days later, the divorce ruling was issued, and the process went through with unusual speed.Michael left

At that point, there was nothing left for Michael to argue. In the days that followed, the company came under relentless public scrutiny. Michael dared not go outside and shut himself in his room, refusing to eat or drink, the light completely drained from his eyes.He was surrounded by nothing but despair.I thought for a moment and continued to soothe him, "Darling, things have already gotten to this point. Since we can't hide it anymore, maybe we should switch strategies."He looked at me blankly.I spoke gently, guiding him along. "In a few days, hold a press conference and say someone intentionally infected you. Make public what Natalie did to you. At least that way, you might regain some sympathy, and it would also explain why you were infected with so many different viruses."…A few days later, Michael held a press conference.I attended with him, dressed impeccably.Following the script we'd agreed on, he tearfully accused Natalie of deliberately approaching him, expl

Michael was deeply moved. He held me tightly as he sobbed uncontrollably. What he never realized was that I had never wanted him to die. What I wanted was for him to experience despair first, then be handed a sliver of hope that looked real enough to believe in, and finally cling to that hope as he slipped, step by step, into a place he could never crawl out of.…Half a year later, Michael's condition had largely stabilized. His viral load had been suppressed to an extremely low level, and the risk of transmission had become negligible. Even so, I remained careful, going in for regular checkups and making sure nothing was left to chance. After he was discharged, Michael slowly tried to return to normal life and began taking over company matters again. To the outside world, we maintained a single explanation, saying that he had taken six months off due to burnout.Life gradually settled back into order, and the tension he'd been feeling finally eased. It was as if everything t

I crouched down and gently patted his back, my voice soft. "Darling, don't be afraid. Mom was older, and her body wasn't strong to begin with. Once she got that sick, she couldn't hold on."But you're different. You're still young, and you're in good shape. As long as you cooperate with the treatment plan and take your medication on time, you'll gradually recover."When he kept trembling, unable to speak, I went on reassuringly, "Besides, AIDS isn't what it used to be. It's no longer an automatic death sentence. It's a chronic illness that needs long-term management."As long as your viral load is controlled and your immune system holds, you can live just like a normal person. In fact, living into your 70s or 80s won't be a problem."At last, a glimmer of hope appeared in Michael's terrified eyes. He grabbed my hand tightly, his voice hoarse and broken. "Really? Honey, you're not lying to me, are you? Will I actually survive this?""Of course."I held his ice-cold hand, my gaze s

Michael stared at the reports for a long time. After scanning the dense list of diagnoses again, he let out a sudden, incredulous laugh. "Honey, how could you joke at a time like this? How could I possibly be infected with so many viruses at once? Syphilis, AIDS, and even hepatitis B. This is ridiculous!"I put on a worried expression. "I thought the hospital had made a mistake, too, but…"Michael flinched. "But what?""But Mom's infected as well," I said, sighing. "Besides HIV and syphilis, she tested positive for almost every virus that can be spread through saliva."He froze for a moment before vehemently shaking his head. "That's impossible! We've always paid attention to hygiene, and we eat at home all the time. How could this happen?"As he spoke, his expression stiffened, as though a thought had suddenly crossed his mind. The color drained from his face as he stared at me. "Is it… Natalie?" he asked, his voice trembling.I nodded."I already had someone look into her
