Chapter 2

Author: Frostea
To prove that my future self was lying, and that Sarah would never change, I deliberately sat on the steps beside the school field after class that afternoon and made a childish request.

"I'm craving cinnamon rolls from that shop in Southside, Sarah."

The shop I was referring to was three blocks away from our school, and there was always a long line. However, Sarah didn't hesitate. She shoved her backpack into my arms and affectionately ruffled my hair.

"Stay right here. Your girlfriend is going to get those cinnamon rolls for you! I'll make sure you get to eat them while they're still hot!" she declared.

As she took off running, the hem of her school uniform flapped in the wind. Seeing her earnestly run off to get me what I wanted made me tear up.

40 minutes later, she came back, drenched in sweat. Clutching a box of cinnamon rolls protectively, she fed me a piece and said, "Here—eat it while it's still warm. I kept the box tucked under my jacket on my way back so they wouldn't get cold."

The cinnamon rolls were still warm. Sarah was smiling brightly at me as she waited for me to compliment her.

I opened my mouth and took a bite. The dessert tasted incredibly sweet.

My doubts finally disappeared. Turning toward the man who was floating in midair, I gave him a smug look and spat, "Did you see that? She ran three whole blocks just to get these for me. She'd never think my requests are too much trouble, and she'd never call me high-maintenance, either."

The man stared at me without saying a single word. Moments later, he let out a small sigh.

"You tried to convince yourself in the same way back then. You kept lying to yourself even after she abandoned you at your birthday party and dashed out to look for Kayden. You told yourself she was only trying to help someone in need, and that she had a kind heart."

"Just shut up," I cut him off impatiently. "You're just jealous of me. Sarah promised that she'd never treat anyone else the same way she treats me."

The man drifted closer until he was standing right in front of me.

"Let's make a bet then. We'll give it a month. Even if her feelings waver slightly, you'll have to listen to me and leave her."

I took another bite of my cinnamon roll. "Fine! Once you lose, get the hell out of here and stop badmouthing my relationship!"

…

The next day, our homeroom teacher brought a new student into the class.

"This is your new classmate, Kayden Smith," she declared. "Please give him a warm welcome."

Kayden stood at the front of the classroom with his head lowered, nervously fidgeting with his fingers.

He had fair skin and a slender build. His school uniform looked incredibly faded, and the edges of his shoes were coming apart. He looked awkward and painfully self-conscious.

Sarah was our class president. So, she knew what was going on with every student in our class. After speaking to our homeroom teacher, she learned that Kayden came from a poor background, and his family was drowning in debt. To pay for his tuition, his father even nearly had his legs broken.

Once Sarah found out about this, she decided to help him apply for the school's financial aid program.

"You have no idea how much he's been through, Elliot. He's just a student, but his health is poor, and he's carrying so much on his shoulders.

"As the class president, I can't just stand by and do nothing when I'm aware of his situation, right? I should help him wherever I can. Don't you agree?"

After class that afternoon, Sarah placed the financial-aid application on Kayden's desk. She had deliberately waited until the classroom was empty between periods so he wouldn't feel embarrassed.

"Fill this out as soon as you can, Kayden. Feel free to approach me if you have any questions," she told him.

From two rows of tables away, I watched Kayden's face turn bright red.

"Thank you… Thank you, Sarah," he replied, his voice barely a whisper.

Sarah flashed him a smile. "Don't mention it."

For the rest of the day, Kayden stayed hunched over his desk, filling out the application. Now and then, he'd carefully glance back toward our seat.

I knew that he was looking at Sarah.

When Sarah sensed his eyes on her, she'd look up and glance in his direction. Then, he'd quickly lower his head again before blushing profusely.

"See? Lending someone a helping hand does make a difference," Sarah said, with a chuckle. "Kayden looks a lot more outgoing than he was the day he joined our class. At the very least, he's mustered up the courage to look at others."

I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

I didn't dislike Kayden just because he was another guy. If anything, I felt sorry for him. However, I didn't want to lose to him either.

Sarah slapped Kayden hard across the face, splitting his lip and causing him to bleed from the corner of his mouth."Shut up! Get out! Just get out!" Sarah roared hysterically. "You're still trying to win it all back? Your whole family is insane!"Then, the two of them started wrestling in the middle of the banquet hall. It was extremely unpleasant to watch. With a wave of my hand, I signaled for security to remove them from the premises. The moment the door closed behind them, I heard Sarah screaming desperately."I regret everything, Elliot! I truly do!"Floating beside me, Eli said softly, "It's over."He was right—everything was over. That ridiculous chapter of my youth had finally ended. That night, I had a long, long dream. In my dream, Eli and I were at an amusement park. It was the place I'd wanted to visit the most when I was a kid. According to Eli, Sarah had promised to bring me here. However, she broke her promise so she could accompany Kayden to the hospital.Eli

"I didn't do it on purpose. How was I supposed to know that there'd be traffic?" Next to her, Kayden protested softly.Sarah suddenly looked up and shoved Kayden hard. "Get out! Just get out!" she screamed. "You're a jinx, Kayden Smith! You ruined my life!"She had finally realized the truth. But unfortunately for her, it was far too late. She had already destroyed her future.…On the day our results were released, my entire family was gathered around the computer. Dad's hands were trembling, and he seemed more nervous than he'd been when he proposed to my mother."It's okay if you didn't do well in your exams, Elliot. I will take care of you for the rest of your life. No—your mom and I will take care of you for the rest of your life."I took a deep breath and refreshed the webpage. "Your ranking is within the top 50 in the state. Detailed results will be available on the 27th.""You did it, son!" Dad screamed in joy. He was so excited that he nearly knocked the compute

"Do you think everyone else will foot the bill for your family's greed as long as you act pitiful enough?" I sneered.Sarah stiffened. When she noticed that Kayden was avoiding her gaze, she already knew the truth. She simply refused to accept it.If she did, then everything she'd ever done for him would become a joke—including the 50 thousand dollars she had borrowed from me."Shut up, Elliot! I won't let you slander Kayden!" she shouted, her voice trembling. "He's such a kind person. How could he have lied to me? You're just bitter because you can't stand that I'm helping him!"With a look of disdain, Eli waved his hand dismissively. "Ugh. You can't talk sense into someone who's in denial."I shook my head and signaled for my driver to drive off. "If you don't have the money, call the police. You could also ask your precious Kayden to keep the debt collectors company. Coming to me won't do you any good."With that, I rolled up the window and didn't spare her another glance. In

"Why?" I asked."In a few months, the government will announce plans to build a high-speed rail station and a huge tech park. Property prices will shoot up tenfold," Eli replied. My family had amassed our fortune in real estate, and lately, Mom had been concerned that there were no good new projects around.Come to think of it, my tendency to lose all rationality when I was in love was probably something I inherited from my dad, Elijah Sutton. He spoiled Mom rotten, and he only loved me because I was her son. Sometimes, I even felt like he saw me as a third wheel who'd compete with him for her attention. At dinner that evening, Dad was eagerly peeling shrimp for Mom when I casually mentioned, "Dad, I think that piece of land on the west side of the city looks pretty good. The scenery's nice. Mom likes gardening, right? There's plenty of space out there. It'll be perfect for her."The moment Dad heard that, his eyes lit up. Turning to my mom, Mary Ziegler, he asked, "What do you

Sarah was pouring water for Kayden from an insulated bottle. The moment he saw me walk in, Kayden hurriedly took off the windbreaker. "Please don't get the wrong idea, Elliot. Sarah lent it to me because I was cold."Sarah pushed his hand down and frowned at me. "Why are you taking it off? You're prone to falling ill. Keep it on," she told him. Then, she turned to me. "Welcome back. Are you feeling better? Kayden hasn't even had breakfast because he wanted to wait for you. This jacket was a birthday gift you gave me, and I just lent it to him. You don't mind, right?"I walked to my desk, set my bag down, and pulled out a stack of practice exams. Not bothering to look up, I replied, "Not at all. It's just an old jacket someone else has already worn. Only a junk collector would be interested in it."Sarah shot to her feet and slammed her hand on top of the desk. "Elliot! What the hell is wrong with you?" she snapped. "You have never spoken to me this way before! When did you bec

By the time my driver found me, I was curled up behind a dumpster with a high fever and barely conscious. The fever kept me unconscious for three whole days. While I was unconscious, my dreams were filled with images of blood and the wrecked body of my future self lying in the snow. When I finally woke up, the man who had been hovering around me was floating by the window, staring at the rain. The moment he noticed that I had regained consciousness, he drifted over to me."Are you awake?"I stared at the ceiling, feeling numb."Yeah. I am."I'd regained consciousness, and my mind had cleared up too.I'd mentally buried the foolish, naive, lovesick version of myself, and the price I had to pay was 50 thousand dollars."Since you didn't die, it's time to live differently." He pointed at the ginormous pile of practice tests piled on my desk. "You've got one month left until the college entrance exam. If you don't want to repeat the same mistakes, get out of bed and study."I for
