Chapter 5

Author: Frostea
Kayden let out a terrified scream and threw himself into Sarah's arms.

Sarah's eyes were bloodshot as she yelled, "Don't touch him! I'll sign it! I'll sign it right now!"

I watched the thug bring the knife down to Kayden's hand. Ultimately, I couldn't bring myself to stand by and watch.

"Charge it to my card. Let them go," I declared.

The leader of the group checked if I had enough money to cover the debt. Then, he whistled and patted Sarah on the cheek. "You're one lucky woman. You've got a man who's willing to spend money on you. Next time, don't come to a place like this and act like you're some kind of big shot. There's nothing wrong with relying on a man."

I leaned against the wall, feeling completely drained. I waited for Sarah to come over and thank me—or at least, flash me an apologetic look. But to my dismay, she didn't pay me any attention.

All of a sudden, Kayden clutched his chest and went limp.

"Kayden! What's wrong? You're scaring me!"

Color drained from Sarah's face. She hoisted him onto her back and rushed outside in a panic.

"Sarah, wait! We can't get a cab from here," I called after her.

We were deep in the city's slums, and the streets were filled with all kinds of shady people. To make matters worse, even the streetlights in the area were broken.

Sarah stopped dead in her tracks. Then, she turned around and yelled, "Don't follow us! You were so aggressive just now that you scared Kayden!"

She went on after a pause, "You need to reflect on yourself, Elliot. Why are you always so pushy? Why can't you simply coexist with Kayden?"

With that, she hopped into the only car waiting by the street with Kayden.

She was gone.

She had just left her boyfriend—the man who had just paid off her 50-thousand-dollar debt—alone in a run-down neighborhood that was crawling with thugs.

As if on cue, rain began to fall.

The icy water soaked through my clothes and left me freezing. Shivering, I pulled out my phone to call my driver, but the screen flickered once before going completely black.

In the alley behind me, I heard a man let out a drunken laugh.

"Hey, kid! Out here all by yourself? Did your girlfriend dump you? Why don't you lend me a little cash? If you don't, we'll have no choice but to loosen you up a little."

As the man's voice fell, heavy footsteps and the scrape of metal against the pavement gradually drew closer.

I didn't dare to look back. I dragged my injured leg through the muddy streets and ran for my life. Trembling, I hid behind a foul-smelling dumpster and clamped a hand over my mouth to keep myself from making a sound.

This was the love I'd fought so hard to protect. This was someone who was supposed to have eyes for me and me alone.

"Do you still want to keep fighting for her?"

I hadn't noticed when he'd appeared, but my future self was now crouching in front of me.

"Listen to me, Elliot. This is only the beginning," he said. "What you're going through now is practically child's play compared to what's waiting for you in the future."

I hugged my knees. My teeth chattered as my tears mixed with the rain running down my face.

"H-How much worse could it possibly get?" I stammered.

The man lifted a gaunt hand and pointed to his stomach.

"Three years from now, you'll drink until your stomach bleeds just to help Sarah close a business deal. Then, Kayden will say that he wants some soup from the west side of the city, and Sarah will force you to go buy it even though you're still recovering in the hospital.

"It'll be snowing heavily that day, and the roads will be slick. You'll get hit by a speeding truck all because you want to shield that bowl of soup with your body. Do you know what Sarah will be doing when that happens?"

He flashed me a bitter smile before continuing, "She'll be watching fireworks with Kayden."

"You'll lie there alone in the snow, slowly freezing to death as you bleed out. Your phone will be filled with unanswered calls to her, and while you're dying, she'll post this on social media. 'One smile from Kayden is worth more than anything else in the whole world.'

"The whole time, you'll be clutching that bowl of soup in your dying hands. You'll be terrified of spilling a single drop for fear that she'd be angry with you."

I suddenly covered my mouth and started retching violently.

My future self leaned in closer. "That was a human life, Elliot. It's your life. Are you really going to let someone like her get us both killed?"

I lifted my head and wiped the cold rain from my face.

"I'm done gambling on her," I said hoarsely. "I give up."

Sarah slapped Kayden hard across the face, splitting his lip and causing him to bleed from the corner of his mouth."Shut up! Get out! Just get out!" Sarah roared hysterically. "You're still trying to win it all back? Your whole family is insane!"Then, the two of them started wrestling in the middle of the banquet hall. It was extremely unpleasant to watch. With a wave of my hand, I signaled for security to remove them from the premises. The moment the door closed behind them, I heard Sarah screaming desperately."I regret everything, Elliot! I truly do!"Floating beside me, Eli said softly, "It's over."He was right—everything was over. That ridiculous chapter of my youth had finally ended. That night, I had a long, long dream. In my dream, Eli and I were at an amusement park. It was the place I'd wanted to visit the most when I was a kid. According to Eli, Sarah had promised to bring me here. However, she broke her promise so she could accompany Kayden to the hospital.Eli

"I didn't do it on purpose. How was I supposed to know that there'd be traffic?" Next to her, Kayden protested softly.Sarah suddenly looked up and shoved Kayden hard. "Get out! Just get out!" she screamed. "You're a jinx, Kayden Smith! You ruined my life!"She had finally realized the truth. But unfortunately for her, it was far too late. She had already destroyed her future.…On the day our results were released, my entire family was gathered around the computer. Dad's hands were trembling, and he seemed more nervous than he'd been when he proposed to my mother."It's okay if you didn't do well in your exams, Elliot. I will take care of you for the rest of your life. No—your mom and I will take care of you for the rest of your life."I took a deep breath and refreshed the webpage. "Your ranking is within the top 50 in the state. Detailed results will be available on the 27th.""You did it, son!" Dad screamed in joy. He was so excited that he nearly knocked the compute

"Do you think everyone else will foot the bill for your family's greed as long as you act pitiful enough?" I sneered.Sarah stiffened. When she noticed that Kayden was avoiding her gaze, she already knew the truth. She simply refused to accept it.If she did, then everything she'd ever done for him would become a joke—including the 50 thousand dollars she had borrowed from me."Shut up, Elliot! I won't let you slander Kayden!" she shouted, her voice trembling. "He's such a kind person. How could he have lied to me? You're just bitter because you can't stand that I'm helping him!"With a look of disdain, Eli waved his hand dismissively. "Ugh. You can't talk sense into someone who's in denial."I shook my head and signaled for my driver to drive off. "If you don't have the money, call the police. You could also ask your precious Kayden to keep the debt collectors company. Coming to me won't do you any good."With that, I rolled up the window and didn't spare her another glance. In

"Why?" I asked."In a few months, the government will announce plans to build a high-speed rail station and a huge tech park. Property prices will shoot up tenfold," Eli replied. My family had amassed our fortune in real estate, and lately, Mom had been concerned that there were no good new projects around.Come to think of it, my tendency to lose all rationality when I was in love was probably something I inherited from my dad, Elijah Sutton. He spoiled Mom rotten, and he only loved me because I was her son. Sometimes, I even felt like he saw me as a third wheel who'd compete with him for her attention. At dinner that evening, Dad was eagerly peeling shrimp for Mom when I casually mentioned, "Dad, I think that piece of land on the west side of the city looks pretty good. The scenery's nice. Mom likes gardening, right? There's plenty of space out there. It'll be perfect for her."The moment Dad heard that, his eyes lit up. Turning to my mom, Mary Ziegler, he asked, "What do you

Sarah was pouring water for Kayden from an insulated bottle. The moment he saw me walk in, Kayden hurriedly took off the windbreaker. "Please don't get the wrong idea, Elliot. Sarah lent it to me because I was cold."Sarah pushed his hand down and frowned at me. "Why are you taking it off? You're prone to falling ill. Keep it on," she told him. Then, she turned to me. "Welcome back. Are you feeling better? Kayden hasn't even had breakfast because he wanted to wait for you. This jacket was a birthday gift you gave me, and I just lent it to him. You don't mind, right?"I walked to my desk, set my bag down, and pulled out a stack of practice exams. Not bothering to look up, I replied, "Not at all. It's just an old jacket someone else has already worn. Only a junk collector would be interested in it."Sarah shot to her feet and slammed her hand on top of the desk. "Elliot! What the hell is wrong with you?" she snapped. "You have never spoken to me this way before! When did you bec

  • Future Me Saves My Life   Chapter 6

By the time my driver found me, I was curled up behind a dumpster with a high fever and barely conscious. The fever kept me unconscious for three whole days. While I was unconscious, my dreams were filled with images of blood and the wrecked body of my future self lying in the snow. When I finally woke up, the man who had been hovering around me was floating by the window, staring at the rain. The moment he noticed that I had regained consciousness, he drifted over to me."Are you awake?"I stared at the ceiling, feeling numb."Yeah. I am."I'd regained consciousness, and my mind had cleared up too.I'd mentally buried the foolish, naive, lovesick version of myself, and the price I had to pay was 50 thousand dollars."Since you didn't die, it's time to live differently." He pointed at the ginormous pile of practice tests piled on my desk. "You've got one month left until the college entrance exam. If you don't want to repeat the same mistakes, get out of bed and study."I for
